  1. I am so glad to hear that a parent-issued diploma will work. Thank you so much for the replies!
  2. It's been a while since I've posted, but I'm wondering if anyone has experience with using the GI Bill for their homeschooled student. My husband has transferred his benefits to our daughter. In some places I've read that completing a high school education in a home school setting approved under state law is sufficient, but in other places I have seen that she must have a recognized equivalent of a high school diploma such as a home-schooled certificate by the state where the student resided during home school (Virginia does not issue anything like this). I have seen the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2012 cited in reference to this requirement. I know I will have to call the VA to confirm, but it would be helpful to me to know how/if others have been able to receive these benefits for their homeschooled students. Is taking the GED the only route? Thanks!!! Caroline
  3. Guess that answers the question of whether or not dd will take AP Spanish next year. It would have been nice if OSU had notified current students about the program's closure. :confused1:
  4. This is for my wanna-be violinist who is an excellent student but does not like fluff and spends the bulk of her day practicing. I've seen American Pageant recommended for AP history, but I'm not sure she'd get through that. Any other secular recommendations? Thanks.
  5. Have you looked at Blue Tent courses? http://teacherweb.com/USA/BlueTent/Thompson/apt27.aspx I enrolled middle dd in Honors English II for the 2013-2014 school year. I'm guessing that there will be more teacher/class interaction than there will be in a K-12 class.
  6. For SAT/PSAT, call the College Board at the number on the page that was linked above. I called and explained that dd is a homeschooled student who needs accomodations, and they sent me forms to return with the report from her neuropsych eval. If the College Board approves accomodations, they will apply to the SAT, the PSAT, SAT subject tests, and AP tests. I don't know anything about the ACT.
  7. We have friends who have been very happy with Mr. G's classes at Currclick. I just looked at the website, and he has a five-star rating with 42 reviews. HTH
  8. Yes, both dds took the LT writing courses before taking a lit course, although only my oldest dd has taken lit with Melodee. Oldest dd took LT High School Comp course in 9th grade, and we worked through about half of Windows to the World at home. The combination prepared her well for the writing in her CT course. I'm sorry I don't know anyone who has taken a Blue Tent course. I was looking for a course that would prepare middle dd to take AP English Comp or Lit, and this seems to fit the bill. It was also important to us that the course be asynchronous because dd is a musician and her lesson and rehearsal schedule varies from week to week. Our few communications with Blue Tent have been positive. Have you looked at Debra Bell's classes? No experience with them, but you might find something there. I think it's called AIM Academy?
  9. We've been extremely happy with Melodee Skiles' literature classes at Captive Thought Tutorials. Melodee leads wonderful discussions. She does not cover grammar or vocab, or the nuts and bolts of writing, at the high school level. She does give excellent guidance and feedback on 5 or 6 response papers and two literary term papers per year in her Brit Lit and American Lit classes. All of my kids have been through Laurel Tree Tutorial writing classes, too, and I highly recommend them. Your dd could always do a one year composition class and follow it up with lit classes during 11th and 12th grades. Maybe do a "light" lit study independently next year. My middle dd has taken both writing and lit classes with Rebekah Randolph of LT. She is going to try Blue Tent Honors English II next year, mainly because it is an asynchronous class. Hopefully I will be able to post a good review for it, too!
  10. No experience with this, but Debra Bell's AIM Academy has a pre-AP English class. We love Rebekah Randolph's writing courses at Laurel Tree Tutorials.
  11. American Lit or Brit Lit with Melodee Skiles at captivethoughttutorials.com Registration opened on Friday, and she is only accepting 10 students per class.
  12. Melissa, Did you get this to work yet? A Pearson rep emailed me back that my account was working correctly, but I still couldn't get the tests to come up. Dh right-clicked and hit "reload", and it is all working fine now.
  13. I am having exactly the same problem. It started this week, too.
  14. How about these? http://www.themagiconions.com/2010/11/lets-make-wax-dipped-pine-cone.html Simple and beautiful.
