We did ECC this year. I'm not sure the ages of your children but we used the Heroes for Young Readers rather than the Then and Now Heroes and used the books for independent reading rather than a read aloud. And for pure fun, we added GeoPuzzles Another book we used all through the year so I would recommend buying, again if you have younger children, is Children Just Like Me

Who can explain Settlers of Catan to me?
Maeintx replied to Cindy in C-ville's topic in General Education Discussion Board
We have Settlers and the expansion as a family of 6. My 8-yo loves it as much as my 18-yo. We had to watch the videos as well to figure it out. It's a great family game. -
Not for our family but a friend recently had the same experience. She is 9-mo pg and due any time. She was out to eat with her family and was told the check was taken care of. They did inform her it was the elderly lady eating alone who had left but wanted give them a baby gift, They said, "Congratulations and to enjoy the new little bundle."

Homeschooling as a Home Decorating Choice

Thank you for posting this link. Our doctor has this same canvas hanging in his waiting room. My dh has commented several times he would like to know the store it was purchased. -
Being a passenger with a kid learning to drive?
Maeintx replied to T Baer's topic in General Education Discussion Board
To answer the OP. I would say no because I'd worry about the younger sibling/friend distraction factor. My ds recently attended Driver's ed through the school. He had other teens in the car that were signed up for the course with the instructor so it is not illegal when in Driver's Ed. Once he earned his license, then he had driving restrictions and could only have 1 non-sibling in the vehicle with him under the age 21. Just our opinion- but we had him hold his learner's permit for a year and not get his license until he was 17-1/2. -
Has anyone had a child participate? If so, how did you find them? I live outside a fairly large metro area but I'm stumbling to find something that fits. Ds has had no formal medical testing. The school district tested in K and their "team" felt he met the criteria for PDD-NOS. I feel certain now that he is older he is more Asperger's. We are at a point he needs help with social skills.

Tell me how to stay off the computer!
Maeintx replied to A.J. at J.A.'s topic in General Education Discussion Board
Firefox has a browser add on appropriately named Leechblock. You can block out specific sites during specific times. I am going to start using it again myself... tomorrow, of course  -
Am I crazy to consider a leather couch?
Maeintx replied to sparrow's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My boys brought home a kitten last September. Our leather sofa has been destroyed. :glare: I vote no to the leather if you have a cat. -
Soaring with Spelling and Vocabulary?
Maeintx replied to sleepymommy's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We use it for 4th grade. My guy is a natural speller though and it leans a bit easy for him. But... SWS and GWG are his 2 favorite books and given a choice, he'll always pick them first. SWS is fairly independent for him and that is a plus for me. In retrospect, we should have bumped up a year. We are moving quickly though and SWS will be the one subject he finishes. So far, he seems to retain what he has learned, but again, he is a natural speller. -
Popping in w/ a tax question (1099MISC)
Maeintx replied to Aubrey's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I'm an IC but frequently have to remind the company I contract with that I'm an IC. Your dh sounds like an employee. They have to provide 1099's. I can't believe they made him pay for it. Here's a great resource. http://ohioline.osu.edu/cd-fact/1179.html -
So glad you took him in, just watch him. Ds was 5 and had the pain on/off for a couple of days. He'd sleep through it. My then 2yo had just had a positive Strep test so when my older son had stomach pain the doctor treated him for Strep. Two ER visits later, another trip to the pediatrician, a consult with a surgeon and his appendix ruptured. We spent a week in the hospital. It never localized his right lower quadrant but always hurt around his belly button.

I've actually had the concerns that I"ve messed my boy up so it was reassuring for me to read your post . My son is younger 10. But he struggles with having to learn things now. Everything was so easy for him earlier on, reading, math concepts, but now it is work for him and he doesn't like it one bit. He still is a whiz with spelling but multistep math problems are torture for him. We're getting there..slow and steady wins the race.

Dishwasher soap?/Dishwashers?
Maeintx replied to KnitWit's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I was at a mom and pop type grocer the other day and noticed way in the back an old box of the Cascade detergent that has phosphorous. I bout did a cartwheel in the aisle I was so happy. It was ridiculously expensive but I didn't care. Using it has made my glasses clear again. I too know use the more expensive Finish gel tabs and Lemon Shine. I recently read, here I believe, that a package of unsweetened lemonade works the same. -
Both my 8 yo and 10 yo are needing to review their facts again. We're going to do math fact copywork starting next week, in addition to using online drills.

I'll share one of our favorite God provides moments...We were young and married while dh was in college. And flat broke. I worked part-time at the hospital but it covered our expenses and not much more. Tuition was due and we weren't sure how we were going to pay. Dh registered and we were praying. Dh was rearended at a stop light. It did little damage mechanically to our car but it was dented. In our state at the time, you rec'd the check and then decided to fix your car or not. The check we rec'd was almost to the dollar the amount dh needed to pay for tuition. We drove that car until our first child was born and while dented, it was a constant reminder to us that God hears our needs and provides.

I'm pretty sure that is what we have. It was bought at Target for about that same price. I can measure for sure.... but if you're wondering if all the tiles fit across the top, the answer is yes. Ok- I just measured and it is the 22 x 35 board. Works great.

This happened to my ds (14). One the first day and the second just a few days later. We were told it was because there probably was moisture on the tooth. He had the tongue suction thing too but it is a lot for them to undergo all at once. They waited a week and we went back and they fixed them. No problems. He has popped off 2-3 others in the last year. One tooth is way out of line and no matter how they bumper the above tooth it is the friction against the lower one. They just keep putting it back on- the sooner the better is what they told us. I wouldn't stress and leave that practice just yet. It may have even been a new hygienist.

obligatory other He commutes +6 hours once a week so we can stay where we are, which includes home school. He's gone greater than 50% of the time. He'd still be gone but we'd gain 2 days a month to move. There are other factors as well for older boys in public jr/high school. But, he wants it this way and so we make it work.

10-year-old talking to himself CONSTANTLY
Maeintx replied to Moxie's topic in General Education Discussion Board
You just described my 8 almost 9 yo boy. My 10-yo does it too but not as much. I just keep redirecting them. -
Like everything, not all pediatric dentists are the same. For us, 3 of our 4 boys see our regular dentist. The fourth has special needs. We tried 3 different peds dentists until we found the perfect one. The first 2 did not want us in the room. The third office, that we love, encouraged me to actually sit in the chair and hold ds (we started when he was 4 at that office.) All the parents seem to go back except the teens. It is a little more expensive but not a huge disparity.

Telling your child he has aspergers... or sids... or??
Maeintx replied to BMW's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Thank you for the name of this book. I just ordered it off Amazon- gotta love Amazon Prime. My son has PDD-NOS but if tested now would probably fit Asperger's. We've talked a bit about quirks but I want to give him more info now to reassure him that the quirks aren't necessarily negatives. I'm looking forward to reading this book and maybe reading it aloud with him. FWIW- I wasn't overly impressed with the Parenthood episode either. I saw a commercial and decided to DVR it.
