StaceyinLA
I am trying to get ds ready for next year. He is in 8th grade and, admittedly, we aren't real on top of things right now. He's a smart one, strong reader (though he doesn't love to read), about ready for Algebra I (and I know he could've done this much earlier if it weren't for all our family issues this year), and picks things up quickly. The problem is that we just haven't gotten a lot done this past semester. I need to get him on track and ready for hs. I'm hoping that by seeing what your 9th graders have done, it'll give me an idea of what I need to have him catch up on in the next 7-8 months. Caryl
Omnibus 1 with the Spielvogel readings Conceptual Chemistry (Chem before Bio makes sense to me but her math skills are more suited to Conceptual Chem; if she really likes it she can take advanced chemistry as a Junior) Algebra I (Keys to, then Lial's beginning, then morphing to Lial's intermediate sometime this spring - for Algebra 2 which we'll finish by Sept 09. Then into Geometry) Bible Writing intensive (Mom's, with an eclectic mix of resources and tied into Omnibus for a full English credit) Other "english" type stuff is Word Roots and Editor in Chief (computer version) which she does a couple times a week for about 15-20 min. Latin (first year - yeah, I know... We started with Getting Started With Latin, which was pretty painless for all of us) Thinking Skills / Logic (Building Thinking Skills Verbal bk 3, then Fallacy Detective) Speech Web Design elective (she's building her own site) Horse Training Elective (finishing a 4 yo and starting a coming 3 yold - this is her passion right now, so I created a course around it for an elective). Deece in MN
Math ~ Finish Life of Fred Beginning Algebra and start Advanced Algebra, New Math Counts from Singapore for extra practice and Teaching Co. Algebra video lecture Literature ~ Middle Ages lit. based around a portion of Great Books of the Western Literary Tradition (I think that is the title) from Teaching Co. I have a list of 8 or 9 books to read and we will watch the corresponding lecture and I will use some of Teaching the Classics to help with discussion English ~ Grammar review with Fix It! and IEW for writing Science ~ Conceptual Physics. I don't have the lab manual so I will be coming up with my own experiments/labs to go with the book. History ~ World History using the Teaching Co. high school world history lectures and other readings with assignments. Foreign Language ~ Spanish using La Clase Divertida. The guy who made this program said that all 3 levels would equal 1 year of Spanish (I hope he is right!) so we will complete all 3 this year and then go into something else (looking into Auralog Tell Me More program). Elective ~ Not sure what to call this yet, but a study based on The Terror of History lectures from, yes you guessed it, Teaching Co. :) We are adding some readings and focusing more on the Inquisition and witch hunts. He is finding the lectures interesting, but the instructor has an accent that is hard for ds to follow. We will be doing another elective the second half of the year, but haven't decided yet what it will be. PE ~ Bowling (league and high school team) and jiu-jitsu I think that covers it. :)
