  1. My son has been drawing people since around age 3. They had big heads with the arms & legs coming right out of them, no bodies. He's 6.5 now and still frequently draws people that way. He will draw the body and neck if the person is doing something specific in the picture or if the person needs an outfit. He spends a lot of time drawing, several hours a week, often illustrating short stories he wrote. I'd say 50% of his people are heads with legs and arms coming out of them. Other things that he draws tend to look more realistic. My daughter on the other hand is 4.5, she isn't very interested in drawing, but if she does draw a person, it always has a body. She'll also use lots of colors (her person hanging on my fridge is 7 different colors), my son tends to stick to 2-3 colors in his drawings. I have heard that girls tend to use lots of colors and color the entire page while boys stick to a handful of colors and cover very little of the page. I've witnessed that among the kids I know. Is the difference in how my kids draw people a girl vs. boy thing or just random? I'm not concerned, but he is a little on the old side to still be drawing people that are just heads, right? When do kids typically outgrow that stage?
  2. I'm sorry to hear this, my prayers are with his family. Somehow I missed that he had cancer, but I had been wondering recently why he had been so quiet on the boards.
  3. Our AC has been out for two weeks due to a lightening strike and probably won't be fixed for another week. It's been bearable until the humidity shot up this week.
  4. This year I've been using the Banana Boat Kids. It is thick and a little hard to spread. We've been swimming several times already this summer and so far the only sun burn among 4 fair skinned people is the place I can't reach on my back. ETA all of my kids wear rash guards when swimming. I realize that's harder with teens though.
  5. I've never had that exact thing happen but raccoons are mean. I worked on a dairy farm where they had steady access to as much grain as they wanted. They were downright territorial and not at all scared of humans. I am scared of them to this day but they only hissed at me and I don't know of them hurting anyone else in the farm.
  6. For what it's worth the secretary (she is much, much more than a receptionist) at our church is not a member. I don't think she has ever been a member at our church. She is the first person many people meet when they come to our church outside of regular services so she does have to give a good impression, but she doesn't necessarily agree with everything our church believes either. I'm not sure it has ever been an issue, she's been there at least 15 years. I'm not sure from your post if this position is at your current church or just one locally. If it is the church's policy that you have to be a member, then I wouldn't apply since you aren't sure you still want to be there.
  7. Not an app but look up Hal Higdons novice 5k plan. I've used his plans to train for two half marathons and love his approach. If you want a run/walk method look up Jeff Galloway. You can't go wrong with either one they are both running experts who are widely respected.
  8. My running shoes run about $120, sometimes I can catch them for under $100 when the new colors come out though. I tend to end up with hurt knees or hips if I'm not careful about support. I do wear my shoes a long time though. My husband wears a 15 so he's the expensive one in our house, his dress shoes and work boots are $200. But he wears them for years and gets them resouled. Thankfully with Zappos and Shoebuy having free shipping in both directions he at least gets to choose from a handful of styles instead of the only pair in town like when we first got married.
  9. I like to listen to them through the NPR app, usually it's the highlights of a few talks on similar subjects and an interview with the speakers. My favorites full length talks are the talks by Ken Robinson and Sugata Mitra. There is also a really old one about car seats I think Steven Levitt did that I found pretty interesting.
  10. Agree with the above about Kathy Koch, I really enjoyed her lecture. She doesn't have children, but really understands them. I heard Martin Cothran as part of a panel, he was very funny. He is Christian and definitely spoke from a Christian perspective.
  11. Me too! I'm going to have to find someone to do it with me though as I doubt I could talk my husband into and I'm too chicken to try it alone.
  12. I prefer pants because I'm highly allergic to poison ivy and it is every where here, I always seem to break out even if I'm careful.
  13. I'm sorry. Hang in there, keep working with her, and do your best not to compare your child to others.
  14. You should be able to connect your phone to your computer via USB cable, then delete the existing photos just like you would any other file on your computer. I think you have to save your existing videos or mp3s to iTunes and then sync to your phone. My husband transferred mine, but Apple has a forum where you can get specific help. I don't have a lot of educational apps but my son does like Math blaster.
  15. My son is 6 and has outgrown them in the last year. They seemed more likely to occur on nights he got to bed late. He has always needed a consistent schedule. I haven't really found anything that helped during the "terror" but we would sit with him and often take him outside (partly to keep him from waking siblings). Once it passed he would go right back to sleep and not remember it in the morning.
  16. My sister is Emily and she's 34. She was named after a woman who is now 60.
  17. Seconding the Cuisenaire rods educationunboxed.com has videos with lots of activities.
  18. My sister is a semi-professional photographer, she recommends Cosco, which I just noticed you said you don't have. I've had very mixed results with Walgreens, you have to double check every single photo before it prints or it may be cropped strange. They do have good sales though.
  19. Staples, Office Depot, or a similar type of place that does copies should be able to cut the bindings off for you. It will cost $1-$3 per cut but they do a nice job.
  20. I just googled, according to Wikipedia (so take it for what it's worth) wild daffodils do spread seeds that take 5-7 years to flower once germinated.
  21. I keep it with me, I often read using my kindle app. I know people judge me for being on the phone at the park but would probably think nothing of it if I had a book. I'm with my kids all day every day except for church, we all need some decompression time.
  22. No clue, I thought daffodils were from bulbs. You must be a lot further north than me, our daffodils were late this year and came in early April.
  23. I went to 41 weeks with my youngest, my OB wanted to induce. I declined but was told at 42 weeks it was the practices policy to induce regardless of moms wishes. Not sure what would happen if you declined at that point. My 3rd was the only one of my 3 to spend time in NICU and was there a week.
  24. We've been switching to LEDs. You can still buy incandescent bulbs here, but the max wattage is much less, maybe 60w. I've had trouble finding them at Walmart but Lowes and Home Depot have them.
  25. I'm not sure, my daughter is still learning her letter sounds, which it is working well for. You can get a free trial to try it out. The website is readingeggs.com
