It seems to me that back in the day stores were properly staffed so you weren’t already either checking yourself out or waiting an hour to get to the single cashier on staff (Walmart). We re-read the Ramona Quimby books last month. I think the first book came out in 1949. In one of them Ramona’s dad lost his job and took another job he didn’t like but paid well. As a bag boy at a supermarket. His only complaint was grumpy customers complaining about price increases. We, too, have a holiday picture with an ex-sleazebag-boyfriend in it. We have no pictures of that holiday without him. In my son's wife's family (humongous extended network of aunts and uncles and cousins) they pre-emptively made a rule eons ago that no romantic interests are allowed in any family pictures until there is a ring on the finger.
