History: we are doing our own thing. Romans (Famous Men); American: Gold Rush, Civil War, Western Expansion

Here is what I did last year:

Bible - Memoria Press Christian Studies III, followed by readings from Bennett's Moral Compass during the last part of the year.

Math - Singapore 6; used some Key to.... series books for extra drill work. Son also was in a once weekly outside algebra class using a Brown, Dolciani book.

Grammar - Abeka C and oral language lessons.

Also worked on some Remedia Publications outlining workbooks during the language arts time block.

Spelling - Spelling Workout H, which was really also a word study by this point....

Writing - Writing Strands 3; did writing from the Abeka Grammar, as well. Also did writing assignments from the outlining workbooks and some writing related to history. Worked on several lapbooks this year, for the first time.

Literature - we had a literary genres workbook that we used once weekly (he did writing related to this, too), as well as discussing the literary works we were reading aloud during the year.

He had time set aside to read alone, too.

We alternated Latin/Greek study on one day with Spanish the next. I used Latin Primer II and the Greek Code Cracker. For Spanish, I used Spanish for Children.

We alternated geography and logic. He did a Beautiful Feet study (and maps) using a Holling book at the beginning of the school year, then worked out of a couple of geography workbooks the rest of the year. For logic, we covered informal fallacies using Thinking Toolbox and Fallacy Detective. All work was done orally.

In the afternoons, we alternated history and science. I put together my own studies for those, using lots of living books. We studied medieval history and earth/space science.

We're finishing up 6th grade with our oldest son. Here is what he did:

Math - Singapore 6A & 6B + ALEKS

History - Finished a two-year American History study using Joy Hakim's

A History of US

Science - Apologia's General Science

Music - Piano

Spanish Class

Language Skills:

Spelling - Spelling Workout F

Vocabulary - Wordly Wise 3

Grammar - Growing with Grammar 6

Online Writing Class (most of the year)

Read his choice of books (he's an avid reader)

Daily Grams

Penmanship practice and Journal a couple times a week each

**For penmanship practice, we used the Living Memory book that was posted about here last summer. We found several items that worked well

with his history that he practiced his penmanship with, such as The Gettysbury Address and the Bill of Rights.

Art (drawing class once a month for three hours) **I wish this was more but it's hard to find around here!**

P.E. (swimming and tennis, weekly)

Thanks for responses - I'm going to read through again more slowly!

Here's what I'm thinking so far:

Math: CLE - finish 500 and get through half or more of 600

History: Diana Waring's RRR

Literature: Middle Ages list from various sources, Logos Upper Grammar Lit Guides (partial), - also have Logos Poetry Primer and Figuratively Speaking mostly for myself right now.

Spelling: SWO E/F

Latin: Latin Prep

Writing: Probably SWB's Logic Stage Writing Lecture suggestions, though I have plenty of other things on hand (I will not tell how I answered Aubrey's poll :D)

Grammar: Either finish CLE LA 500 or jump to "6th grade" in something that doesn't have to be done everyday.

Science: probably Rainbow Science, but I kind of want him to do SL 5 Science this year.

Bible: BSF's Isaiah - and maybe something else?

Art: AO artist study, Artistic Pursuits?

Music: AO Composer study, piano lessons

PE: Summer swim team, maybe homeschool gym/swim

Logic: Art of Argument

Competitive Chess

For 6th grade, we will be doing the following:

TOG

Mostly at Dialectic Level - History/Geography/Literature/Writing YR 1 U4 Ancient Romans through YR 2 U3 Establishment of 13 colonies.

Bible

Calvary Chapel Bible study lessons. Here is the link to free lessons online. (I'm very anxious to get this going. I recently found it through a hs forum recommendation.)

Grammar

We are continuing our EG level 5 that is still in progress. 6th grade grammar is so similar that I see no need to buy another set of books. This is the second time we've stretched one year of grammar over two years, and dd is doing fine. We also do the daily grams.

Spelling

We use SP and will be at Level G when we start 6th grade.

Composition

I will be following TOG assignments and will use their Writing Aids instruction book.

Math

Dd is doing very, very well with TT Math, so we will level up to 7 for sixth grade. We will also supplement with Life of Fred: Decimals & Percents and Life of Fred: Fractions once per week at the recommendation of TWTM.

Science

Dd is part of a general science co-op in our community that is based on A.C.E. curriculum but supplemented with lots and lots of hands on activities by an amazing science teacher. (We are soooo blessed to have this opportunity and my dd LOVES the class.)

Pre-Logic

This is new for 6th grade, and I've never studied logic before. The plan is to follow the recommendation of TWTM by using Mind Benders and Fallacy Detectives four times per week.

Foreign Language

Dd will pick up where we left off with LFC B and complete it during 6th grade. (We started it late and only worked on it 3 x's per week this year, so she is about half-way through the course.) We are also going to begin Power -Glide French 1 this year.

Fine Arts

I am a art teacher at a Classical Christian school, and also teach a private hs group from my studio on Fridays. My daughter will be in this group for 6th grade. This year's focus will be on technique, but it will also include some art history and attention to the seven design elements.

That about sums it up for now. I am in the process of writing a more detailed description of our 6th grade curriculum and studies that will be posted to my blog within a few days.

Blessings,

Lucinda

This year we are blending 2 history years into 1, essentially cutting out concentrated US History and focusing on World History. We will study from 1800—present, incorporating The Story of Canada and using a Canadian Timeline and World Events Timeline where appropriate.

Language Arts ~ Writing Aids from Tapestry of Grace; Vocabulary from Classical Roots: finish both grade 5 & 6 books; Spelling Power; Cozy Grammar and Cozy Punctuation; the odd lesson in Classical Writing: Homer

Science ~ Finish last 2 lessons in RS4K Chemistry Level 1 and reading The Mystery of the Periodic Table. Complete Apologia Young Explorers: Astronomy, along with the corresponding Notebooking Journal; Detective Science by Jim Wiese; God’s Design for Science: following interests throughout the year. Reading scientist biographies in The Story of Science, where applicable in the timeline of History. Many hands-on experiences including animal studies, nature walks, Creation videos, etc.

Bible ~ Tapestry of Grace, Sunday School, AWANA, family devotions, daily reading of the Bible, life. :o) We will be reading Heaven for Kids by Randy Alcorn, and several apologetics books by Lee Strobel, these have been adapted for kids: The Case For Christ, The Case for Faith, and the Case for the Creator.

French ~ First Start French, Book One

Greek ~ utilize a combination of workbooks, Rosetta Stone, family conversation and friendly letter writing

Penmanship ~ A Reason for Handwriting

Logic ~ finish book Building Thinking Skills, Level 2

Music ~ Composer biographies and music appreciation in Tapestry; the study of 3 books with accompanying CDs: Hymns for a Kid’s Heart, Christmas Carols for a Kid’s Heart, and Passion Hymns for a Kid’s Heart. Self directed piano lessons using Meet the Composers curriculum by Madonna Woods.

I'll be outsourcing a few art classes throughout the year.
