Christi/NC
My dh got a thing through Blockbuster that works like Netflix and now I can have lots and lots of fantastic movies coming my way with the click of a button! I really enjoy foreign flicks or independant films but I'm not opposed to any suggestions. I have seen most if not all Jane Austen productions. I do love BBC productions too and own quite a few. If you have favorites would you please post them for me? Thanks so much! Christi
Lakeside
We just watched After the Wedding last night. I believe it is a Danish film. We had seen a preview for it and thought it looked interesting, so we added it to the Netflix queue awhile ago. DH and I both enjoyed it. Michelle in MO
Life is Beautiful Das Boot Sophie Scholl: Die Letzten Tage I tend to gravitate towards WWII/Holocaust-type films. If I can think of any others, I'll add on.
Alice
The Namesake is very good. (Based on a novel by Jhumpa Lahiri....not sure if I'm spelling that right) Once is very very very good. Not really an Indie film but I really enjoyed Dan in Real Life(with Steve Carrell, I haven't seen a lot of other things with him but this is apparently not his typical role)

StacyWithFourRugrats
I love the following for many different reasons. Warning in advance: many of the Asian films are more "adult" in nature. Bollywood musical Bride and Prejudice Once most Korean Dramas, especially Winter Sonata (aka Winter Love Song), My Lovely Sam-Soon and Coffee Prince - tho you probably can not get these through Netflix. Farewell My Concubine Raising the Red Lantern 2046 Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Curse of the Golden Flower Memoirs of a Geisha The Executioners Wing Chun Musa the Warrior House of Flying Daggers The Returner The next three are part of a South Korean trilogy with an warning of violence and somewhat disturbing elements. They are excellent movies though. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance Oldboy Sympathy for Lady Vengeance add to that an "interesting and bloody" film Battle Royale (hard to find in the US due to the nature of the film) A couple of darker, Russian films that are part of a trilogy, but very good: Nightwatch Daywatch Ok, so you don't think I am too weird in my choices of films, there are also the French Three Colors Trilogy: Blue White Red And for the children, any and all of the Hayao Miyazaki movies: Kiki's Delivery Service (my personal favorite) Howl's Moving Castle Castle in the Sky My Neighbor Totoro Princess Mononoke Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind Spirited Away Ok, I will stop there ;) I lied. Silly me did not do ANY British classics: Death at a Funeral (recent and HILARIOUS film) Shaun of the Dead Hot Fuzz Jeeves and Wooster series Black Adder Fawlty Towers Red Dwarf series (dh likes it and I will admit, at times, it is funny)
lovemyboys
Il Postino is good too. Also the Italian/Greek movie from WWII era about soldiers landing on an island and not having much to do, I can't think of the name. It was funny.
Karen sn
I've not seen many foreign films but I love "Babbette's Feast." Second that! ADD: Like Water for Chocholate and Il Postino.
percytruffle
I second Ushpizin, Babette's Feast, and Waking Ned Devine. They are some of our favorite movies. Be aware that Amelie has nudity in it. But, if that sort of thing doesn't bother you ;) check out House of Sand. Fantastic movie, but one really intense scene (if you know what I mean). kalanamak
I loved watching it because my great grandmother came over around then. City of Lost Children Dodeska'den ("I am a Train") The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser Aguirre the Wrath of God (about settling South America) The original Lady Killers
Christi/NC
I'm going to look for Waking Ned Devine. It's been repeated a couple of times in this thread. Amelie is one of my all time favs. I saw it in the theater twice, I own it now and have rewatched it several times. :-) It's really an amazing film. I do appreciate what the French can do with a camera and some actors--wow! Christi
PariSarah
Gosford Park--what Jane Austen would have written had she lived in the 1920s. Decalage Horaires (Jet Lag is the English title, I think) and Apres Vous are both silly French comedy-romances. Mindless, but fun.
Lisa in Jax
If you like Bollywood (Indian) musicals, you might like: 1. Khabi Kushi Khabi Gham 2. Dil Chahata Hai 3. Koi Mil Gaya Monsoon Wedding and Bend It Like Beckham are also good, though not "Bollywood" movies. Lisa who is now stuck with the theme song from KKKG in my head. Aagh! Mabelen
[/i]The next three are part of a South Korean trilogy with an warning of violence and somewhat disturbing elements. They are excellent movies though. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance Oldboy Sympathy for Lady Vengeance Oh my goodness! I didn't know Oldboy was part of a trilogy. I watched it with dh and I couldn't not go to sleep for hours afterwards! I found it really disturbing and confusing. Maybe watching the first one first would have helped? We also are fans of the British series you mentioned, although we watched them mostly while in the UK. We find Fawlty Towers especially funny because I am Spanish like Manuel (but NOT from Barcelona)!
dangermom
For Indian movies, my very favorites are Swades Veer-Zaara Lagaan I just got Twilight Samurai and am looking forward to it. My mom said it was great, and she's pretty good with Japanese movies. All time favorite film: The Secret of Roan Inish, which is Irish. Yes, it is a trilogy but Oldboy appeared first in the US I believe (I was working in Blockbuster at the time). Lady Vengeance is actually the best IMHO and not as disturbing as Oldboy (you will know what I mean...hehe).
Mabelen
Monsoon Wedding and Bend It Like Beckham are also good, though not "Bollywood" movies. If you liked those you will also like one already mentioned, The Namesake, and an oldie, East is East, along the same lines. We love these. We can relate to a lot of the things in them since my dh is Sri Lankan.
Mabelen
Il Postino is good too. Also the Italian/Greek movie from WWII era about soldiers landing on an island and not having much to do, I can't think of the name. It was funny. I watched the Italian movie about the soldiers stranded in a Greek island. I think it was called "Mediterraneo". I really liked it, but then again I enjoy Italian movies for the language alone. I love Italian!

Audrey
My favourite movie of all time is Tous les matins du monde (All the mornings of the world). Try to find the subtitled, not the dubbed version. It is the story of the French court composer Marin Marais and his teacher. Oh. My! It touches me like no other movie ever has.

JFSinIL
already mentioned most of my favs - I will add, however, one serious dramatic film about Hitler's final days - Downfall. The acting is brilliant, the films looks very authentic, and it is NOT for children. It is from the pov of one of Hitler's secretaries, who later in life either wrote a book about her experiences or someone interviewed her about them - I forget which. Let me repeat - not for children. Also - a Japanese animation also NOT for children: Grave of the Fireflies. Set in Japan right after the bombs fall and the war ends, what happens to two orphaned kids. On an up note - any of the films with J. Tati, like Mr. Hulot's Holiday, or Ealing comedies with Alex Guiness.
