Fun things your little ones want to "be" when they grow up...

Recommended Posts

My son is doing what he wants to do - carpenter. My oldest dd wants to be a SAHM so she is also doing what she wants. The 18 year old would like to own her own bookstore. The 17 year old is looking for a career that does not require her to leave the house or interact with any people, oh and it has to pay very well. I am stearing her in the direction of computer programmer or consultant. The 13 year old want to get an athletic scholarship to go to college and become a vet. The youngest is leaning towards artist. All of them would like to be rich though.

My DS used to want to be a "billboard putter-upperer". He thought it would be the coolest job in the world.

Just the other day he came and told me that he wants to be a Detective Preacher. He wants to travel the world to solve crimes, and while he's there, preach sermons and see people saved. Atleast I know he's enjoying the Sherlock Holmes books that we read. :001_smile:

Well I just asked my almost five year old "What do you want to be when you grow up?"

And he said, "one of the Jonas brothers."

Huh? That was random LOL. I said "Why did you say that?"

He said "They're not real, they're only on TV."

I said, "So what else do you want to be?"

He said, "You can't be two things! What, you don't want me to be one of the Jonas Brothers? Nothing, I don't want a job."

Gee. I hope he gets a bit more motivated when he gets older. LOL.

(oh, wait, he just said: "I want a painting job. That's what I want!")

ETA: My daughter at nearly 10 has been saying since she was in Kindergarten that she wants to be a tattoo artist and work with her dad. But sometimes, back then, she would say things like: "I'm going to be a tattoo artist on Mondays, a waitress on Tuesdays, a dentist on Wednesdays, a teacher on Thursdays...."

Once, my daughter, who was 4 at the time said "When I grow up, I want to be a snowman." She is 19 now.

Another daughter who was also 4 at the time announced one night at the dinner table "When I grow up, I am going to be the best soccer player ever. Oh, and I am going to have 16 kids. 8 girls and 8 boys." Nobody in our family had ever played soccer at the time, so we didn't have any idea where that thought came from, so it was pretty funny. I had to sign her up to play soccer after that. I didn't want to be responsible for her not accomplishing her lifelong goals. ;) That daughter is 12 now and loves all things sports.

Well my 7yo son informed me that he is going to be a police officer and his brother is going to be a fireman! I will be taking Xanax early I guess...

My girls want to be mommies and artist and bakers and cake decorators.

Of course we have been watching Cake Boss and now my kids are thinking they will just open their own bakery...

  • 4 weeks later...

I had to revive this thread today because dd came up with two crazy aspirations in one morning. When she grows up she now wants to be either:

1) a homeless man who wanders the streets with a capybara she plans to steal from the zoo

or

2) the owner of a restaurant from which take out orders are delivered via broomstick; she wants to make the deliveries, of course

Today in PDG's class**, the children were asked to share what they wanted to be when they grew up.

Most kids gave some pretty fun answers (mermaid, a "worker" on that crazy TV show "Wipeout", a warrior, a queen)...then PDG said she wanted to be a... TIME LORD!! :smilielol5: The other children had no idea what she was talking about. (I think this may be a sign we've been watching too much Doctor Who at our home lately.)

What interesting vocational aspirations have your little ones voiced?

**PDG is in public first grade...not sure how much longer this will last. DH actually conceded last night that we WILL be homeschooling 2nd, for sure; however, I'm still holding out hope to finish first grade at home.

When I grow up I want Jill's job on Wipeout. Seriously--I can't think of a better job. You get to stand around, watch people wipe out, and make sarcastic comments. It's my dream job :001_wub:!

My son has changed his mind over the years. At this point it's still gelling, but I'm sure it will involve talking a lot, whatever he does.

At age 7 he wanted to flight fighter jets and land on aircraft carriers. After catching my breath I told him he COULD do that if he wanted.

At age 9 he wanted to make Star Wars 7, 8, & 9. If George Lucas wouldn't do it, he would start. He started storyboards and watched hours of behind the scenes footage. (that goal hasn't died yet)

At an earlier age I think he wanted to be either Emeril or Alton Brown.

At 10 he wanted to be a poker player. He watched the poker game scene from Casino Royale a hundred thousand times. He has it memorized. He watched WSOP for hours and hours.

At 12 he started making stop motion movies, he's still working on that.

I run scenarios through my head once in a while of what those might look like all merged together. It usually looks like a world class poker player who makes movies and knows how to cook a really good meal. Oh, and he probably will always talk a lot.

ER was, of course, obsessed with Thomas the Tank Engine, and he wanted to be a useful engine just like Thomas. EK didn't want to be like Barbie; she wanted to be Barbie. Once when she was about 3, we went to a restaurant, and another diner commented about EK, "Oh, look! A little Barbie!" That made EK's day!

When our second ds, now twelve, was three he announced to a Marine that when he group up he wanted to be, "A British Soldier". I won't describe for you the look on the young man's face. Needless to say, and I quote, "Ma'am, meaning no disrespect, but you need to straighten him out."

He outgrew this fascination, apparently it was the red coats of the Revolutionary War soldiers, that was attracting him! Red is still his favorite color.

Ds 10 wants to have a llama farm, teach mathematics in college, and work as a physicist. I am not certain how he will reconcile all of that but I am encouraging!
