Are your knives sharp?

yes - we take care of them (re: *never* put them in the dishwasher as all that food debris swirling around and dishwasher soap can pit the blades) and sharpen them regularly. dh bought a set of wusthof last summer - they go through tomato like a hot knife through butter. I thought he'd get rid of his old knives (the newest is 30 years old, and still sharp) . . . . . no such luck.

Yes. I just got them professionally sharpened before Christmas, and we've been keeping them up with a steel and a ceramic rod that the knife guy recommended. Having them done professionally made a HUGE difference in ease of cutting. I really couldn't believe how much better they work now!

Of course, I have a nice scar on one of my fingers to prove how much sharper the knives are now! I've never mastered the art of chopping like a chef with my hand in that weird position.

Yup. My family all has Cutco knives. They are awesome! My grandmother has had hers for over 50 years and my mom has hers for about 30. I've had mine for about 12 years. Cutco will sharpen them for free for life. I've never had mine sharpened (other than doing it with my own Cutco sharpener at home), but my mom and grandmother have both done it once. My knives are definitely sharp. I HATE cutting with dull knives. I feel helpless. My knives are one of my prized processions. When we go on vacation, I put 2 or 3 of my knives in sleeves and take them along.

I also NEVER put mine in the dishwasher.

My MIL is "scared" of my knives and complains they are too sharp....I can barely cut with hers. :tongue_smilie:

PS - Dull knives are more dangerous to chop with.

We never had sharp knives until I bought this great sharpener from Amazon. It's less than $10, takes all of about 10 seconds to use, and works great. Last night I made a stir fry, and cutting all the veggies was a total breeze - even a pleasure.

I read a comment from some chef once: "Show me someone who says they don't like to cook, and I'll show you someone who's never used sharp knives." Now that I have sharp knives, I couldn't agree more. The difference is like night and day.

I have two GOOD knives, a serrated one that will cut through darn near anything, and a great Chef's knife with those dents in the side to make food slide off more easily. I have a couple smaller steak knives that are decent, but really you don't need a whole set. It is way better to have 2 or 3 really great knives than a whole set of cheapy ones.

I used to take them to George & Son downtown, before George retired (the shop was nothing short of magical, the kind we'll just never see again). Now DH does them... not as well, but they're pretty darned sharp.
