  1. I've not had this happen with bananas, but I do have the same problem with kiwis bought at Costco. I've had big plastic containers of them that never moved past rock hard. Now I never buy kiwis without making sure they are slightly soft. My guess is that they were picked too soon.
  2. DS is doing an engineering REU this summer. He only applied to 3 or 4. He had no prior research experience, but an excellent GPA and faculty recommendations, and strong prior work experience. My take is a bit different from other posters. DS was thrilled to be offered the position because he intends to go straight to grad school after undergrad. He both needed and wanted research experience. But, it is definitely not well-paid compared to his other options. His REU pays a $6,000 stipend plus housing plus travel expenses for 10 weeks. This is $15/hour plus extras. Last summer he made $22/hr (no housing) at his internship and had he returned this year it would have been more. This summer he also turned down an offer (to take the REU) of $24/hr plus housing plus travel at a company in his specialized area of interest. The internships also encourage 12 or 13 weeks of employment, rather than just 9 or 10 at most REU's. So, he's effectively making 50% less at his REU than he was offered in industry. Add that to the crappy way that REU pay is taxed at a higher rate (unearned income vs earned income). There was definitely priority hiring for women and minorities at his REU, as they make up the majority of participants in an engineering field.
  3. Is there one form that can be used for the United States? If you live in State A, attend school in State B, summer intern in State C, and regularly drive through State D - would you need to complete 4 different sets of forms?
  4. We're very fortunate with our current 19yo. He has a research position this summer that lines up great with his interests. This fall he starts his senior year for his bachelor's in electrical engineering. He's looking at beginning applications for PhD programs.
  5. I bolded the pertinent parts. Perhaps re-read my post before hurting your head so badly on the brick wall. Nope, your IRL experiences are not wrong. But neither are mine or anyone else's. They are just different.
  6. Our state flagship is ranked top 25 - 30 in engineering, depending on who's doing the ranking. It is a very, very highly regarded university. Nevertheless... The local community college where my son attended for DE has STEM classes that exceed that of the university. His engineering physics class started with over 30 students and not enough space in the classroom for everyone. The professor was completely unconcerned about that. Why? The class ended with only 10 students. Over 2/3 dropped. That is normal for her. Many of the students who drop then go on to take it at the highly regarded university because, well, it's not so darned hard there. I'm sure this is an outlier. The professor told the class that she taught at the level of any top university in the United States. She would not dumb down anything just because it was a community college. And she didn't. By the way, my ds loved her! He finally had a teacher/professor for probably the first time ever really get him excited and pushed him to think deep. He'd been craving this type of learning - he'd been mostly public schooled. (Yes, he is highly gifted and had the stats to play the admissions lottery at any university). So, I think the misinformation is assuming that highly ranked universities automatically have stronger classes than a lower ranked - or even, (ghast!) - a lowly community college.
  7. Thank you, Lanny. We know several Americans who have been victims of terrorism overseas recently. One was in France. Yes, it was Islamic terrorism. Luckily, enough people were there to pull the terrorist of the woman before he could kill her (her terrible crime was that she was wearing shorts). The police barely bothered. They said this type of thing happens all the time. It didn't make American news, probably because no one died. The other incident was covered up by our government at the time. It was in a country not mentioned in this thread. I won't say anymore because the family was directed to not discuss it. Sure, everything in life has an element of danger. Nobody is denying that. Nobody has said otherwise. ETA: These incidents that I personally know of where not in the news. I have to wonder how many more terrorist incidents there are that are never covered and only close family and friends know about.
  8. This is so dependent on the kid's natural math ability. I voted based on what I thought would be possible for an average math student, 12 months. But probably would have voted 7-12 months if it had been an option. I also voted based on what I have seen from a typical public school math class for an average track kid.
  9. I do understand your frustration, but in my experience the communication you have received from your realtor/assistant is not that unusual.
  10. DD was flying United on Christmas in 2015. Her flight was delayed significantly enough that she missed the big family meal. The delay was WEATHER related. There was nothing United could do, and compensation was definitely not required or expected. Oh, and she had likely booked that ticket using prior bump compensation $$. But, dd loves to play the system and at least try. So she sent United an email politely explaining how her Christmas was "ruined" and they promptly issued her a travel voucher. I think it was for $200. NOT saying that United's behavior in these recent events is excusable or right!! Just saying that, at least sometimes, they do go above and beyond.
  11. I may be in the minority, but I am glad that airlines overbook. We love taking advantage of bump compensation. DD did a LOT of her flying back and forth for college on bump $$.
  12. "According to United’s contract, passengers who receive priority, i.e. those who are least likely to get bumped, include “passengers who are Qualified Individuals with Disabilities, unaccompanied minors under the age of 18 years, or minors between the ages of 5 to 15 years who use the unaccompanied minor service, will be the last to be involuntarily denied boarding if it is determined by UA that such denial would constitute a hardship.†http://www.foxnews.com/travel/2017/04/11/bumped-from-flight-know-your-rights-before-fly.html
  13. Lucy Stoner, We disagree. I am bowing out.
  14. Then I will change my wording. I will not put up roadblocks when my family needs to reach me. I will not make it harder for them to reach me. Especially in an emergency.
  15. Yes, Marbel. I do not want to put any sort of restrictions on how loved ones are supposed to contact me during an emergency. Holy cow! When my son was home alone, but I was 15 minutes from getting there after dd's late dance class, and someone was trying to break in - and he had no idea if dude's buddies had succeeded at a different door/window and were actually in the house - I am so glad he did not have to think "hmm, I wonder how I should get ahold of mom and tell her to not come into this potentially very dangerous situation. Let's see - for emergencies after 10:00pm I must call. But, wait, I am currently hiding while waiting for the police. If I call and start talking to mom, and someone made it inside, they could hear me and find me. Hmm. What should I do?" Heck, no. I will not restrict my family on how to contact me in an emergency.
  16. Great point. And those of us with teens, new drivers & college students could certainly get their help in setting up a dnd for texts if we needed or wanted. But I do not want that. Sometimes emergency contact is made by text. And sometimes it is made by non-family member's phone. No one can predict an emergency and how it will play out.
  17. What? That's never been our experience, even recently on United. If the consideration for bumping is $800, we get a voucher worth $800. Now, the annoying part is when you've been bumped (we always voluntarily do this) and you have several vouchers left with nominal amounts remaining on them. Those cannot be combined. But the initial voucher is always for the full amount of the bump.
  18. Well, just recently my phone decided it would no longer be a phone for awhile. It would send/receive texts. But it would not place/receive calls. That lasted about 1/2 a day, then it decided to be fully functional again. There are also definitely times when texting is better. After calling 911, ds texted me when someone was trying to break into the house. Texting is much better when you're not sure if someone is in your house and can hear you while you're trying to hide. I will not, not, not put my phone on do not disturb. An emergency is an emergency. You have no idea when it will happen and what method (call or text) or who's phone (your family member, an emergency service, a good samaritan, etc) will be used. Batteries die. Phones break. To me, texting after normal hours is rude. If you wouldn't call or knock on someone's door at that time, then you shouldn't be texting either.
  19. I know a young lady who graduated from Gonzaga. I've known her since she was very young. Seeing how she changed during her time at Gonzaga, well, I'm not surprised they would hire someone like Click.
  20. And, again. Terry Pratchett. My teenage son loved, loved, loved his books. He also liked some other series/authors mentioned here, but Pratchett stands above all others.
  21. I don't doubt you and can see this being true. However, I know with absolute certainty that some companies actively seek out students from schools like Grove City College. And I am not talking about just faith based or politically conservative companies. I am talking about companies that want solid, mature, employees with high ethical standards. Sure, these type of students attend all types of universities. But attending a school like GCC does immediately say something about your character to many employers. So it is probably a wash. You may be discriminated against for some employers, but also be actively recruited for others.
  22. Huh. I wonder if this explains one of my dc's unexplained stomach pain when he was younger. IIRC, it stopped around the time he started getting allergy shots.
  23. I was just thinking about you today. I'm so happy for you and your family!
