Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize
SonshineLearner replied to Jennifer's topic in General Education Discussion Board
There was a lady, up for the prize the same year as Gore, who had smuggled babies out of camps in bags. Upon being found, she had her bones broken into several pieces and I believe left for dead. Not only did she live, but she lived until old age. She had kept a jar with names so that she could reunite families that were still alive after the war. She lost to Gore. Bummer. Even his wife would agree, at this point, I believe. But, Obama was honest saying he didn't deserve the prize and that he took possession of the award sharing with others....and took it as momentum....and on behalf of the soldiers... SO.... more to come, I'm sure... Carrie -

Is there anything like Classical Conversations...
SonshineLearner replied to Mandy in TN's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
If you wanna start it, there is:-) You're allowed to take the material, and use it as long as you don't charge. It'd be easy to tweak the "Christian" out of it... and if I was gonna do that, I'd add a cycle between cycle 1 and 2, I think. Well, whatever it took to have a normal four year cycle. You could still use Veritas Cards, but start wherever you feel comfortable.... I can TOTALLY see it happening. :-) You can purchase the cds for the info... for $30 each cycle.... Carrie:-) -

Finally feeling the love for Singapore Math!
SonshineLearner replied to Tidbits of Learning's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
So, I just purchased the below books, which I hope wasn't a horrible mistake.... and then started reading this list. I have a 6th grader, but when I looked at these, I decided to purchase them.... because my daughter may start a school next year that will be using Singapore.... Did I just make an expensive mistake?? Carrie:-) (She'll be in 7th next year.... so I think I'll have to make it through one extra book after this.... Summer school??) 5A Home Instructor's Guide 5A Textbook US Edition 5B Home Instructor's Guide 5B Textbook US Edition 6A Home Instructor's Guide 6A Textbook US Edition -

Duncan, Oklahoma
SonshineLearner replied to SonshineLearner's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Funny, While my dad was in Law School, in Tulsa, we finally got a little black and white tv to watch. (Because they wanted to watch a football game!) So, our shows that we were allowed to watch were... Perry Mason.... and Rawhide! Carrie:-) PS, I still never went to Duncan!! -
How's living in Duncan? I have a homeschooling friend who might end up moving there... Is it close to OK City? Thanks! Carrie

Car Schooling suggestions needed
SonshineLearner replied to jg_puppy's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Jim Weiss has some great stories on cd, too. He's the one who reads SOTW, and if you check his site, you can pick ones from the part of history you're studying. I like these Questions with Answers, by Dana Dirksen, if you're wanting Christian ones. http://songsforsaplings.com/ We've found them to be wonderful. There are three volumes of about 20 or so questions and answers.... and good music, too. Check your library for the Weiss cds, too, because ours has some of them... Carrie:-) -
Have you ever frozen an Apple Crisp???
SonshineLearner replied to KatieJ's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Thanks! This looks really yummy. Apples are one of my newest allergies... unless they are in some way processed. SO, I don't get to really enjoy them raw... So, I'll have to try this so that I can get my share of apple consumption:-) Carrie -
That is SOOO funny. When I first started reading it... I was thinking, "I don't think so...." and then I got to the bottom of your email:-).... I moved while I was still pregnant.... 11 1/2 years ago. Shouldn't have been a problem for him, since he wanted me to have an abortion.. and he said that he wanted me to move.... and then, of course, now... he says... that he didn't want me to move... only not to be with me:-) Bummer for him! I'm as far away as I could be without dropping into the water:-) (Him in MI.. me in OR:-) Funny how he says that he doesn't see why I'd wanna be in their business... since he told me so much of it before... unsolicited.... I was so warped/wrapped that I listened... trying to understand why he wanted to be with her..... (BTW, supposedly it was because she offered to pay his way through his Masters... wonder if she knows this.) I will be SO sad when my child is 18.. and our time at this stage is through.... but SO HAPPY when I no longer have to deal with him!!! (at least in this way....) Of course... weddings... graduations.. grandchildren... but not with this type of control... 6.5 years..... Carrie:-)

My first CRISIS moment

Could the buttons be labeled so this doesn't happen?? How sad if it's for real and no one gets out cuz they think someone is messing up with the system? Carrie:-) -
Which prayers are memorized in Prima Latina?
SonshineLearner replied to Jane's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We aren't Catholic, and yet we say the table blessing each night. My son is also working only Pater Noster (sp?) with my mom. Our Father.... The only ones we wouldn't say... are the ones that are directed to Mary or Saints, and I'm not sure they are in there anyway. Most of the ones that are in there.. are fine for Protestants. Really, my mom worked through Latina Christiana I and II and it was fine. :-) Carrie
