Carol in Cal.
Obscure hymn category: Oh Rejoice ye Christians Loudly. Or Praise God the Lord Ye Sons of Men. Secular: Donny Hathaway's "This Christmas" Movie song: White Christmas Choral: And the Glory of the Lord from Handel's Messiah Well known hymn category: hard to pick, but either Silent Night or Joy to the World. Or Oh Come All Ye Faithful Secular but not: I Heard the Bells (God Is Not Dead Nor Doth He Sleep!) Advent: Wake, Awake, for Night is Flying. Close seconds: Oh Lord How Shall I Meet Thee?, and Lift Up Your Heads Ye Mighty Gates. In the CoWo category, My Deliverer. But I generally don't find CoWO to have much substance. Ones I cannot STAND: Secular: Have yourself a merry little Christmas (so depressing!) Hymnish: Go tell it on the mountain Way way secular: Santa baby Edited November 29, 2011 by Carol in Cal. amydavis
I have WAY too many, but here's a starter list, in no particular order...although Josh's voice is like butter...;) Josh Groban's version of "O Holy Night" (His voice is so beautiful.) John Lennon's "Happy Xmas" (Huge Beatles' fan, so this is a must.) Paul McCartney's (w/Wings) "Wonderful Christmas Time" (My fave Beatle!) Nat King Cole's version of "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting)" (A classic...) Bing Crosby's (w/ The Andrews Sisters) version of "Jingle Bells" (This version is my fave; I love the ladies' part - it's so upbeat!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKY29YW3erc Bing Crosby & David Bowie's version of "Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth" Andy Williams' version of "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" (A classic version...) If you have a sense of humor, you'll enjoy these variations on a theme! The 12 Pains of Christmas (Funny!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYPCo2rF_V8 Straight No Chaser's "12 Days " (This is SO good, a must watch!) Okay, and last, here is one that pokes fun at dysfunctional families that still love one another and enjoy their Christmas together, LOL. Warning, do not watch if you don't have an excellent sense of humor... Robert Earl Keene's "Merry Christmas from the Family"
BarbecueMom
Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLachlin - "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" Muppets "12 Days of Christmas" (ok, pretty much the entire John Denver and the Muppets album...) Straight no Chaser "12 Days of Christmas" and "Christmas Can-Can" Third Day "Do You Hear What I Hear?" "Sleigh Ride" - the original Boston Pops recording (heard a version yesterday without the trumpet horse whinny at the end - almost ruined my holiday season) BNL and Michael Buble - "Elf's Lament" ... and (don't shoot) the version of O Holy Night sung by Cartman from South Park. He keeps forgetting the words, and every time he messes up, Kyle zaps him with a stun gun. It makes me laugh because I love that song, but I couldn't remember the words to save my life!
