Chris in VA
So, Dh has asked that I donate to charity for him this year (as I did last year) for the majority of his Xmas presents. Last year I "bought" a lot at Gospel for Asia. I'd like to spread the love. Dh is a priest, has a heart for the Palestinians, loves music (writes and plays guitar), supports the persecuted church. Any ideas? I donate then print out pictures from the website and wrap the pictures. I am going to support our local food bank/shelter already. KarenNC
I like programs that expand beyond the original donation Heifer Project (provide animals and training to help families and individuals become self-sustaining, they are required to pass along at least one offspring of their animals to another family which also gets training) Kiva (microloan program, you make a microloan--say $25, even, which can be combined with other donors for the full needed loan amount--then you get progress reports on the recipient, who pays back the loan to Kiva, which goes into your account so that you can make another loan, donate it to Kiva or withdraw it to use for some other purpose) www.kiva.org The website shows 107 loan opportunities in Palestine

Luckymama
I second the kiva idea. That would be the perfect gift if my parents were still living.

ElizabethB
Our pastor at our last church has a friend from school who works at Central India Christian Mission, they do good work and his friend preached at out church yearly when he returned home to visit family. Last year's sermon, he talked about some of the persecution they face and how hiring security guards for their doctors greatly increased the number of patients they could treat. It was very interesting. They have planted 1,000 churches over the last 30 years and they are all still going strong. http://indiamission.org/
ElizabethB
I just found his sermon...very powerful, he was preaching on Matthew 5:10 -12 10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. http://cornerstoneshiloh.org/blog/2013/06/04/crazy-8-june-1-2/ Even if you don't choose this one, the video of the sermon is worth watching. I am thinking Kiva and will look into Hagar--we have direct experience with Seeds for Peace; I forgot about them until y'all sparked a memory. milovany
The International Orthodox Christian Charities is working among the persecuted church in the Middle East, including Syria (where quite a lot of persecution against Christians has been happening lately -- nuns and bishops have been kidnapped, churches destroyed, Christians killed .... ). Chris in VA
Oh, thank you! Dh visited the Sinai and St. Catherine's the first time he went to the Holy Land and it was one of his most favorite places. We have great fondness for the Bedouin aftee our time in Wadi Rum. This will be great! Here's an interesting option...http://www.saintcatherinefoundation.org/en/news/world-press-reports-on-plight-of-saint-catherines-monastery-and-/ The reason I thought of it for you is that it supports persecuted Christians, who are part of a local non-Christian economy, and it might be an interesting way to remember your trip to the Middle East this year. The supporting stories about the September shutdown are easily Googlable, and describe the rolling impact of the persecution...how it affects everyone. Incognito
I recently read an article about which gifts give the most "bang for their buck". I don't recall the exact order, but the top few were giving: water de-worming mosquito nets So, I suggest giving in those areas.
