  1. This does not surprise me at all about Evergreen. It is perfectly in line with their reputation. I remember hearing *unusual* stories about them from back when I was in grade school. I was (and still am) quite  by some of their antics.
  2. Salsa is much better than Muzzy. That said, when my kiddos were pre-school age they loved Muzzy. ETA: Thinking about it more, it may be that they loved Muzzy because the weren't allowed to watch much t.v. Anything on the screen was a treat for them. Salsa was more enjoyable, but it was not free back then. We had access to it for about 6 months, when it aired on a Spanish network.
  3. I'm trying really hard to keep these secret from my dd so I can give them to her for Christmas. It's so hard to not show her them right now!
  4. I'm crying. Thank you for sharing. Hopefully your post will help other families become stronger.
  5. One of our favorite restaurants is in Titusville: Dixie Crossroads.
  6. http://www.hrc-la.org/doc.asp?id=36 How much notice in advance does a tenant have to give before moving? To end a periodic rental agreement (month-to-month), a tenant must give the landlord proper written notice before vacating. If you pay rent monthly, you must give at least 30 days advance notice. If you pay rent weekly, you must give at least 7 days advance notice. (Civil Code Section 1946) According to this, I think that you are only obligated to pay 30 days of rent from the time of your notice. However, if you originally asked to stay until Nov. 30th, then I would think you would have to pay through the 30th (just guessing). Maybe you can give them a "new" notice today and then you would only have to pay for the next 30 days. The other factor is, it doesn't sound like you actually gave any notice, but rather asked for an extension from the landlord's notice. Hmmm...... I suggest you call the Housing Rights Center. Maybe they can clarify this for you. (800) 477-5977. I have no knowledge of this organization, I just found them doing an google search. If they don't offer free advice, then ask them who does.
  7. We use it for the Rosetta Stone access, but haven't done any of their classes yet.
  8. I found this information on Amazon: "To watch Amazon Instant Video content offline, tap Download to save the video to your Kindle Fire to watch later. While downloading, you'll see an Options button. Tap this button to Pause or Cancel your download. Once your video has finished downloading, tap Watch Now." Yeah! I will get these videos & we can watch them on the Kindle during road trips.
  9. This works great for my dd. We have structure with certain subjects, but history and science are done through interesting magazines, books, and educational shows. I am amazed at how much history my dd knows; much more than I did at that age (heck, even more than I do now in many areas). I learned history through public school textbooks. She is learning it through interesting & engaging material. She remembers it and enjoys learning it. I highly recommend Calliope and Cobblestone magazines, and Horrible Histories books (by Terry Deary) for this. DD just loves them and reads all the time. I will say that prior to switching to this method, she read through, and did some of the activity books, for SOTW. This gave her a good foundation for understanding history chronologically. I think that with high school looming, we may go back to a more formal approach soon, but this method was great for elementary / middle school.
  10. I remember reading an article that said colleges are sending out more mailings to students who do not meet their profile student. They do this as a way to get more applications, which then lowers their acceptance rate, and makes them appear to be more "selective." :glare:
  11. I'm sick of it, too. While watching football yesterday, I would root for the team with the least amount of pink! I think it has turned into a huge marketing scam. Just look at football. All those pink gloves, socks, shoes, arm bands, referee clothes....to be worn once?? What a waste of money. If the NFL wants to support breast cancer research, just donate the $$ they spent on wear-one-time clothes.
  12. :iagree: I would expect a low of $7.00/hr & high of $10.00/hr; depending on the type of work & how well it was done. I also agree with others that elderly are likely to pay less.
  13. When dd was in 5th & 6th grade, she used Time4Learning for English/Language Arts. I thought it did a phenomenal job of helping her with reading comprehension, and she really enjoyed it.
  14. My dd struggles with math. She LOVES Life of Fred. However, she does not necessarily learn math from it. She needs more direct instruction. We mainly use CLE, but she likes to get out LOF and read through it on her own. She "does" the problems. Usually that means she "copies" the answers, but she enjoys it & I am sure there is some subconscious learning taking place. This year, she said she was going to learn economics. So, she's reading through Pre-Algebra w/ Econ. Maybe she's not directly learning math, but she is enjoying it and learning something. I do not think LOF is random in its approach or scope and sequence. I think it's very well thought out and I like the explanations. Frequently I use his explanations & approach to help dd in CLE or other curriculums. It has made me a better math teacher.
  15. I have learned the hard way that my dd can. not. take. math. breaks. She forgets everything, too. We use CLE, and I really like it. Recently, though, I ordered some Keys To....Fractions, Decimal, and Percents to solidify her knowledge and give her extra practice. The Keys To series are quite cheap and provide lots of review. Maybe try a few of those? Another idea is IXL. I think you can do 20 problems/day for free. Khan academy might provide some help. You could back up the CLE a few light units and re-do some from last year. Someone else mentioned Time4Learning. We used that years ago. The math was animated and fun, & I loved the language arts/reading. It's about $20/month, but your ds might only need a month to get back to speed.
  16. Sorry all, I've been away from the boards. Thanks for your input. Cathmom, I think you've expressed my concerns well. We live in an area with a high percentage of Mexicans. Most of the kids, while native speakers, incorporate a lot of slang/Spanglish in their speech. I have more thinking to do on this one. Maybe we'll just stick with team fundraisers for now.
  17. My ds has a teammate that needs financial help for team dues. He is 15 or 16 and is fluent/native in Spanish. He does not want a handout, but would be happy to work. My dd13 is outsourced for Spanish. Her teacher uses Avancemos 3. This is a new teacher for us, and she gives tons of homework. I think my dd will be fine because she's pretty natural at learning languages, but I am wondering how I can incorporate ds's teammate as a tutor. I doubt teammate has ever had any formal Spanish grammar instruction. Dd is probably far above him for that. But, I'm certain there can be value by hiring this boy....if I can figure out what they can do together. I don't think it would work to say, "Okay, just talk to each other in Spanish for the next hour." He could probably review her homework and find any obvious errors. I don't see that taking too long, though. Any suggestions?
  18. :iagree: Free, easy, immersion & perfect for a kindergartner. Nothing beats audio/visual immersion.
  19. :iagree::iagree: I was thinking the same thing when I saw the thread title. I personally don't use them because I want my caffeine fix cheap, but I really had to pop in and see if Bill was here.
  20. I don't have 3 sons, but I do have 3 brothers. Most of the above adjectives do not fit their personalities.
  21. My dd had a 3rd grade teacher who assigned busy work homework "just so the kids can get used to doing homework." Ugh. If kids didn't complete it, (even if they had been sick, and came back the next day w/o the homework done that they never received in the first place because they HAD BEEN SICK the day before), then they had to stay inside for recess. I complained loudly to the teacher & principal. The principal agreed with me, but the teacher kept doing it anyway.
  22. I found ours by asking the local music shops. Sometimes school band teachers take on private students.
