Staceyshoe
Our old vacuum has been held together with duct tape for 3+ years, and we are *finally* in the market for a new one. A canister seems easier because we have carpeted stairs in our home. Any recommendations for a good, easy-to-use vacuum?
mom2samlibby
I love my dyson, but shark is another I hear mentioned a lot.
monstermama
Love our Miele! It's pricey, but it's so much easier to use than our old Dyson and it works so much better. My toddler is even able to vacuum certain areas by himself! I thought I'd hate not having a bagless, but it's easy to tell when the bag's full and even with vacuuming every other day (with cats and the crumb dropping toddler) we maybe go through a bag every 2 or 3 months. snickerplum
I really like our Shark! We have the Navigator Pro, so I don't know much about other models. If it broke I'd buy the same kind.
Ellie
If you get a canister vac, you'll need one with a special attachment for the carpet. I have an Electrolux canister that I'm happy with. (I also have an upright which I keep upstairs, because all the upstairs is carpeted.)
kewb
My electrolux is still going at 23 years old. Although I think they are aerus now and I have no idea of quality. If I was in the market now I would be looking at a Miele or am Oreck.
Elisabet1
Brissell. I hate our Dyson.

knittingmomof3
Another vote for Miele! Mine is almost 8 years old and still going strong. I love it.
Tap
My first Riccar is upstairs and is still going strong after 18 years. It has a broken screw in the base plate, so it now is held on by duct tape. I saved it for ds when he moves out. LOL My new Riccar/Simpliciy has a kit with an extra long hose to make cleaning the stairs easier. I love it and it works just as great as my first one from almost 20 years ago! When you compare brands also compare bags and filters and repair costs. The Miele is a great vacuum but the supplies are also quite expensive. I talked to a repair person who fixes both and he recommended Riccar/Simplicity over the Miele.

Mom2pandc
I threw my Dyson in the trash. Hated it. It had pieces falling off and it was scratching my hardwoods. I bought the shark rotator. I love that it lifts away to do stairs. I love the rolling cart with hardwood floor head (no beater bar). I love the upright option for the few rugs and carpets we have. The true test was the high pile almost shaggy rug I have from ikea. Dyson pulled the dirt to the top. Meaning you could see the dirt more because it bounced to the top of the carpet fibers. And the dog hair was left in place. The shark made it look like a new rug. I had almost decided to get rid of the rug, I'm so glad I didn't now!! bibiche
Miele. I would buy it again in a heartbeat (though I don't have to because it is still under its 7 year warranty).
PrincessMommy
We have this one: http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-MC-CG902-Canister-Vacuum-Cleaner/dp/B003AM711G/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1413986158&sr=8-3&keywords=panasonic+vacuum+cleaner and I like it. It got the attachements for doing carpets, hardwood, floors. etc. FWIW, one thing I did, because it's hard to take a reg. sized vacuum on the stairs, is I bought a hand-held for doing both sets of stairs: http://www.amazon.com/Eureka-EasyClean-Corded-Hand-Held-71B/dp/B0006HUYGM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1413986275&sr=8-2&keywords=small+vacuum+cleaner I don't have animals so I only do the stairs about 2x per month anyway. It's not that big of a deal to have a separate cleaners. My 13yr old is able to handle this on the stairs far better than a reg. sized vacuum. Stratford
We have Shark Rotator and it's been great. It has the lift-away feature for doing the stairs, easy enough that my kids can handle it. It works well on hard floors, carpet, and area rugs (we have all kinds of floors in our house.) I've been extremely happy with it, particularly since it was so reasonably priced. I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

Of course, I've never faced a repair bill either, so I have no idea what that would cost.

momto3innc
I've had the Dyson canister for five years and have had no issues...works great! I have carpet, wood, and a tiny bit of laminate.
Wildiris
I've owned a Miele and would not buy again. I own a Kirby- a solid machine that has long attachments, but I recently bought a Shark for work and it is a good, cheap, little machine. It has a canister. I am leary of all the plastic, but it works as well as the Kirby.
Colleen
One word: Miele. I've had twenty years of positive experience with Miele vacuums. Immer besser. ;-)
