  1. that looks interesting. I'll give it some more attention. THX!
  2. I'm looking for a curriculum for American Literature for an 8th grade boy. Not Notgrass, TOG, Sonlight, or Lightning Lit. I don't want history or Bible, just literature study/analysis. I would like such authors as Poe, Hemingway, Hawthorne, Fitzgerald, Twain, London, etc. I prefer something structured. If anyone can tell me about Stogaugh's Skills for Literary Analysis from For Such a Time as This, I'd consider that, too.
  3. My 15dd got a 29 on her first try last fall, without any studying. We'll try again this coming fall.
  4. It's by the same publisher as Writers, Inc.. I want to use it for the writing portion of English 11 and 12. I bought the instructor's guide, but it is only marginally helpful. Mostly curious about what parts to use each year and pacing. Anyone?
  5. I, too, have an adult child who has made some really bad financial decisions. We have bailed him out once (and he has paid us back). He did it again. He was on his own. I advised him. I helped him find information and answered his questions, but he had to do it. It hurt me so much to tell him no, but that's what had to be done. He has a full scholarship to college- as long as he keeps up his grades. Well, he decided that college life was too fun to attend classes and do homework. Anyway, two semesters (so twice) he has failed classes (twice for too many absences) and lost his scholarship $. That means the school wants to be reimbursed. He is at a private school, so that amounts to $15,000 per semester. Ouch. He now has almost $30,000 in loan debt to pay back after graduation in a little over a year, when he could have had NONE. Now he has taken some of his loan $ and bought a car. Not just any car for simple transportation, but a nice Mustang. ARGH! Anyway, I agree with the others that it's so tough, but you can't keep bailing him out, you must make him deal with the consequences. Just adding that we bailed him out the first time because we understand it's hard adjusting to college life, etc and you can make mistakes. After that you must learn from those mistakes. I also will never let him go homeless or hungry.
  6. yes, she actually LIKES history. That said, my dh and I both know that our kids know more history now than we ever learned in school! This morning I discussed with her the option of seriously paring down TOG (yes, she's doing R) and trying to finish what we have. Then next yr switch to a text on Am. hist with a one semester geography, and then gov't/economics for sr year (already own Notgrass for that). So right now I'm working on a schedule to see how compact I can make it. It's sssooooo hard cutting out good books. We really enjoy Pageant of Philosophy, and will do core history and most of in-depth history. We're totally cutting literature, and most of worldview (except where it is used as a history reading). We were never using the gov't section. So, that's what it's come down to.
  7. He is about week 13, and by my schedule (I'm a box checker and scheduler) we should be on week 26. He's reading By Right of Conquest, and that seems to be taking a LLLLOOONNNGG time. He loved Amazing Leonardo DaVinci Inventions You Can Build Yourself. He says that the Church in History is the most boring of all. I have a hard time cutting so much out of a program, but that is the most economical idea seeing that I have all the books. I'll discuss this with him and see what he thinks.
  8. My 12yo ds is bogged down with TOG. We've done it for 1 1/2 yrs and love the content and books, but are WAY behind. My kids are real readers, so if they say they have too much reading to handle, I have to agree. Anyway, I need advice on where to place him for the rest of the school year. He is at the late Reformation, early explorers. I've checked out a few things, but want your opinion. THX!
  9. We've used TOG for 1 1/2 yrs and I love the programs content and books, etc. However, the sheer volume of work is just dragging us down (my 12 ds also, but I'll put that on the K-8 board). We're way behind and I've already trimmed the program down. So, what could I move her to? We're in yr 2, at approximately the Reformation, Henry VIII era. I just need something to transfer to for the remainder of the year. She has requested a textbook such as BJUP or ABeka. Would it be awful to just jump in one of their world history texts at the Reformation? Any opinions are welcome. THX
  10. no. my dd is a swimmer and that outfit isn't for actual swimming.
  11. I have only used the Shred for 6 days, starting last Monday. I'm doing level 1, obviously. It is HARD, but doable for someone with no physical issues except weak lungs and being out of shape. I have promised myself 6 weeks doing Shred before I decide whether or not to quit or change programs. I think that's fair to see results or not. I am planning on at least weekdays, but I'm going to try for Saturday, too, if I can. I was super sore and stiff until I finally noticed improvement on day 5. Good luck!
  12. I understand that NBC will start broadcasting the opening ceremonies at 7:30pm EST, and they don't go off until midnight.
  13. my bad. it's http://www.lampstandbookshelf.com :blushing:
  14. I just posted this on another similar thread, maybe it will help you: at www.lampstandpress.com homepage on the left go down to Resource List under Highlights. On that page you will see a Primary Resource List Click Here. This requires a log in, but I'm pretty sure this is where I got my detailed list, just for the levels I need. After logging in, click on the Resource List (bottom left) again and you should get a page allowing you to select your search parameters. Does that help?

  16. I'm 42, but only 10 lbs over. I lost it all, but gained some back, so I'm working on that. Also training for a 10-day backpacking trip this summer. I just started this video on Monday, so am still rather sore. Level 1 is doable.
  17. Yes, this is our need and hope. thanks for all the encouragement, ladies. I think she'll take it again early in the fall and we'll then be ready for college visits and such.
  18. I did receive a score report, but hesitate to compare her to the national norm, as I usually feel the national norm is dumbed down. So, wanted to compare her score to other homeschoolers. Thanks for the quick responses.
  19. My dd15 (10th grade) took the ACT for the first time in December with no prep (did not take the writing portion). Her section scores were all 30 or 31 except math at 25. Her composite score was 29. She told me right away that she didn't remember a bunch of geometry and that her score would probably be low. How does this compare to others? I intend for her to take the test at least once more, with significant math prep. Does this sound like a good idea? THX
  20. We're doing TOG Yr 2 Unit 1 with both a dialectic (11) and rhetoric (15) student. We just started TOG last year with Yr 1.
  21. :iagree:we've used these several times with good success. couldn't get much less expensive
  22. have you heard the song "Boris the Spider" by the Who?
  23. I agree, the crockpot is your friend. When we did remodeling I wasn't totally banned from the kitchen, just usually in the next room on a table or some such. I could usually still access the oven and microwave, and used a large plastic bin for water. It worked, just not convenient. Just the anticipation of that new kitchen should make the inconvenience worth it!:001_smile:
  24. this is the scale I've used for a long time. Based of the local public school and my early ABeka teaching materials A 100-94 B 93-86 C 85-77 D 76-70 F below 70
