  1. I am totally impressed. I am a novice knitter that just worked myself up to a baby blanket on size 35 needles. Read knit row 1, knit row 2, knit row 3....LOL....you get the point. There is NO way I could try socks yet. Congratulations on a job well done.
  2. I have not read all of the responses, but the things that stick out in my mind are without the parent's consent and given to children of illegal age If it is illegal for a child to have s*x at x age then why are adults allowing it. I've heard the arguement that they will anyway. Then just hand out beer, drugs, inappropiate clothing, etc. They will do that anyway, too.:glare: If an adult gives my child something against my consent and without informing me, especially if that thing allows/encourages/insert-your-own-word something illegal than I would be FURIOUS!!!
  3. I make mine from pork loin. It is a little dry, so you need to cook it with a little olive oil. Very lean. I use this recipe....http://inashoe.com/2010/01/homemade-sausage-seasoning/
  4. My MIL and Mom recently started emailing each other. It is totally creeping me out.
  5. Thank you for your responses. I'll look more in depth on the government issue. I hadn't actually thought through the state vs federal aspect of it. Thank you for reminding me about the arts. We will get that figured out too. All of our older dc are already doing Greek and Latin. Though, if it becomes too much we will let one go or go at a slower pace. I am feeling much more confident in purchasing some of the history/literature books to preread. I probably will do more fine tuning before 9th, but at least I am feeling like I am on the right track. Melanie-your schedule looks great. Thank you for sharing.
  6. Ewww...I'll offer the opposite. I vote for wiping. That's what I'm teaching our nephews (whom I am raising). Wouldn't the shaking thing develop into other shaking things?
  7. Apologia does a good job of explaining good science vs good scientists. I think with a foundation like that Christians are better prepared to study all science and still keep their core belief.
  8. Wouldn't WTM history cover lit, history, and writing? What do you think? I talked to Dh last night about dropping Rod and Staff and his advice was to purchase the book and use it as a reference. We are thinking that writing will be covered, but having the books would allow me to add in assignments if need be. I was hoping that after doing TeenPact for every year of high school that I could record a full government credit during the junior or senior high year. Can you do that? As far as the extracurricular I've never thought one way or the other of credits. They are things that my dd enjoys and gives her a nice break from book work. If we can give credit then I guess that's icing on the cake. I will definitely do some in the summer. During TeenPact/Lads to Leaders time that is basically all we do for the month or so leading up to them. That and math. Horse training is on Saturday, so I guess it really doesn't count. It does fulfill that ever popular P.E. requirement, though.
  9. Yes, for this child spelling is still needed. She is not a natural speller, but did jump 2 levels in spelling last year. I wondered about Rod and Staff. Is it still needed if we are doing WTM writing recommendations for History? I am leaning toward yes, but not set on it.
  10. My oldest is going into 8th. I am working toward her 9th grade schedule so I can purchase books and preread. How's this look? English- Rod and Staff 9 & 10 book 1 Spelling- Spelling Power Latin- Henle 1 Greek- Homeschool Greek Bible- Lads to Leaders/Church and Home studies History- Ala WTM 2004 Government- TeenPact Math- Saxon Algebra II Science- Apologia Biology Logic- Introductory Logic/Intermediate Logic (undecided, but leaning toward) PE- Horse Training on the Weekends Music- Piano/Voice/Listening to Classical Art- Various Art Projects/Museum pass Other- Clep Prep with a Clep or two if ready Homemaking, Gardening, etc. Learning to self schedule some Wow! This looks like a lot on paper. Some things like horse training and gardening are a part of our life so aren't technically school. Others like TeenPact and Lads to Leaders are certain times of the year and we slow way down on subjects during those times. Is this too much? Not enough? How do I fit it all in????
  11. I have 8. My olders generally don't teach the youngers, because they have more work themselves. We do a modified workbox system that is very doable. My older 3 (8, 10, 13) do subjects that they can do on their own while I work with the 4, 6, and 6 1/2 year olds. During this time the 1 and 2yo rotate between their workboxes at the table or on blankets. After that the younger 5 are ready to play, so I have them choose an activity or I choose for them. This frees me to work with the olders. At lunch everyone except me eats outside. This gives me much needed quiet. No one can come in until they are ready for nap time.:D This always buys me an hour. After lunch everyone rests then I work with the older 4 while the younger 4 nap. It looks like organized chaos on paper, but is actually pretty doable, and I get a nap every day. I am much happier this way!
  12. I believe you. I am not into "weird" medicine either, but I have a friend that I am convinced got sick from nutrasweet. She was a BIG Weight Watchers person and would save her points for sweet things. She also said Diet Coke was a "free" food. Ugh! Now she has fibromyalga. (spelling?) I am positive it was the Diet Cokes that made her sick!
  13. Yep, I have. I homeschooled a girl for a year, but chose to stop at the end of the school year. Her parents didn't really take it seriously and would choose to keep her home about 1-2 days a week out of a 4 day week, and they never would do any of the work or projects that they missed. My dd and her dd were on the same level and I decided part way through the year not to hold up my own dd. Since they literally missed 1/3 or more I refused to take responsibility for her dd if she fell behind. The parents really wanted me to continue for the next year, but I did not. I also homeschooled another girl for a while, but due to a divorce situation she moved to another town. I have had several more requests, but I prefer hs my own only. In my state you fall under childcare regulations if you have someone's child more than a certain # of hours a week, so I couldn't do more than 5 half days or 4 longer days and that doesn't work with most families' schedules. You also have to factor in what you charge, meals, curriculum costs, field trips, and late pick up policy. I would absolutely have a contract even with close friends or family members. When you do business with family (or friends) do business! Right now I hs my nieces and nephews, but they live with me and I have temp. custody, so I guess that really doesn't count. If you need any more info feel free to PM me.
  14. I haven't read the other responses. I hs my 4 kiddos AND I am raising my sister's 4 dc because she and her boyfriend went to jail. They wouldn't let me out. All of the children were under 1 to 12 at the time. When I showed up at the courthouse to try to get out, on a day set aside just for that reason, the judge asked me what I planned to do with my 4 and wondered why I couldn't just get childcare for all 8. :001_huh: The only people who got out were really really pregnant and the ones that were, um, a leetle bit crazy, kwim? I did get it postponed for a month to get childcare. :glare:
  15. I almost didn't type it in because of the title. Oh! My! It does make my days seem not so stressful. The worst I've dealt with other than projectile poop and vomit is 1 bottle of syrup and 1 1yo girl. Luckily on tile.
  16. I'll be the oddball and vote for #4. Sounds yummy. One thing that would be helpful is to take two things. You could take a meal and muffins for the morning. Or take a meal and sandwich stuff. Honestly, most new mommys need more help after a new baby when hubby isn't home than when he is. Muffins or sandwich stuff would make the whole day so much easier!
  17. I'm not even going to tell you what I thought the title of this thread was until I took a second look.:D
  18. On another board I frequent someone does this. She plans a weeks worth of meals in the summer that can easily be taken on picnic on a whim. In the winter another she does another set. I am not sure if she does it quarterly or only twice a year, but she says it make for a simpler day for her. It does sound tempting!
  19. I agree about the processed foods thing. You can switch plans whenever you like, but they discourage you from doing it too often. Most plans will work for any store, but the any store plan did seem to be a little fresher. Some of the ingrediants may be hard to find at Aldi's, but I bet you already knew that. We are currently doing the Aldi's plan and some of the ingrediants are hard to find, but not too many. They listed pesto last time. No pesto in the store. We even asked. I wonder if they list specialty items occasionally.
