  1. Good question! I guess I just had MY list of reading Plato, Aristotle, and other classics, which admittedly I've never read myself. I just wanted the Hive Mind's opinion of college prep.:D
  2. Rhondabee I also have an education without having been well read in many of the subjects I wish I had. I guess my similar dream for my dc is vanishing too. This did help a lot, thank you!
  3. How generous of her! Have you given her a copy of the Bitter Homeschoolers Wishlist? I am sure she'd enjoy it! ;)
  4. LOL, I was just going to post the same thing from the same site. Then I read your post again. No sense in being redundant! This is what I am following, as well. My plan is to do 7/6 then 8/7 then Algebra 1. But I'll be awarding the same credits.
  5. Um...posted on the wrong thread. Off to post correctly. :blushing:
  6. I found this on http://homeschoolwithsaxon.com/newsletterpage-all.php FAST MATH TRACK: Math 76 – Algebra ½ – Algebra 1 – Algebra 2 – Geometry with Advanced Algebra – Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus – Calculus. NOTE: The Saxon Advanced Mathematics textbook was used over a two year period allowing the above underlined two full math credits after completing Saxon algebra 2. (TOTAL High School Math Credits: 5) AVERAGE MATH TRACK: Math 76 – Math 87 – Algebra ½ – Algebra 1 – Algebra 2 – Geometry with Advanced Algebra – Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus. (TOTAL High School Math Credits: 4) SLOWER MATH TRACK: Math 76 – Math 87 – Algebra ½ – Algebra 1 – Introduction to Algebra 2 – Algebra 2 – Geometry with Advanced Algebra. (TOTAL High School Math Credits: 4) NOTE 1: YOU MUST USE THE FOLLOWING EDITIONS AS THEY ARE ACADEMICALLY STRONGER THAN THE EARLIER EDITIONS ARE. USING OLDER EDITIONS WILL RESULT IN FRUSTRATION OR FAILURE FOR THE STUDENT. Math 76: Either the hardback 3rd Ed or the new soft cover 4th Ed. (Math content of both editions is the same) Math 87: Either the hardback 2nd Ed or the new soft cover 3rd Ed. (Math content of both editions is the same) Algebra ½: Use only the 3rd Edition. (Book has the lesson reference numbers added also) Algebra 1: Use only the 3rd Edition. (Book has the lesson reference numbers added also) Algebra 2: Use either the 2nd or 3rd Editions. (Content is identical. Lesson reference numbers added to 3rd Ed) Advanced Mathematics: Use only the 2nd Edition: (Lesson reference numbers are in the solutions manual) Calculus: Either the 1st or 2nd Edition will work. However, if the student needs DVD tutorial assistance, then they will need the 2nd Edition textbook. NOTE 2: WHEN RECORDING COURSE TITLES ON THE TRANSCRIPT, USE THE FOLLOWING TITLES: Math 76: Use “Sixth Grade Math.†Math 87: Use “Pre-Algebra.â€(If student must also take Algebra ½, then use “Seventh Grade Mathâ€) Algebra ½: Use “Pre-Algebra.†Advanced Mathematics: Use “Geometry with Advanced Algebra (1 credit) if they only complete the first 60 – 70 lessons of that textbook. Add “Trigonometry and Pre-calculus†(1 credit) if they successfully complete the entirety of the Advanced mathematics textbook. Under no circumstances should you record “Advanced Mathematics†on the student’s high school transcript as colleges and universities will not know what math this course contains. They will ask you for a syllabus for the course. Calculus: Self explanatory.
  7. Donna A. Thank you! Your post eased many of my concerns. I guess we'll work in extras in the summer or as Daddy's read alouds at night. Or *gasp* realize we really can't do it all. LOL! It's getting harder and harder for me to realize that!
  8. I reallly am leaning toward MFW for high school. I don't know why. I have been dead set on doing a straight WTM history until now. Other than previewing certain books that MFW carries to see if they match with our beliefs, I like the literature they pick. It just doesn't have as much primary source readings as I would like. How long each day does it take? Is it hard to add in extra literature? Anyone BTDT and have advice?
  9. Make pickles. or Send the kids around the neighborhood to sell them for 10-25 cents a piece. They get a little spending money - you get rid of the cucumbers.:D
  10. I haven't read the responses, but yes. I had 2 miscarriages after my first. Then 3 healthy pregnancies and births. Now I am 19 weeks pregnant with my 5th.
  11. Were due with #9 in a few months and my house is 1665 square feet. Maybe less, depending on which person you ask. My only complaints are a tiny yard that slopes so no pool not even a kiddy pool, and not enough bathrooms. Other than that it's pretty doable. People have raised large families in small houses for years and years.
  12. Could it have been an emergency? I probably would've flipped the porch light on them and then and only then and only if I recognized them would I have answered the door. If not I would've just let them think I had my lights on sensor or timer. After 9 is certainly pushing it. I want to know what is in that box.:D
  13. Big rubbermaid bin. I'll have to admit that box4blox looks pretty cool!
  14. Yes! I printed this and leave it on my current pile.:D http://www.onsimplicity.net/2008/05/your-clutter-hates-you/
  15. :grouphug: I am in the exact same situation as you. I have 8 dc with one on the way. My oldest is 13 and the youngest is 1. I am also in my thirties. It's a little overwhelming, but I know God will give us the grace we need when we need it. I could not have done 8 when I had my first. I only had one, so I didn't need to do eight. KWIM? Now that I have 8 I can do 8. School days are challenging, at times, but I do what I can and trust that God will make up the rest. I understand the feelings you were describing. We just spent 2 days cleaning so someone could come over tonight. 2 days! PM me if you want to chat. I do get on more than I used to, but it may take me a few days to respond.
  16. We've answered questions when they arised. Making sure what they were asking...Sometimes the answer to where do I come from is Toledo, kwim? ;) My girls have always known about childbirth and periods, just not the whole process. So when my oldest was 9 or 10 I gave her the American Girls' book The Care and Keeping of You. It avoids s*x, but describes developement. At 12 we used The Wonderful Way Babies are Made. She got really quiet. I asked her a few questions, and her response was she knew some of it already, but not all. I told her I'd be glad to talk about it. She has never brought it up again. We've got a pretty open relationship so I know she'll come ask if she's interested in more information. She's now 13 and still thinks the whole boy/girl thing is creepy so it may be a while.
  17. Everything but school. :D Really. Give new school supplies. Fun breakfast, go over new subjects, if any, and schedule. Quit for the day. With 8 at home this can take all day. Then when we start a new year we generally start with just a couple of subjects a day and slowly add more until we are doing a full schedule in a couple of weeks.
  18. Possible, I've witnessed it with my own kiddo. Pictures, please!
  19. Now wait a minute. There is no reason to bring curriculum or any type of books, for that matter, up in this discussion.:D
  20. This is Fun Love this one! Best tips for newlyweds...lay it on me. Here's one If you are a Christian who doesn't wear pants....Something I learned about the oil spill;)
