I hope I can write this so it makes sense and the Hive can help me solve this problem. In a nutshell, Blue Shield of NE NY has an active family policy that we did not enroll in & are not paying for. We want it to go away!
Ins is apparently thru dh's former employer, according to BS. (new CEO brought in his own senior leadership team, dh & rest of old team were let go.) We did utilize COBRA until dh's new employer's ins went into effect. But that ended 9 months ago - and we cancelled COBRA in writing and stopped paying for COBRA. The insurance company acknowledges that the policy was stopped then but it was reactivated 10-01-14.
I have left numerous voicemails w/ the dir of HR at former employer. No return calls.
I have contacted the broker company that the employer uses to buy health insurance. COBRA dept. says this coverage is not thru them. Employer's rep at broker company says there is NO WAY a mistake like this can happen and refuses to look into problem. :glare:
Blue Shield says they can do nothing to cancel policy - they need to receive a notice from the broker. One Customer Service rep said she would look into it, but I have not heard back. Other reps just confirm policy is still active & there is a note to look into the policy.
I contacted the NY Dept. of Financial Services (dept. of insurance is in this group.) Was told they could do nothing ... but customer service rep kept laughing ... said she had never heard of this problem before. Also spoke to her supervisor, he also laughed but had no advice.
How can I get this insurance to go away? We did not sign up for it and we are not paying for it. I am worried that our "real" health insurance will somehow discover the BS of NE NY policy & not cover our medical expenses. My other thought is that this is somehow a scam, but can't figure out how ... No claims have been filed w/ this insurance as of today. If it matters, the BS still has our old address listed.
We no longer live in NY so I can't just go in person to broker's office or to dh's former employer. We now live about 20 hours away. Am I just imagining that our "real" insurance company could find out about this policy and/or if they did know about it, there would be no negative impact?
I am sure that somehow this policy can be abolished; I just don't know what my next step should be. Or, if this is really a non-issue, somebody please tell me. It just bothers me that someone was able to use our names, birthdates & social security #s & create a medical policy. Thanks!!!!
