  1. How bout a University Model School setup? I can imagine Monday, Wednesdays and half Fridays for some, and Tuesdays, Thursdays and half Fridays... (or instead of Half Fridays.... Fridays for some... Saturdays for others.) If we really wanna be like other countries... we could do Saturdays. At least children tutored privately do some Saturdays... (Our Japanese neighbors loaded up every Saturday, so they could stay up with their peers back home *Japan) Of course, on alternate days... they are with parents or others... they could be doing homework, computer work, nature study... whatever is decided:-) Carrie:-)
  2. So excited to see you able to journey there... Keep us updated.... How Exciting! Carrie
  3. I saw it too... Here's the deal. Mom has baby, government decides what to suggest for pumping full of different vaccines.... doctor asks what school they are going to... kids start school as soon as formula feeding is established. Of course, dinner will be served at school, if parents can't be trusted to feed said children. No summer berries to pick anymore, play time not needed, except for recess at school... I mean... If you want daycare fine! I used it for a while. I'd use it again....if I wanted to... but school mandated or paid for at age 3 or 4...and for the whole year...for the whole country.. is crazy! If boarding school works for certain high crime areas... fine... But here, I'd like the choice... and hope we'll continue to have it...and Pray... that my school choice isn't changed.... Maybe I want Hope and not Change:-) AT least not the way it's lookin' I do agree that school the whole year is fine, just with only the hours and the days they already have. In fact, they could probably cut down the hours, if they did this. I think we need to separate teaching hours needed -v- child care needed.... and that would help us with our "problem". Carrie:-)
  4. I've seen some whiteboard colors, too (like crayons) Carrie:-)
  5. I would try the salt kind first. I wouldn't want regular due to the ingredients... Carrie
  6. Vis-a-Vs? Or however you spell that..... they are the ones you use for overhead projectors. I've heard they sometimes work for wet ones.. Carrie
  7. Hi There, I live in Oregon, and next year must send in my letter about homeschooling my son. He will be 7. I'm wondering if there are reasons that I shouldn't register him as a first grader. For us, that means he'd test a year later.... (SO, I'm considering registering him a grade lower than his actual age would allow him to be) Down the road, are there reasons that I should consider keeping him in the grade his age schoolmates would be? I'm not worried about him ever going to Public school... so other reasons:-) Also, I don't consider it an ethical issue... I'm just looking at practical. Thanks! Carrie:-)
  8. Vivienne looks more balanced to me, it also matches your name:-) I, too, am curious about Jackson, is it family?? Carrie:-)
  9. You know, years ago, my father went to school with Chris. I remember, from back then, my father talking about how he was top of the class ....and super smart. I feel so sorry for them and for their family. While I know that they are Christians, and so there is another view on things, the earthly part of you wants to scream, "WHY?". I've heard that they have a lovely family and I just look at them and think, "So Young!" It's hard to understand.... Carrie
  10. Didn't you say you were going to give her some nickname, like Daisy? or Dassy? or something? Then, I'd pick the middle, while thinking of the nickname, too. I like Kate:-) or Beth... Carrie
  11. That is beyond putting up with differences. That is just WRONG. I would be talking with the teacher. I also would insert a small recorder so that she can push "record" if something like this happens again! Carrie
  12. Hey There, You're in OR:-) You should bring me a batch:-) YUM! Carrie
  13. Hi There, Next year, I'm planning on my daughter doing Challenge A, Veritas Press' Omnibus II or a local Charter, Classical School. SO, as far as Challenge, what are you liking? Not liking? What level are your students at? What do you wish you had down more preparation for? I'm wondering what I will wish I had taught her... Any hints about Challenge? Feel Free to pm me if you don't want to publicly post. Carrie:-)
  14. We love CC (Classical Conversations) and it fits well with my personality and my kids. I'm laid back, and found it to be more than enough for my then 5 year old... kindergarten aged son... and my daughter did it and the afternoon program...which was IEW and Grammar. You can just go to see one in action one day...and see if it works... Some will have you go to an Open House, first. Carrie:-)
  15. Cursive First from SWR... it's about $12 and you may want the clock stamp for $12:-) Carrie
  16. Well, Classical Conversations has homeschool once a week programs all over...http://www.firstclasshomeschool.org/Welcome.html does too, and if you check your homeschool large groups... (like ours is OCEAN in Oregon... or OHEN?? for secular) then they sometimes have them listed... Some of groups can be found by googling with your state... Carrie:-)
  17. I wanted a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, but looked at the humane society first(petfinder.com )... drove 4 hrs for him... it was marked that he was food aggressive (found that out when I got there) I wanted to see him after the drive... I took my hand and "shoved" it towards the dog to see if he flinched... got aggressive... left. He just looked at me.... and I was hooked. He played tennis with us... and I said the aggressiveness doesn't look right. (I still think that was a lie or misprint) I fed him separately from the kids for a while. (He was so aggressive:-) that I had to feed him kibble by kibble before he would eat.) After a while of getting to know him... I realized that he couldn't growl or bite to save his life. (Proven while we were at the park...he got attacked... and couldn't protect himself.) Anyway, Humane society dogs.... can be great! They aren't my responsibility...so I don't feel I have to get one... but I loved the fact that we saved his life. (he really was going to be put to sleep...so we did save his life:-) Love Brownie... our Black dog:-) Carrie:-)
  18. Best gift my dh ever gave me was adding the gps part to my phone. Excellent... wonderful... lovely... best friend!! You can get a refurbished one for around $100. I save that from just saving gas:-) Carrie:-)
  19. My poor child, in public school, couldn't read well until 3rd grade. Her older sister could, and she just had a mental block. I finally let her read Harry Potter... and that was the beginning of her reading!! Carrie:-)
  20. Really sweet.... what is proven to be able to be transmitted through br**st milk?? I'd have no problem with a friend nursing my babies... I'm not sure I'd feel ok about so many... hmmm. BUT, formula has some issues, too. Carrie:-)
  21. I have a 6 year old... and when he was 5, we started attending a church that he had to sit through. He ended up being able to do it. Training is what it's about. Training.. a few minutes at a time... and also having activities. I take his unifix cubes and dump them on the floor before the service....or cuisinaire rods...etc. Coloring books...going over what's expected before... And, having a daily worship time at home, where they are to sit on their bottoms...sing when appropriate... listen to a bible time (you reading it) etc. Believe me, my child is the wiggliest... little guy.. who would jump off a mountain top if he could... It's possible... it just takes a certain amount of understanding, clear expectations... practice... and of course... expecting the level of obedience that I am sure you already do:-) Carrie:-)
  22. I think it could be for a couple of reasons... it's the first time a mom or dad thinks that oustide schooling might be better, themselves. After all, I feel like I'd have to lock my child in a box for them to not be ok until 5th or 6th. BUT, this year (6th) I've started to really look at what she needs for LIFE:-) for college... etc.... I actually would send her to a Classical Christian school. That's, of course, if there was one close...and if I could afford it:-) While I wonder why children are sent so early... sending kids when they are 13 or so... doesn't sound so bad. But, of course, what helped you get him where he is... is what will help you decide what's best for his last few years that you're responsible for... Carrie:-)
  23. I saw Lively Latin and it looks good. My mom (who was teaching the Latin) said it looked good in the presenting department:-) That said, I'd want my 11 year old moving on... at a faster clip... depending on where you want him/her to be. The 8 and 9 year old.... have a bit more time, maybe:-) My daughter was 8 when she started Latina Christiana I and then 9 with LC II and 10 when she started Henle I...Units 1,2 and part through 3. My mom isn't teaching them anymore, so I'm having my daughter teach me Henle this year... we'll see how it goes. I want my kids reading books in Latin... in Highschool... Hope they can chug along.. Carrie:-)
  24. Would you be under their law, if you're a temporary resident? I would think not... Carrie:-)
