Neurosurgery in Atlanta?

My mom was in a car accident in Albany, GA yesterday and has been told she has two bleeds on her brain, a concussion, and possibly a broken hip. They are saying it's possible she will need to be transferred to Atlanta for surgery. Does anyone have any experience with a neurosurgeon or hospital in Atlanta? She was on vacation and lives in Nashville,  and we live in Texas. I am trying to get to her, but I am concerned that a decision will need to be made on her transfer before I get there.

Thank you for any help!

Alison

I know no one specific, but I would say choose an Emory Hospital if you have no other information.  I've been very happy with my stays at Emory Hospitals (and given how much I hate hospitals, that's saying a lot) and I've felt like I've gotten top notch care from my Emory doctors.

Thank you for the help, hugs, and prayers! I can't believe how overwhelmed I feel, I thought I was better under pressure than this.  We are waiting on the results of a scan this morning to determine the next step. She is much more confused today than she was yesterday, so I'm not sure what to think about that.

all I know is ds gf has to go to atlanta from florida to consult with a neurosurgeon.  he's supposed to be one of the best at what he does - and they had to wait to get in with him.

good luck.  nothing to mess around with.

Praying for yoyr mom and for you! The neuro ICU is an intense experience.

No experience with Atlanta, but I live in Nashville and my Dh is a lifelong neuro patient. He had brain surgery for a bleed in 2015 and has a great doc, if your mom needs follow up care after she's home.

I would really appreciate your dh's neuro's name! Surprisingly, they released her this afternoon with instructions to go home and find a neurologist and orthopedist right away. It seems very fast and she was not doing well at all when she was released. She is in a lot of pain, unable to put any weight on one leg or lift one arm, and very confused/disoriented. She kept telling the nurses she was very uncomfortable with being released and they said they could medicate her enough to get her home. So, she is in a car with the friend she was with and is heading home. I believe they are outside Atlanta now. She is too medicated to communicate well and he wants to just drop her off at her house and check on her tomorrow. I doubt she needs to be spending the night alone tonight and have no idea how she will get up the 4 steps into her house.  I'm scrambling now trying to find someone to stay the night with her. I had not even considered she would be going all the way home today.

OMG! Have him take her to Emory! That's insane! Or at least go straight to Vandy when they get to Nashville.

My sister and I have begged them to go to Emory or Vandy! At this point, Mom is refusing to go back to a hospital and I don't think we can convince her today. I would feel much better if she would get checked out at either of those hospitals tonight. She is being stubborn and just wants to get home and sleep.

Oh, Alison. I'm so sorry.

My family recently had a horrible loss that involved a brain bleed.

If she can get back into an ER like people are suggesting, she should.

I can't understand medicating her if there was a question of her being neurologically intact or not.

((((Hugs))))

I'm so sorry for your loss!

I was surprised they were willing to medicate her to release her, too. She should be home any time now and is still refusing to go to a hospital. But, I did convince her to have an immediate follow up with her primary care doctor. I hope she can get in tomorrow.

Did they actually do an MRI or CT scan?  It's strange they would send her home with her symptoms.   You should be able to find out which hospitals in your state specialize in neuro/stroke/brain emergencies.  Maybe you could call your local clinic and they can tell you?  In our state, there are really just a handful of hospitals that are highly trained in this area, and that's where all of the acute patients are sent.

Yes, they did a ct scan after the accident that showed 2 brain bleeds and they did a second scan 24 hours later. The doctor told her the bleeds were almost gone in the second one and that she was being released.

She was very irrational and still confused when we talked to her late last night. She had made it home and just wants to sleep. In my opinion, they gave her pain medication that is too strong. It was easier to convince her she needed care when she could feel pain. She has no idea how unlike herself she sounds. I'm hoping when she wakes up this morning I can talk to her before she takes any meds. I can't tell if the confusion is the brain injury or the meds.
