  1. I think the first year of homeschooling can be really overwhelming while you figure things out, try not to stress. The WTM is a list of recommendations, you don't have to teach exactly the way it is written. There are a wide range of abilities among 1st graders, do what you think will work for your daughter. If you are tired of reading everything aloud, look into audiobooks. I would encourage you to have your daughter read daily at her ability level instead of trying to force 30 minutes. The important thing is that she is practicing reading. If she can handle 5 minutes, have her read for 5 minutes. As her ability progresses, have her read longer. Popcorn reading worked really well for my beginning reader. Alternate reading a line, page, or paragraph.
  2. We are using an older devotional book, "Leading Little Ones to God". My husband paraphrases the lesson and reads the appropriate verses with the kids during supper. We spend maybe 10-15 minutes per day on it. My kids are 6,4, & 2 and it works well for them. It may be a little basic for a 3rd grader but I think you could make it work.
  3. I have a scrub brush that is intended for the kitchen, I put dish soap and vinegar in the handle and scrub everytime a take a shower. I have a shower stall so I do have to bend to reach the floor and the lower walls. Doing it daily keeps it pretty clean though. My kids have a small tub and I can sit on the edge and clean the tub fairly easily with that tool though.
  4. We were at a restaurant that served fantastic sweet potato fries. They were made with a rub of oregano, paprika, and cumin.
  5. Sliced cucumbers, sprinkle lightly with salt, soak in vinegar. I especially like it chilled.
  6. If you have a copy of the Well Trained Mind (WTM), SWB has outlined a plan in the science chapter. Look in the section about 1st grade science. Basically you would pick a topic for each week, read from your Usborne book, have your children narrate to you what they learned, then supplement with additional books on the same topic. You could do a project, play a game, or watch a video too where appropriate. Having said that, I haven't actually used this process yet, but I do intend to teach science the way it's laid out in the WTM to my 1st grader this year.
  7. Bummer. Is the internship required in order to receive his diploma? What about volunteering at a zoo? It could at least help him get his foot in the door.
  8. A few ideas: a wildlife preserve, fish & game department, state park, national park. I once watched a falcon presentation at the Desert Museum outside Tucson. Maybe he could search for places that do similar presentations. Has he talked to any of his professors about options?
  9. I've only placed 5 or 6 orders with RR, all but one have had a back ordered item. The back ordered item has never delayed shipping out of the warehouse by much, I think it's the shipping service they use that is so slow. When I placed my first big order last August, it took over a month to arrive, not because RR was slow to ship it, but because they use shipping DHL/USPS. My package sat in a warehouse an hour from me for 3 weeks! I learned my lesson and don't order if I need something quickly. My recent orders were 7/3 & 7/4, I expected they would ship a little slow due to the holiday and it was right before a weekend. The 7/3 order had a back ordered item and shipped 7/10, the 2nd order shipped 7/9. The 2nd order was an item I forgot and since I was having to pay shipping, I paid an extra $1 to have it not shipped media mail. It arrived the day before the big order. I still haven't received my back ordered item or an email stating it has been shipped. The items I have ordered have either been significantly cheaper than other places or items I've been unable to locate elsewhere. Yes I love that I can generally get an order from Amazon in a couple days, but I've saved a significant amount of money overall using RR.
  10. This isn't something I have witnessed. I know some families that don't just love reading, but I don't know any that are vocal about hating reading. Our library is very busy and I see all types of families there, I'm in there a lot and I have not witnessed families having to force their children to check out books. I have volunteered with a program where I go to an inner city school and read with children who are attending a summer camp. Many of these children do not have books in their homes and are not being read to outside of school. Even there I have not witnessed an extreme hatred of reading, of course I've only worked with kids in the younger grades, it may be different with some of the older children.
  11. Praying for a swift recovery for you and for your son.
  12. There is someone who posts on the boards who l think lives in Colombia. Maybe you can PM him, I believe his name is Lanny.
  13. One thing I did when my son was struggling with memorization was to practice the facts with him daily but I skipped ahead to the next subject in the book. I think it's measuring or something, he didn't have to know his facts to do that part of the book. Xtramath.com or games using dice, cards, or dominos help with practicing facts.
  14. Our library has a ton of books with CDs, it's difficult to find them in the online catalog but most are in a separate section at my library. I'm sorry you are going through this, my 4 year old would only nap when held for several months, it's a tough stage. Fortunately they eventually outgrow it.
  15. I don't know if you have a problem or not. However at our old house we used to collect the water from the ac in a 5 gallon bucket and use to to water plants. On really hot days we would empty it a couple times.
  16. My church usually had a bible passage for the entire week. Last year was Psalm 23 & this year Psalm 100, the kids help come up with motions and the passages are practiced frequently. Plus it's announced ahead of time if parents want to help at home. Music may help, Seeds has a lot of verses and you can find them at the website. You could also try YouTube. If you want something less expensive than books for the kids to write in, you could use cardstock. If you have several verses you could punch a couple holes along an edge and feed a ribbon through to make a booklet.
  17. I'm excited about everything and my Rainbow Resource order arrive this morning so I'm having fun going through it. Song School Latin is what I think my kids will like the best. I'm looking forward to SOTW because I never had a formal history class outside of my 4th grade state history class. I expect that I'll learn quite a bit this year. My son is really excited about science, he's been flipping through the animal encyclopedia that just arrived. I think it's going to be a fun year!
  18. We eased into it. I started by having my son work on penmanship every day after breakfast. Then we added subjects as he seemed ready to do more. It worked well for us.
  19. I'm glad your baby is ok! My son did something similar when he was about 3 but he stuck his finger in the hole of a sweater (belonging to his bear) and kept twisting it. It was so tight I couldn't just unwrap it and it was very difficult to get scissors in to cut it. I no longer allow my little kids to have knitted/crocheted blankets and I don't let them sleep in sweaters.
  20. I didn't expect anything from my son until kindergarten, he was 5.5. He was able most days to sit for an hour but my goal was 20-30 minutes My then 3.5 year old sat with us most days, participation was completely optional.
  21. I had one move at 18 months and one at 3. My current 2 year old will likely stay in a crib for awhile since we don't have a regular bed for him yet.
  22. PBS Kids has a lot of games, my kids don't spend much time on the computer yet so I haven't explored them much. My 6 year old does really like Fidget Factory right now though. Math Blaster is online too, but it works better on my phone.
