smilesonly Posted November 9, 2011 Author Share Posted November 9, 2011 well, to sum it up, i am done with p*rn in the library. two *recent* situations that have put me over the top.... yesterday a teenage girl had to wait for a computer. the only one available was unfiltered. the guy refused to get off of it when his time was up and made a scene. the librarian didn't want to upset the other patrons, so agreed to another 15 min time slot! the girl left the building crying after a heated conversation with the guy. i got in a shouting match with the head librarian, telling her she should call the cops. nope. i feel like *i* should have called the cops. a regular p*rn viewer has developed a habit. he reserves a computer for two different time slots. he gets on the computer, views the garbage, then heads to the bathroom. he waits about 30-45 mins, hanging out reading magazines, then heads back to the computer for more viewing. he then goes to the bathroom before he leaves the building. ewww. the library director just says there is nothing he can do. he admits his hands are tied due to the ala. NONE of the female librarians feel safe. NONE of them think p*rn should be viewed in the same building kids are in. i've just had enough. i've seen too much and heard too much. i walked in and said it was an unstable working environment and i quit. period. i'm not going to say anymore as i get upset just thinking about it. i think the future will be adult libraries and under 18 libraries.:angry::( Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

In my old city, none of the librarians were friendly. But it was a large city, and it was not unusual to have intimidating people hanging out for hours around the book drop, among other things. We have moved to a small town about a half hour away from the previous city, and wow, what a world of difference at the library. The town is a fraction of the size of the city, but the book collection is awesome. And even better -- the librarians are friendly, helpful and seem to enjoy their job. I was so surprised when one offered to walk with me around the children's section, helping to select books for my DC. That would never have happened at my old library. It's a small, conservative town and a small, conservative library. I abhor the ALA; they're right up there with the NEA. Heh. Our library is absolutely wonderful and I think it's largely because it's a large, liberal library in a smallish liberal town. I know that I'm not alone in thinking that our library is so fantastic; it has won numerous awards and I often hear people who have moved away talk about how much they miss it. Different strokes, eh? But I also happen to support the NEA. I don't know enough about the ALA to have an opinion, but I can't really imagine that any association relating to libraries are all that evil. They're librarians for crying out loud, not an association of criminal masterminds. :tongue_smilie: I can't imagine a single librarian here feeling the least bit endangered or unsafe. That is horrifying. If the library administration is going to allow patrons to view porn in the library, then they're going to have to crack down on the staff to crack down on the patrons using it, as well as any other problem patrons. Their response is unacceptable. Some male staff member should be following that guy into the bathroom every single time until they embarrass him out of there or catch him doing something and eject him. Just the last time I went there I saw there was a security guard in the main checkout area (in the area where the library staff is) watching. I assume it is because of problems that are occupying. I haven't observed any when I have been there but I am there maybe for a half hour or up to one hour a week. No more than that so I don't doubt that issues could be happening that I never see.
