Moxie
The lady selling make-up on QVC keeps saying, "this isn't going anywhere; it is literally bullet proof". Really?? Make-up that can stop bullets? Has someone called the military because I bet they'd pay more then $19.95.
ChristusG
LOL! Yes, that would drive me nuts to hear her say that. Maybe you'd better phone the military....or the police force....or some other person who gets shot at often LOL.

plansrme
Couldn't agree more. I was just telling someone that my pet peeve is people who use "literally" to mean just the opposite, as in, "He was literally laughing his head off." Ewwwww! _io
Argh! This one drives me nuts. I hear so many people use it incorrectly, that I have started to wonder if I'm wrong, and it is an accepted idiom and I'm just taking things too "literally." Jean in Newcastle
Maybe we should coin a new term - "Illiterally":D
nono
Oh my goodness. What did they do at the end of the segment? I'm picturing a Looney Tunes style ending where they pull a gun, and after she's shot, she shakes off the gun powder with her face still looking all pretty and perfect. Am I close?? :D

unsinkable
I literally want to join in and laugh my @$$ off because this is so funny but I know this board. Any minute now someone is going to jump in here to defend QVC and say we're being mean. ;)
Jen in PA
The other day DS was playing with a bunch of stuffed animals that he and his sister were pretending they were rescuing. He picked one up and said "You are so cute I could eat you up!" And then he quickly reassured it "Not literally, I would never hurt you!" So I guess we could have him contact QVC with the definition:D

lollie010
You ladies are funny this morning. I had a professor in college who refused to give one student a recommendation for medical school because he misused "literally" in a speech. Oh and he also said "irregardless." I think the combo of the two made the professor literally "blow a fuse."
MelanieM
Ha! That would be one of those things that gets me talking at the tv. My daughter's favourite word these days is literally. We're working on making sure she's using it properly.

RegularMom
I agree and share in your agony. (but not literally). :) You might like to peruse this blog: http://literally.barelyfitz.com/ where they are literally tracking all abuses of the word literally. It always makes me feel better to pop in there every once in a while. :)

I think the combo of the two made the professor literally "blow a fuse." I literally said irregardless once. I had picked it up as a habit from someone, and I literally said it in my great books class. The professor literally said, "What are you, some sort of nincompoop?" I have literally never said it again. :tongue_smilie: I was just talking to a friend out her son (my student) correcting another boy for saying, "I could care less." Ginevra
"I could care less." Love that boy Oh! That one sends me into orbit! Literally! :D I just raked dh over the coals about that recently. I think I had PMS. He looked thoughtful a moment and said, "Yeah. I guess you're right. It doesn't make sense." Peela
I find it culturally fascinating that this is also an Australian phenomenon. My son uses in wrongly literally all the time  (thats the sort of thing he says)
