Laurel-in-CA
I know my mom went thru a year of very serious depression after she was diagnosed. It's a hard thing to deal with.

Crimson Wife
I had heard speculation the other day that he might've had a terminal illness like cancer, so I have to say that this saddens but does not surprise me. May God have mercy on his soul and help his loved ones get through this very rough time.
maize
I was just reading that Parkinson's involves the degeneration of dopamine-producing cells in the brain. Since dopamine is one of the neurotransmitters that is involved in depression, it seems to me that Parkinson's itself might cause severe depression. maize
Here is one study that explored the link between Parkinson's and depression. Uff Da!
Parkinson's also causes loss of impulse control so he may have felt suicidal and moved forward on almost a whim.
MelAR05
So sad. :( The mental pain he faced was just too much. It breaks my heart.
Chris in VA
We were at the movies yesterday, and the first preview was for Night at The Museum 3. Almost cried. I'm so sorry to hear he had Parkinson's, along with his other problems/illnesses.
trulycrabby
Parkinson's also causes loss of impulse control so he may have felt suicidal and moved forward on almost a whim. It's the medications that may cause loss of impulse control, not the disease itself:http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2924724/

One quote: "The rate of severe depression is twice that seen in other equivalently disabled patients " http://brain.oxfordjournals.org/content/128/6/1314.long This is interesting. I wonder how many people who have depression, then are years later diagnosed with Parkinson's, suffered from the depression because they actually had Parkinson's. Am I making sense? I guess I am wondering how many of today's depression cases are really the very first stage of Parkinson's. Or, is long term, undiagnosed/untreated depression something that makes one susceptible to Parkinson's. Just musing.

I have read study summaries indicating that people with depression have a significantly increased risk of later developing Parkinson's, so it may in at least some cases all be part of the same neurological problem, just manifesting at different stages. Katy
I'm so glad his wife released that information. I was having such a hard time understanding before. I think the first 3-6 months of being diagnosed with something like that are very dangerous.
Angie in VA
Just today I wondered if there was something else going on. Not that depression is nothing, but I just wondered if there was something more. So sad.
