Onceuponatime
What are your favorites. We always watch Arsenic and Old Lace in October. Some others we have enjoyed: The Ghost and Mr. Chicken Blackbeard's Ghost What about your family (ages 10 and up) ? What do you all like to watch together? Nothing gory please. Preferrably on the silly side.
Mothersweets
Has your family seen The Canterville Ghost (1944)?
Slartibartfast
Murder He Says with Fred MacMurry was a favorite of ours when we were young. It is hilarious.
Twigs
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir Wizard of Oz (you know - flying monkeys!) not for the kiddos, but Dead Again
Slartibartfast
There are some Abbott and Costello movies that involve various horror monsters. (Frankenstein, Mummy, Dr Jeckel and Mr Hyde, and others) Those should be fine for kids

DragonFaerie
We like a lot of the Disney and Disney-type Halloween movies: Hocus Pocus the Halloweentown series The Boy Who Cried Werewolf Girl vs. Monster My Babysitter is a Vampire The Nighmare Before Christmas Coraline Hotel Transylvania
Jeannie in NJ
trying to remember if Beetlejuice would be ok for kids. I think it would (have not seen it in years) but you might want to check it out. Stars Michael Keaton also a quite young Winona Ryder and a slim Alec Baldwin
MelAR05
My kids are younger but we really like Hotel Transylvania. We do not normally buy movies but we bought this one.
Word Nerd
Coraline is spooky. My all-time favorite monster movie (though not necessarily family friendly) is Young Frankenstein. Frau Blücher!
Delirium
All of us enjoy a lot of what's already said, but I didn't see the Mad, Mad Monster Party claymation mentioned.
KrissiK
I was just going to suggest Arsenic and Old Lace. I'm not too in to spooky movies, but I love that one. I love Carey Grant and Peter Lorre.
Chris in VA
The original (or, Bela Lugosi, anyway) Dracula is pretty scary, but it's black and white and old enough (i.e., slightly cheesy) that it's not too intense for kiddos, IMO. sparrow
What? What? You're talking about spooky movies and there's no mention of Vincent Price? If you happen to have cable, and your cable coverage includes Turner Classics, you can choose from 35 Vincent Price movies this month: http://www.tcm.com/this-month/article/650759|0/Vincent-Price-Thursdays-in-October.html I have always loved Vincent Price...he was my first introduction to "scary" movies as a kid. Mom in High Heels
Hocus Pocus! We watch this every Halloween. It's our favorite Halloween tradition. Just know there is a comment about a virgin, but it's brief.

Jilly
We like to watch From Time to Time which is based on the book The Treasure of Green Knowe. It is a great ghost story for kids.
Guest
The Ghost and Mr. Chicken Aw! I love this movie, I used to watch it with my mom as a kid. I don't know any other spooky movies, because I am a scaredy-cat!
readinmom
Any of the Abbott and Costello meets...(Dracula, Frankenstein, etc.) Monster House Haunted Mansion Spooky Buddies The Witches It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown Watcher in the Woods Gremlins One that I really like is Lady in White. There are a few scenes that may be too intense for younger kids, but overall story is good. We're Walking Dead fans, so our taste in horror movies is more than G rated. Cafdog
The Disney cartoon of "Ichabod" is a favorite. The Headless Horseman still creeps me out!
nmoira
Depends on the age of the kids. I remember a lot of lewd and highly sexual remarks in the movie. It's not that bad. There's a brief shot of a model railway sized whorehouse with Beetlejuice out front. Some of the characters in the waiting room might be too much for very sensitive kids. I let my (then) 10yo see it. I'll never be able to see it again without seeing Robin Thicke though... darn you, Internet meme.

J-rap
It's not one of our favorite scary movies, but it hasn't been mentioned yet: the original Frankenstein. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0021884/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2 It's pretty creepy, but it's so old (1935) that you don't take it seriously. I do prefer "scary" ones with a little humor, myself.
