  1. She may need to practice reading, but there's no reason it can't be from books and magazines that she actually enjoys. If she's an auditory learner, I have no problem with her listening to the audiobook of the "required reading." FWIW, we just watched the movie for To Kill a Mockingbird, because we're too busy to be reading it but I wanted exposure. (although I am aware that it differs a bit from the book)
  2. My dd made all A's in homeschool high school. Back in the day, I made all A's in public school high school. I KNOW she got a better education than I did. So, no, I have no qualms about her grades.
  3. Well, that's interesting. If the thought of going to that school depresses her, then maybe you should "decide" to go to the other school and see how that feels. I will be an outlier and say that I don't think it matters that much which university you go to, and surely the professors are not so mediocre. Maybe they are shy and not in the mood to chat with prospective students (or however you made your determination about them). If she really loves the private LAC, then go there.
  4. Academy carries Dickies Cargo Shorts for women. https://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/dickies-womens-11-in-cotton-cargo-short#repChildCatSku=114494521
  5. I'm in south Texas, and I find that 100% cotton, woven fabric is best. Knit gets hot. Nylon gets hot. I wear the "sunwashed canvas" cropped pants from LL Bean. They also have a shorts version. https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/53604?page=original-sunwashed-canvas-pants-cropped&bc=12-27-622&feat=622-GN1&csp=f https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/31068?page=sunwashed-canvas-shorts%26csp=a%26feat=53604-item_page.recsmiddle
  6. Go with your Mama Gut. I can tell you that I bought Plaid and never used it. WWE we were about two years behind, and we NEVER did dictation in it. Rod and Staff English like to killed my dd. She literally said it was invented to torture children (and we did it orally, too, by the way). I have not used the other programs. Just remember they are still so little at that age. They don't need to do a ton of writing.
  7. I would do it as a volunteer only. That way, I can truly put limits on my time. You could still include it on a resume.
  8. Earth Balance for butter. Ener-G Egg Replacer or Bob's Red Mill Egg Replacer for baked goods. Most pizza places you can order no cheese, and their crusts are often safe. The internet has all their ingredients. Best of luck!
  9. Really Big Construction Projects like airports
  10. My dd had this problem as a child. It turned out she had flat feet. She now wears running shoes from Fleet Feet (they will watch your gait and fit them for you) or Crocs or we put Superfeet (also from Fleet Feet where they fit them to the shoes you want to wear) in all other shoes. Good shoes. Oh, yeah, and she is never barefoot, even in the house, except for showers.
  11. It will be in the thousands. It's been awhile and our house is smaller (1400 sq. ft) plus we're in Texas. But I want to say 4-6K? And I don't remember if that was both inside and outside units or just one.
  12. Saxon is spiral. Mathusee is mastery. I don't know which other high school maths are mastery because we use Mathusee. hth
  13. BJU US History is super sexist. We're using it because it's more interesting than Abeka, but it is soooo sexist. Examples: In the twenties, divorce rates went up. Why? Women. After World War II, divorce rates went up. Why? Women. And yesterday we read about the evils of rock and roll. We just laugh, but I'm not sure how a classroom teacher would handle this stuff.
  14. Critical Thinking Company has Language Smarts workbooks that are quite good. Totally secular.
  15. We liked Jensen's Format Writing. Writing with Skill just didn't work for my big picture thinker. For research reports, I found that Seton's Composition for High School did a good job. Both were pretty gentle and very straight-forward.
  16. Teaching Textbooks goes through PreCal. Have him take the placement test to see if it's a possibility, or if he is too advanced. Mathusee might work for him, too, but I find at the upper levels, you need someone to be able to help/answer questions because Mr. Demme's teaching gets a little... vague at times. Mathusee goes through Calculus.
  17. Okay, I tell this to everyone, but I don't know that it is available to everyone. We live in Texas, and there is in our city a Deaf and Hard of Hearing Center. We went there to ask them about tips to help my dh in meetings at work. Ended up getting free hearing aids and hearing-aid-friendly-phone voucher, from the state's Department of Assistive Services. Good hearing aids. Better than VA ones, certainly. I think it's because it has to do with work, but I'm not positive that's the only reason. So I would say explore your tax dollars at work and see if you have something like this.
  18. You know what I would do? I would just get the LA/English "kit" from Abeka or BJU or Timberdoodle and have her start it. And she gets where she gets by the last day of school in May. Plus set up a book basket with some good novels, and require 30 minutes of reading a day.
  19. Did not use the Spanish. Was very happy with the French for the Galore Park for both French 1 and French 2. Did require me (the teacher) to be familiar with French (I am-- 3 years in high school and 3 semesters in college). Although my dd hated French. But that's not the book's fault.
  20. At that age, we had non-negotiable showers every night at 7:30. They became non-negotiable because my dd would try to wheedle her way out of them. So it was became a must-do no matter what. And I still had to remind EVERY night at 7:30, but at least the resistance stopped.
  21. If she likes proofs, a Discrete Math or an Analysis course might suit her. Hmm. She can't take Analysis without Multivariable Calc though, I wouldn't think.
  22. I would pull her out now. It's first grade. She's not going to miss anything academically that you can't make up for. Another six weeks of misery sounds awful.
