chicken mummy question
Rachel replied to athomeontheprairie's topic in General Education Discussion Board
We haven't done this yet but there are a couple blogs out there that detail how it was done. Maybe try googling. -
Sounds like my kids with peanut butter.

I had a summer birthday so I graduated high school at 17. I could have graduated at 16 but chose not to. Instead I attended high school part time and took college classes at the local university. My older two have fall/winter birthdays so they will graduate at 18. My youngest has a summer birthday and since we are homeschooling he will start official schooling shortly after he turns 5. He will therefore graduate at 17, he's almost 2 so that's only if everything goes according to plan.

Globe, map, or both?
Rachel replied to oneangelwaiting's topic in General Education Discussion Board
We have both. I think a full size globe would be better because there are so many countries you can't see on a little globe. However, since space is an issue maybe you could make a point to look at one at the library. If you decide to buy one, I found mine at Hobby Lobby and was able to use a 40% off coupon. -
dealing with sibling death - update in edited #1
Rachel replied to EmilyGF's topic in The Chat Board
I'm sure the brief time you got to spend with baby Joseph were precious. Praying for your family, I am sorry for your loss. -
That's really neat.

Do you have a friend you could stay with part way through? If not I've had good luck getting rooms through Hotwire and Priceline. Packing your own food will help and using an app like Gas Buddy will help you find the best gas prices.

Memorizing addition/subtraction facts
Rachel replied to Stages's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I ran into a similar situation with my son. We use SM but I skipped ahead to the other sections and had him keep reviewing facts though games and xtramath. It helped a lot. -
UPDATE post 1 Do these symptoms make sense to anyone
Rachel replied to Lawana's topic in The Chat Board
I'm sorry, I hope they are now getting the help they need. -
Whiteboards...Are They Necessary?
Rachel replied to shburks's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Required no, but very handy. I use it for math, copy work, and writing out memory verses. Ours happens to be magnetic so my younger kids use it for playing with alphabet magnets and drawing too. I managed to get mine for $10 when a local office was remodeling and donated all their old stuff to the Habitat Restore. If I would have had to pay full price I would have tried to make do without it. -
Help with public assistance information for low income family
Rachel replied to StaceyinLA's topic in The Chat Board
Agree with the above. Also naccrra.org will help him find childcare in his area. When he calls a local center see if they are aware of additional local assistance. Our town has a secondary child care assistance program available for people who make too much money to qualify for state assistance. It is a very small program with little funding, so it is not advertised, but daycare centers know about it. -
Welcome! Your house is even busier than mine. I will have a 1st grader, pre-k, and one toddler next fall.

Little words, not big, are a problem
Rachel replied to plumshadow's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Do you think she is reading too quickly and skips them? Or does she read "if" instead of "of"? -
Book suggestions for dd8
Rachel replied to Chrysalis Academy's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My son has read and enjoyed a lot of the books you mentioned. Recently he read Babe the Galliant Pig, Harriet's Hare, and A Mouse named Wolf by Dick King-Smith. He really liked them and has requested more books by the same author. -
Question about time limiting lessons/subjects
Rachel replied to Piper's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I use a timer, it's usually for 15 or 20 minutes though since I have a 6 year old and that seems to be the right amount of time for him. If he is focusing we usually finish the page when the timer goes off. He just finished SM 1a so it isn't a huge deal to finish, probably a minute or less. If he is dawdling I try to assess why. If I think he isn't understanding, he is done for the day even if only 2 problems were finished. When he is just not focusing because he doesn't want to do math, we quit when the timer goes off, but the page has to be finished as homework before he can do anything "fun". This allows him to reset, plus he doesn't enjoy math so the timer helps him realize he won't have to sit at the table "forever" working on it. He is really easy to read so it's easy to tell why he is dawdling though. -
CC: I feel like I've been punched in the gut.
Rachel replied to JumpyTheFrog's topic in The Chat Board
I'm sorry, praying for you. -
I would expect them to be on time or a few minutes late. If they had to drive across town and traffic was high variable I would be ok with 10 minutes early. 30 minutes early is way too early!

Where to find an affordable magnetic whiteboard?
Rachel replied to alicai's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I found mine at the Habitat Restore. A local company was redoing office space and got rid of several. -
how important is vocabulary...
Rachel replied to angelmama1209's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My oldest is 6 but I don't intent to teach it as a separate subject. We keep our children's dictionary nearby when we are reading and look up words my son doesn't know. As he gets older I may have him start a notebook or card file to help him reinforce definitions. -
s/o of BF/not BF - question about infant formula
Rachel replied to StaceyinLA's topic in The Chat Board
They have been using that process for at least 2 years. There was a big blow up about levels of arsenic in rice that prompted it. -
s/o of BF/not BF - question about infant formula
Rachel replied to StaceyinLA's topic in The Chat Board
I had a long response and lost it :( Formula companies are all required to meet certain standards but I do think some are better than others. For what it's worth the ingredients in one name brand formula have changed a lot in 6 years. High fructose corn syrup was the first ingredient when my 6 year old was an infant. Corn syrup was the first ingredient when my 4 year old was an infant. When I checked just now it was nonfat milk solids and sugar wasn't in the first several ingredients. When my milk supply dropped I ended up using Natures Only for my third, it was one of the few formulas I could find that didn't contain soy. I may have been able to find something better but the formula stage is so short I chose not to stress about it. -
At what age did you begin teaching your little ones?
Rachel replied to StaceyinLA's topic in The Chat Board
I went to a homeschool convention when my oldest was 4, we had made the decision to homeschool but I wanted confidence that I could do it. I did not do any official school work with my oldest until he was 5.5. Right after he turned 5 I did work with him using Bob books because he wanted to learn how to read, but I wasn't trying to teach him to read. -
Has anyone here ever *chosen* not to breastfeed even though they could?
Rachel replied to abba12's topic in The Chat Board
I want to echo the above responses, you don't have to breastfeed. Please don't be too hard on yourself. Your midwife may not be supportive and that's ok, professionals are there to offer guidance but ultimately parents have to make their own decisions for their children. As far as bonding, I did not have that instant bond with any of my 3 children but I really struggled with bonding with my first. I expected to hold him and instantly fall in love, that didn't happen. I felt responsible for him and protective of him, but that connection was something I grew into over several months. He's 6 now and our bond is fine. Hang in there! -
My kids eat on a schedule similar to your children. My older two rarely even eat an afternoon snack anymore unless they have hit a growth spurt. The children of most of my friends do usually have a morning and an afternoon snack. I always have fruit available if my kids get hungry between meals. Since your family eats differently you could suggest that the mom send snacks.
