  1. Different schools have talent searches. Johns Hopkins has CTY Duke has TIP northwestern has NUMATS Students can take out of level tests to see how they do and for the challenge. The Explore is an 8th grade test. Taken searches use it at different ages...duke does in 5 th grade. Older students, starting in 6 th or 7 th grade would take the ACT or SAT through the talent search programs. High scores on the tests qualify students for some online classes. My son is participating in all 3 searches. He did CTY in 2nd grade with their SCAT, Northwestern last year with the explore and he's taking the explore again this year through duke.
  2. Sounds wonderful. It accepts your child's responsibility and doesn't give any excuses. You take it seriously. If I got that email, I'd be okay with you guys or would feel okay talking things out with you if I had further concerns.
  3. On some word problems. I want him FAST with basic arithmetic. He took the explore last year. I had him practice with the calculator some first so he was familiar with it. He uses it with the challenging CWP and I did have him practice with it some by using it to check his work on occasion.
  4. I got my son the TI-30XIIS. Don't do a graphing calc yet.
  5. Or they see that you chose your career over them. Choose what you want to do, but there may be repercussions you're not thinking of. I saw my folks go though masters degrees, so only 4 years and then working demanding jobs. I give them credit...my mom in particular...but my sister and I came in third regularly over my parents marriage (as it should be) and their work. I don't have much of a relationship with them due to some of their career choices.
  6. :grouphug: No advice. Just commiseration. I'm on strike for a while here. Had started considering a virtual school but my husband has taken over. He's got the responsibility for teaching. I just run us all over town during the day :) It's a completely different dynamic and the change is good. I figure we'll come out of this in a better place, but it is a tricky transition. One of the changes has been limited (severely) video gaming (and screen time). It's my son's birthday today (10...need to change sig) and he and my husband are playing MineCraft together as part of the birthday present (a number of marbles meaning electronic time that must be redeemed by Sunday). My son was thrilled to get the marbles since it's video game time! Wish there were a better way to motivate him... Hope things get better for you!
  7. They're close. Beginning algebra does many of the algebra I topics and int alg is close to alg ii. The course description in the catalog compared with course descriptions of alg I and ii should give you a better idea.
  8. Our cc has a Middle College. From what I have seen of it (not too much) it is definitely high school and more for students who were about gone. I wouldn't have my son do courses with them at ALL. I'd far rather him take regular cc classes. YMMV.
  9. Check with his doctor. My son gets mean when he takes albuterol but he's fine on Xopanex. My husband constantly got thrush on Advair but is fine with singulair and serevent. So different steroids do have different side effects. It'd be worth trying something else. Good luck!
  10. This is really going to depend on where you live, your skin type, and prior sun damage. I had a number of blistering sunburns before puberty (my first one was recorded in my baby book... father stationed in Hawaii). By middle school and high school, I'd get sunburned in gym class if we were outdoors. If I'm out in the sun without sunscreen, I get a rash on my arms. My dermatologist says the benefits of sunscreen outweigh any risks for me. I've had a number of dysplastic moles removed and go in to be looked over every 6 months. I try to put sunscreen on my son if he's out during the summer from 10-4. He has my husband's skin and does seem to tan rather than burn. And as an FYI for everyone... get to know the ABCDs of mole changes and do a self check regularly. Watch for moles especially on palms and soles of feet. A friend lost his wife due to a melanoma from a mole on the sole of her foot. (I'm doing a family medical history today so cancer is on my mind... and Alzheimers and heart disease... what fun :glare:)
  11. I thought for 8th CTY has moved to SAT or ACT. SCAT would be for under 6th. I don't know at it would matter which was taken. I likely will have my son do one in 7th and the other in 8th to have practice with both before high school. It'll depend on the college which test should be taken.
  12. Our old neighbors had the police give my husband a restraining order because he went over to ask them to take their dog in since it had been barking for a couple hours in the evening (after 10pm when he went over). I was so glad when they left!
  13. :iagree: However, anything that looks strange should be checked out by a dermatologist. I had a ton of sunburns early on (first one before age 1) and I now see mine 2x a year. Anything slightly off, we carve out. It's good that you've got an appointment and it's probably nothing, but it's definitely for the best that you're going in.
  14. I'm currently taking a break and he's taken over the teaching. :D Wholly supportive!
  15. :iagree: Mult and div are equivalent operations and whichever come first is done first.
  16. When I did my student teaching, school policy was that students couldn't get a grade lower than a 50. I've seen that as district policy now in some districts here. :glare: I've also seen students who have just graduated from high school (need three math credits...lowest is algebra 1) test into our cc prealgebra classes.
