  1. Prayers and :grouphug:. So much for you to take in so suddenly. While I don't know you personally, I sense a very strong woman in your post, one who can gather up the strength to accept these changes and move on to a new life. My prayers for strength are with you.:grouphug:
  2. The Thinkwell Biology CDs prepared my ds well for AP bio. Lots of them and it would take time to work through it all but they are excellent! SO sorry for the stress this is placing on you all.
  3. :iagree: IT was a hard book to get through.
  4. Agree with PP about both the company's encrypted email and faxing, even efaxing. In today's world I bet the company is aware of the security issues! Just call to confirm.
  5. Hey, just wear the fuzzy slippers to the gallery and you won't have any trouble making conversation:lol: As many have said, ask questions and listen. It sounds like you already have some pretty good skills though! Do they serve wine?? That would help!
  6. Having lived through this, I will only say part of it IS the phrasing of the question which does need clarification (have them repeat and rephrase the question if you/they are unclear) and the 'other' part is that , imho, boys at this age are simply finding that they can 'test' you, push your buttons etc. and maybe even unconsciously enjoy this! Try to find the humor in it between you and rest assured they do get over it! Good Luck.
  7. Our ds took a gap year. He took ACT/SAT, applied to colleges etc. as if he were going to attend the next year. When he received his acceptances and selected a school he wrote and requested a deferral. In his case, he presented a brief proposal stating what he was going to do during the gap year. He had no issues getting the deferral and all of the scholarships he was offered were carried over to the next year as well. I am sure there will be posts of other examples that differ but this is what worked for him. How exciting for your ds. Good Luck!
  8. I could eat these all day! MORNING GLORY MUFFINS These muffins originate from a Nantucket restaurant and were first published in Gourmet magazine in 1981, and republished in their October 1991 issue under the title of “25 favorite cookies, muffins and quick breadsâ€. They are a bit of work with all the ingredients, but are worth the effort. And pretty healthy ?! Ingredients: 2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup raisins 1-1/4 cups sugar 1/2 cup chopped pecans 2 tsp baking soda 1/2 cup sweetened coconut 2 tsp cinnamon 1 tart apple, peeled and grated ½ tsp salt 3 large eggs 2 cups coarsely grated carrot 1 cup vegetable oil 1 tsp vanilla Directions: Into a large bowl sift together the flour, the sugar, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. Stir in the carrots, raisins, pecans, coconut, and apples. In a bowl whisk together the eggs, oil, vanilla, and add the mixture to the flour mixture, stirring the batter until it is just combined. Spoon the batter into well-butter 1/3 cup muffin tins (will take 2), filling them to the top, and bake the muffins in the middle of a preheated 350 degree oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until they are springy to the touch. Let the muffins cool in the tins for 5 minutes and then turn them out onto a rack. Makes about 15 muffins.
  9. Foul, just foul. Praying that there is some break for Wolf in all of this.:grouphug: A dear friend of mine went through something similar when she patted a guy on the shoulder and he filed charges for sexual harassment. They were in a state government position - she a director and he a janitor. Horrible what the legal world has brought upon us. This all seems so wrong.
  10. :grouphug: From my experience, sometimes someone is pulling strings to have things done the way they want them done and if a person assigned to getting those things done does it differently from the string puller(!), then there is a shuffling of the deck. IT happens a lot more than it needs to because some folks may control too much or have a different management/leadership style. As hard as it may be, don't internalize this or blame yourself. Let it roll off. Offer a polite exit letter and be done with them. No need to do a face to face in my opinion. I wouldn't be surprised if your replacement eventually goes through the same thing. Don't let this keep you from trying again though.
  11. Kind...A friend brought this article to my attention today that speaks to this directly.
  12. You must make it with roasted beets not that horrid red food coloring! Here's a recipe. I love, love everything about red velvet cake!
  13. Well, ds got two full ride offers based upon SAT test scores and grades and he was homeschooled from first grade thru high school. I'd check with the schools/colleges that are of interest to see the specific details for awarding those scholarships. It does vary. Test scores and grades seem to be the biggies for state schools.
  14. I'd agree with the chart from our experience! Thanks for posting.
  15. I do it to France so sure. USPS says an ounce to Canada or Mexico is $.85.
  16. :grouphug: Bummed for you. Here's hoping for something better to come in their place...and soon.
  17. You don't pay taxes on T-bills so I would think the same would apply to EE Bonds but am not sure. I'm with your son on taking the 4% interest since seeing that again won't happen any time soon.....
  18. I am so, so sorry. You must be in shock still since it was all so sudden. SOmething similar happened to my Mom and she went very quickly too. That was almost nine years ago now and I am still perplexed by the suddenness . My heart goes out to you and prayers for you, your family and your mother. :grouphug:
  19. Terrific! Hope it works for you.
  20. http://www.rcowen.com/juniorwriter.htm Has anyone heard of this or tried it? I am 'retired' from homeschooling now that my ds is in college but this is a site by a former colleague and I thought it might be of interest to anyone with kids age 5-8. Free, as far as I know.
  21. I used to think this as well until I lived in Chicago for seven years! Equally good pizza there and maybe even better, dare I say:D
  22. I find them disgusting (all that mold...) but dh LOVES, absolutely oves them. Last spring he scarfed down five pounds of the blasted things. Definitely a regional item!
