gingersmom
:ack2: Its not that much more expensive to buy it fresher than 13 years old.
Alte Veste Academy
LOL My gut made this face --> :ack2: and then I had to drink a whole cup of water to clear away the taste of the imaginary rancid wheat. ;) :tongue_smilie:

justasque
Yes or no gut says yes it will be fine. That's whole wheat, yes? It will likely be rancid and inedible. You don't know how it was kept - too hot, too cold, opened and resealed, etc. Not worth it. Edited September 23, 2012 by askPauline
Munchkins_mama
If it's a sealed #10 can of wheat berries than it would be just fine. If it's ground, then no way. Wheat berries last pretty much forever.
KatieJ
I have heard and read that wheat kept in a sealed container will last for 25 years. If I knew the history of how, where, under what conditions that wheat had been stored, I might consider it. However, since you don't, I wouldn't buy it. FloridaLisa
Ahhh. . . Y2K wheat. :D If it's truly sealed wheat berries, I would think it's fine. I wouldn't buy if it's not sealed, without knowing the source.
LisaKinVA
sealed wheat berries would be fine...unsealed, I wouldn't touch them.
In the Rain
I didn't know Goodwill sold food. For optimum nutrition, I'd use fresh wheat berries, IMHO.
*Michelle*
It should be fine. http://www.homefoodstorage.com/wheat.shtml?utm_source=REFERENCES_R7&LS-2659 Regardless of which one you choose to store, make sure you only store it in the actual kernel. You don't want to buy it for long term storage if it's already ground into flour. (So you will need to purchase a flour mill yourself). In the flour form it begins almost immediately to lose its nutrients. However when it remains as a kernel (or it's also called a wheat berry) it retains nutrients for almost 20-30 years, when properly stored. You will want to store the wheat kernels in either #10 food grade enamel lined cans, or in food grade buckets lined with a special lining. This will ensure it stores for the longest length of time and will keep bugs from getting into the food.
mellifera33
It's the proper storage question that would bother me--you don't know if it's been baking in a 115 degree attic every summer for the last 13 years.
DawnM
sealed whole berries.....I would be fine with it. Dawn
Blueridge
I remember archaeologists discovering kernels of kamut wheat in an ancient Egyptian tomb and planting them...and they grew strong and healthy, and were cultivated into a new wheat crop for the modern world. :)

FO4UR
Sealed wheat berries? I would buy it, open it, inspect...and use it if I did not see any obvious issues.
Hilltop
I wouldn't take the risk... You don't know how it was stored.
Prairie~Phlox
Well I bought it, it was two buckets sealed hard red wheat berries, 45 lbs in each bucket. Honestly my friend gave me wheat berries that they had sitting in their pole barn of all places and I am just now finishing it up and it was also from y2k. This was probably 2 years ago. If they aren't any good, I'm only out 8$. I was getting ready to buy 25#'s for $27 on amazon.
beaners
I would have bought it too. I would hope it was still good, but at that price, it would still be a decent deal just to feed it to my chickens.
MomsintheGarden
I would have risked it, too. You might want to try sprouting a little of it to see if it germinates.

teeniebeenie6
I wouldn't eat it. What if it was sitting in a hot garage for the the last 13 years. :ack2:

What if it was sitting in a hot garage for the the last 13 years. :ack2: Like I said, I had the exact same wheat from a friend and it sat in their polebarn. Not much difference Imo. I don't have a lot of extra money, if it tastes fine, I will use it. Egyptians used to store it in a hot temple. Everyone has to do what they gotta do to provide for their families.
