mom31257
I was looking for grocery stores near our hotel in DC, and Safeway is fairly close. I was looking at their website and noticed "Club prices" in the ad. Is this a store you have to join or pay a fee to shop and get the best prices? We'll be eating breakfast in the room, so I thought I might wait and buy some things for the fridge when we get there because we're traveling overnight to get there. UncleEJ
No, you don't have to pay! It's just a free card you sign up for. Similar to other grocery stores, like Kroger.
Xuzi
No, the card gets you access to discounts on some items (no card, no discount), but anyone can shop there.
vonfirmath
If you have a Randall's card, it's the same store and will work there. They have different names in different parts of the US.
KungFuPanda
Use Jenny. Local area code + 867-5309. It's always worked for me. Even at Safeway. If you're too young to know the song, here is your daily ear worm.
gardenmom5
safeway is a regular grocery store chain. you can sign up for free at the cash register, and will get a 'club card' which tracks your purchases, will eventually give you a discount (maybe. sometimes, at the safeway gas pump) and allows you to buy items at "club" prices instead of full price off the grocery shelves. I've had one for years.
marbel
I've found that without the club card, Safeway is very expensive. So, either get a card or ask the cashier to run the store card so you can get the best prices.
ajfries
Safeway is the only grocery store in our small town & the prices without the club card are....awful. I did notice, though, that prices on things like milk & butter are cheaper than those of Walmart.

When I lived in Bellevue, WA, Safeway was the "cheap" store we went to!
Valley Girl
Some stores (not all) may also let you sign up anonymously or just give you the card without collecting any information. You don't get extra customized coupons sent to you or anything, but you can at least get the sale prices. It never hurts to ask.
PrincessMommy
Use Jenny. Local area code + 867-5309. It's always worked for me. Even at Safeway. I've lived in The Bellevue area most of my life and it has always been one of the cheaper stores. I thought the rest of the hive was crazy, or I was moving somewhere else that had dirt cheap grocery stores. LOL.
milovany
Even WITH the club card, Safeway can still be expensive in my experience. I bet someone has the 867-5309 phone number and scores big on the gas station per gallon deductions LOL.
vonfirmath
Phew, glad to hear you say that. I've lived in The Bellevue area most of my life and it has always been one of the cheaper stores. I thought the rest of the hive was crazy, or I was moving somewhere else that had dirt cheap grocery stores. LOL. I'm not sure if the thing is that the prices at Safeway in WA are cheaper or that the prices EVERYWHERE else are just more expensive and we have more low cost choices here. The Randall's was the closest grocery store when we moved here so it took me a good 4 months or so of continuing to use it primary before I walked into a HEB and discovered how much farther my grocery dollars went. fdrinca
Safeway runs the Just 4U specials, which are worth checking into. Not if you're going to use it for a week, but if you're a regular user they definitely offer great additional deals (on top of club specials and coupons). KungFuPanda
For the OP: If you are coming from a non-Trader Joes town, and have felt left out of the conversations here, there seems to be a couple in DC :-D
bettyandbob
I hate that I have to give out personal information and have my spending habits tracked to get discounts. I seriously thinking about Jenny. I wonder what her spending record looks like.
