Having now read it, I’m glad I had the link to the feminist interpretations because I absolutely did not read it that way. A horror story, absolutely. At first I thought she probably had some sort of autoimmune condition going on, because she was sick and easily exhausted but the two doctors in her lives dismissed it as nerves.
