  1. What are they going to do to address the serious risk of sexual assault for women in the military? Knowing the risk and voluntarily enlisting is one thing...
  2. Or victim blaming anyone. People who have been raped, for another example. :(
  3. It's a fresh water lake. I have seen the signs hundreds of times, but somehow "alligators" didn't pop up as reasons why not to go in the water. Brain eating amoeba, bacteria, lake junk, duck lice and poop, boats (the lake is used for transportation between parking areas and resorts with ferries and smaller boats), and a general avoidance of liability for people swimming, yes.
  4. Of course there have been successful attempts. I phrased it poorly in my dismay at reading the horrible comments. The father tried to fight the alligator. He's not a bad parent because someone, somewhere, was successful fighting off another alligator. Alligator wrestling isn't a good/bad parent skill. He didn't feed the child to the alligator in an attempt to save himself or for entertainment.
  5. There are awful comments about the parents. Having a kid out at 9:30 isn't crazy, and the beach doesn't seem real there. No one goes in the water, but you stand there for fireworks. I would never have thought twice about alligators. How would someone be able to fight off an alligator? (Critical commenters). But how are there no eyewitnesses? There has to be security footage.
  6. After the big media brouhaha a few years ago (2012?), yes, they have changed their corporate giving practices. We aren't talking about something from 50 or 60 years ago. The groups still exist. The atmosphere is still pervasive, possibly moreso after Obergefell last year. The Swanson speech quote is from November 2015. I was answering your question about what atmosphere and pointing out the dangerous beliefs are not limited to fringe groups like Westboro.
  7. Is she tracking her intake? My Fitness Pal is free, and it can help her see whether she needs to eat more. Whole30 isn't concerned with calories, but when I had to do an elimination diet with my youngest (after which Whole 30 looked expansive, ha), it was hard forcing myself to eat enough. Sweet potato "fries" baked with a ton of coconut oil, whipped coconut cream, avocados, and salad dressings heavy on the olive oil really helped. Also, if she cut caffeine suddenly (because coffee with coconut milk tastes like crap), that will exacerbate the awful feeling.
  8. I agree with Fraidycat that you seem to be misunderstanding Whole30 and allergy causation. Re: smoothies, here's a quote from their website: Smoothies We’ve covered this ground before, but it bears repeating. There is no official Whole30 ban on smoothies. This is just a recommendation, based on the science and our experience. We outline all of this in It Starts With Food, but we’re happy to go over it again real quick. First, we would much rather see you eat a meal you have to chew instead of drinking your calories, because satiety. Smoothies are usually super heavy on the fruit, which means you’re ingesting way more sugar than you would if you just ate the fruit in its whole form. Also, smoothies don’t usually contain protein, so you’re missing out on both satiety and complete protein, which is really hard to make up in just your two other meals. Plus drinking a huge whackload of fruit first thing in the morning can set you up for more volatile energy, hunger, and cravings throughout your day. But no, we’re not going to kick you out of the Whole30 for having a smoothie. Just maybe have some eggs with it, okay? http://whole30.com/2015/01/rules-recommendations/
  9. They donated heavily to Focus on the Family, recognized by the SPLC as a hate group. FOF, Eagle Forum, and Exodus International are groups who actively work to pass legislation harmful to gay people or promote dangerous gay conversion therapy. In Uganda, there was legislation involving the death penalty for homosexuality aided by FOF (as one example). This is more than not believing gay marriage is appropriate for you and your religion. The major players in all of these groups have ties to each other and major political figures. The other thread discussed how Senator Cruz, Gov Jindal, Gov Huckabee, Ben Carson, etc attended a conference with Kevin Swanson, who literally preaches about killing gays. Here's a quote from his conference: "Yes, Leviticus 20:13 calls for the death penalty for homosexuals. Yes, Romans chapter 1 verse 32 the Apostle Paul does say that homosexuals are worthy of death. His words not mine! And I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ! And I am not ashamed of the truth of the word of God. And I am willing to go to jail for standing on the truth of the word of God.†When there are US government officials publicly supporting the guy known as the "Kill the Gays Preacher," it produces a "culture of atmosphere that condones attack." This isn't fringe, Westboro whackos only stuff, and it is frightening. Check out Dominionism and Seven Mountains. I'm guessing Catholicism is considered a cult to them.
  10. Yes, it's the "crucial pickle!" I have great memories of Chick-fil-a. My grandmother lived near the original Dwarf house, and it was the only restaurant she would go to other than Piccadilly. :)
  11. Miami? Donating upwards of $2 million in company profits to groups that support gay conversion therapy and other damaging practices goes beyond an individual having an opinion. They have changed their corporate donation practices after the news broke several years ago, so that is positive. :)
  12. We put Elfa in all of ours during one of the big sales. Love it. California Closets is lovely but was much more expensive. I couldn't justify the cost difference for the utility for us. I'm in the closet less than a minute a day.
  13. Pancakes at Pamela's P&G Diner We stayed at the Downtown Doubletree by Hilton. It was shabby and in desperate need of a renovation last summer, but the desk staff were nice. It's a great location for getting to the Pirates stadium. Right across the street is the little train and bam. My kids loved the science museum and Heinz museum. Take an incline!
  14. Yes. In some states, it can be prior to that point. Or at least practically speaking if not legally.
  15. Agree with adding sweet potatoes, etc. and making sure she's getting good fats. Lots of water and salt too. If she ate lots of simple carbs before, there is a pretty common "low carb flu" feeling. I feel like dirt before my first postpartum cycle. Pregnancy possible?
  16. Ice maker in the fridge and trays. The ice maker can't keep up. When the money tree blooms, I want one of those fancy ice makers that makes rabbit pellet ice.
  17. The child's mom might acquiesce to his demands on this because it makes her life easier. She can't fight EVERY battle. Send the gifts to his mother. Or ask the child's mom what she would prefer. Don't be hurt if she agrees sending them to his mother would work better. It's tiresome dealing with crazy.

    I'm so sorry. :grouphug:
  19. Doctor time. Neurosurgeon or orthopaedic who specializes in lower backs.
  20. I kill all plants, so no recommendation on growing things. We like the Campari tomatoes available at Costco during off season. They taste like tomatoes.
  21. Divide by room. The kidless people can bunk up with others to save money if they want.
