  1. I thought some of you would enjoy this: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1889737326/monkess-the-homunculus You can see and hear the whole book in the video.
  2. Once when we were kids, my family was driving trying to find a Marie Callender's restaurant. Dad said to look for it out the left side of the car. My little sister asked how he knew it would be on the left. He told her they always build Marie Callender's restaurants on the left side of the street. She completely bought it until we all started laughing at her. To this day she hasn't lived it down!
  3. Take all my likes! It's so nice to see a fellow linguist and Language Log reader here speaking out against prescriptivist poppycock. Don't get jealous, composr.
  4. Keebler Coconut Dreams and Keebler Grasshoppers! (Knock-off Samoas and Thin Mints)
  5. I used to take Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner from San Juan Capistrano to Solana Beach when I was in college. It was always fun!
  6. In that case, you should enjoy this: http://www.lel.ed.ac.uk/~gpullum/punctfree.pdf
  7. I know a mom who sometimes makes her kids sandwiches for lunch, then makes herself French toast.
  8. This, but with "France" instead of "Germany"! Though when I'm talking to Amuricans, I tend to say Nut-ella instead. There is definitely confusion abounding here due to some of our dialects having yod-dropping in the word "new" while others do not.
  9. My daughter is 5 and has cystic fibrosis. She says she wants to be a pilot when she grows up, so recently when we flew to see the ILs we talked to our pilot and he let her sit in the cockpit. After we arrived I was telling the story (DD was in the room playing) and my MIL said, "She can't really do that, right?" I was like, "Um, what?" "Be a pilot, I mean. Because of her CF?" I just said, "I don't see why not" and hoped DD wasn't listening. But seriously?? She's 5! First of all, the likelihood that she'll really still want to be a pilot when she gets older is small. Second, even though yes, there's a chance her CF could limit her choice of profession someday, does she really need to come to terms with that AT AGE 5??? It really does feel better to get that out. MIL is generally a sweet lady but sometimes she speaks before she thinks.
  10. My parents always set up a "wrapping station" on a folding table in the living room, with all the wrapping supplies on it. My mom would box gifts and put sticky notes on them saying who they were for. Then anyone who had some time could put on a Christmas movie and wrap some gifts while they watched.
  11. I did get one this year for the $70, and this is exactly what I did with it... it is in my sock drawer!
  12. I almost could have written this. It drives me crazy when my DH tells me he's leaving, then an hour later when I'm wondering where he is, he texts again to say that now he's REALLY leaving. Usually someone stops him to talk about something as he's walking out. I would think it would be pretty easy to shoot me a quick text to let me know he has to talk to so-and-so before he leaves. Or tell so-and-so that he needs to get home and they can talk about it tomorrow. I complained about it enough times that now he usually doesn't text or call until he's actually IN the car.
  13. Me too. I remember crying my eyes out the first time I read it. I think I was 11.
