Tammy
Just curious....If you purchased a new vehicle....when did you replace the battery for the first time? .
LaxMom
Um... 3 1/2 years. I just had to replace the battery last month, when the kids left the door open with the keys in the ignition while we were at a friend's house. Totally, un-jump-start-able flat. Not a bad life span for a battery that came with the car and suffered who knows how much draining while it was on the lot.
CookieMonster
I only ever have had to replace a battery on a car I bought well-used. But, just so you know, winter is battery-killing time. My husband used to work in the lead industry. They loved hard winters; many batteries bit the dust.
Guest Alte Veste Academy
Two years and 9 months of very hard use. Chrysler replaced it because it was still under warranty. It's 3 minutes to the park and to the library and 5 minutes to the grocery store. So, basically, my short trips equal short battery life. The car is not running long enough for the alternator to fully recharge the battery again before I stop the car. It's a bad cycle. Add that to the fact that the van has electric side doors and an electric hatch and the fact that the kids have left the interior lights on a few dozen times... Well, I think it wasn't really Chrysler's problem that the battery died but I'll take it for free anyway. :)
Mommyof4ks
One car was 3 years, my van 4 years, and my hubby's truck was 6 years (he only drives it 8 miles to work and back).
Mamagistra
We just replaced the battery in the Excursion after five years of use.
1cat2ferrets
9 years and still going strong? Yup, my Toyota Solara is going to be 9 years old in May and still has original battery in it!!!:tongue_smilie: I know I'm pushing my luck, so it'll probably get replaced soon. TraceyS/FL
Hmmm, a year ago last fall? I was at the school for speech for the youngest. It was dead. It was a mess, so my mom had it replaced. However, DH cleaned it up and put it in a tractor and it's still working, just needed a good charge. So that would have been at 3 years or so. Maria from IN
About 4 years--which was far too soon, considering the thing is under the backseat and requires far more cuss words than the Tall Bald Guy is willing to expend over such a once-menial chore. :001_smile:
Miss Sherry
When you do replace the battery, it is so worth it to pay more and have a good quality one.
tibbyl
Typically we have had to replace battery within 2 to 5 years. However, I bought a Datsun B210 in 1979. When it was 8 years old, an elderly man ran red light and totaled it. Amazingly, it still had its original battery.

Suzanne in ABQ
My Odyssey was only about 1 1/2 years old when the battery croaked. It was under warranty, though, so they just replaced it -- no questions asked. They didn't even test it. They just replaced it, based on my word. Desert Rat
Just replaced ours at 3 years. This is actually a pretty long time for a battery to last in the desert. In other vehicles 2 years is a good long time. The heat kills them!
abbeyej
4 years. Seemed soon to me, but reading these posts, maybe it was quite normal.
Tammy
I have a 2002 Toyota Sienna (purchased in Jan. 2002).....with the ORIGINAL battery. Of course it only has about 65,000 miles on it....but I do live in the sunshine state, LOL....south Florida to be exact. I asked my neighbor if I should just go ahead and change it out....so I don't get stranded anywhere (although I do have AAA....but...well....who wants to wait for them, LOL). He told me NO. I wonder how much longer it will last..... .
LaxMom
Um, you know you can just have it load tested, right? And that will indicate... well, something related to how it holds a charge and recovers from use, which evidently tells automotive technicians (because, let's face it, we just don't have mechanics anymore) something about whether it is about to leave you in a parking lot. Anyway, Sears or NTB or wherever should be able to do that.
Serendipity
We bought our little car in November of 1997 and replaced the battery in October 2008. It's a 1998 Chevy Prizm. So it lasted almost 11 years and wasn't out or anything, but our mechanic recommended we replace it when he gave my engine a tune-up. Crazy, huh? :)
Holly IN
First replacement was 4 yrs old after the purchase of new vehicle. Then 2nd replacement happened 3 yrs later (which was this year). Holly
Brigitte
For one of our cars the battery lasted 7 years. The other car has it's original battery and the car is 6.5 years old. They are Saabs with Saab batteries, if that makes any difference.
sassenach
My van is 5 years old and we're on our 3rd battery. I'm not sure why we've blown through so many.
Tree House Academy
I bought my car new in 2004 and I have yet to replace the battery.
SABE
Our minivan's battery had to be replaced at about 4.5 years and over 50k miles.
chiguirre
The first one lasted 4 years and the 2nd lasted 9 months. When it died, I got a new one free at Walmart because it was under warranty.
Susan in IL
Bought new in May 2002, replaced battery in Oct. 2008 - 83000 miles. It wasn't dead yet but getting harder to start. I decided I wanted it replaced before winter.
