elfgivas
roflol.... somewhat hysterically... when dh is here, his commute is 1 hour each way. however, he also "commutes" to india for 10 days a month, and that commute is about 24 hours each way. and he "commutes" to washington for 3 days each month, and that commute is 8 hours or so.... and then there is the commute to japan, the commute to australia, the commute to.... well, you get the picture. some commutes are different than others... but its a great question to ask when looking for a house. dh drew a 1 hour circle from work, and househunted within that. it was a good strategy. 1 hour in some directions was only a few miles, but in others it was 45 miles... have fun! ann
Veritaserum
It's about 40 minutes each way. I wish it were less, but he doesn't seem to mind it. He often carpools with other guys from work. When we moved into this house it was to move closer to work (different job) and that commute was about 12 minutes each way.
kokotg
15 minutes. We could never go back to any other way! (well, unless we had to. But we'd try very hard not to).
Mrs Mungo
About 30 minutes, either way. It used to take him over an hour to get home but they recently finished widening the road that leads out to our neighborhood and it's improved quite a bit since then. Stacy in NJ
Currently it's 45 minutes to an hour. We live near NYC so traffic is horrifying. As of September 30th, he'll be 10 minutes down the road. He's relocating his office.
NancyNellen
Sadly, 60-90 minutes, depending on traffic. My hubby calls it, "Living the L.A. dream."
KingM
No commute. I work at home. Or is that live at work...?
Garga
45 minutes
Tap
0-60 minutes on average. Dh is in sales. (In regular traffic) His office is about 30 minutes away but sometimes he works from home; his furthest store is 60 minutes. Bad, everyday traffic can double those numbers. Really bad traffic (bad accident on one or both of the main bridges crossing from Portland, Oregon to Washington) can triple them easily. A 15-30 minute commute is common here, 30-60 minute commute in Portland is fairly typical (especially for families who live more in the suburbs), 75 minutes isn't unheard of. I live in much smaller Vancouver (just over the border) and it can take 45 minutes just to cross our city from one corner to the other, not including going into Portland. athena1277
We live in Fairfax, VA and Dh works in D.C. It takes him 45 min to an hour to get to work. He takes the Metro, so at least he doesn't have to drive in all the craziness of D.C.
LizzyBee
In our family, I'm the one with a commute. I drive 21 miles, which can take as little as 30 minutes if traffic is light and I hit the lights just right. Average is more like 40 minutes. AngieW in Texas
My dh usually leaves after the rush, so it takes him just 25 minutes. During the rush it takes about 35 minutes.
creekland
We're in the 30 second category for hubby (works from home) and my commute when I teach is 5 miles or 8 - 10 minutes.
Krista in LA
Right now it's either a walk from the bedroom to the home office, or else he leaves around 4:30am and gets to work sometime that afternoon via a couple of airplane flights and rental car. Before he had this job, he drove a good 30 minutes each way to work.
mazakaal
Dh has an office at home, but when he needs to go to 'the office' it's nearly 2 hrs each way. That only happens once a week usually. In our 'other' life, before we moved here, dh had a 10min or so commute to work. It was ideal. I've always hated the idea of wasting so much of one's time driving to and from work. TravelingChris
We also live in Fairfax County, VA and my dh works at the Pentagon. He found a great house with only a 25-40 minute commute and more normally it is the 25 minute. I am continually amazed about how even with the enormous amount of traffic here and most roads having construction, how well the traffic does move for all that. MariannNOVA
We are in fairfax county, virginia as well. DH is downtown often, and commuting time depends on time of day, can he HOV it, is he taking the METRO, but mostly on time of day. When he is not going downtown, again, depending on time of day, it will take him 15-60 minutes depending on whether he is coming or going, and if it is a Friday or not (typically a much lighter traffic day). Without even thinking about it, most folks try to avoid routes/times of day that will have them sitting in bumper to bumper traffic....although there are locations around here where folks do it every single day. I don't think I've helped much here.:001_huh:
Shenan
It depends on where dh's current job location is. But it averages out to be about 2 hours each way. Dh thought he held the longest commute record until he met a guy who commutes from Alexandria, VA TO Richmond, VA every day. That's about a 2 1/2 - 3 hour commute each way depending on speed. :D
kalanamak
25 min in the a.m 35 min in the p.m. If I didn't homeschool I would love the time in peace with a nice TTC lecture on. Now, I don't like any of the lost minutes and will be moving closer. How "busy"/hyper is hubby. How in need of a workless, childless window? Jackie in AR
Just curious. We are looking at houses and are curious how long the average person commutes to work. K About 40 minutes, but he works his schedule so that he misses the worst part of the traffic.
