  1. LOl I meant two fingers' width - Finger tip is for the skirt length. I'm getting my finger metrics confused.
  2. This - I can't agree enough with this. When I was a kid there was a local school where the uniformed girls would compare who had larger diamond studs in their ears. They also had ridiculously expensive handbags and even belts. Anything that they could bring to school was fair game.
  3. My daughter wears leggings all of the time to school (High School)- They are not banned here. All of the rules apply to both males and females. Shoulder straps need to be two finger tips in length so no tank tops for boys either. No midriff bearing shirts. No mesh shirts (which sounds like a throwback to the 80's). If a boy were to wear a skirt it would need to be finger tip length too. I think teachers use their discretion for the most part. The only instances I've hear of where students were being called out on their wardrobe was where the student was really pushing the envelope.
  4. I just read what you added. He is a German in France during WWII, so I'm not sure why it has to sound contemporary American. According to the context it sounds like it should be formal and a little forced so I bid you goodnight sounds right to me.
  5. We use the "of" here in the Northeast, or at least my little corner of it. Most public buildings I've been in including schools have analog clocks and only analog clocks. The only exception is really on athletic scoreboards. When learning a foreign language we've always encountered a unit on telling time that incorporates analog clocks. If students can't do that in their native language they will definitely have a tough time in the foreign language (or have to quickly figure it out).
  6. This isn't your child. Do you know for a fact that the child is reading above grade level? I've learned over the years that many parents either exaggerate their kids' abilities or they are honestly clueless about what goes on in the classroom. I've known parents that have said that the teacher told them their child was the best reader in the class until they realize the class is split into reading groups and their child isn't even in one of the top groups. I've known parents who insist that their child gets all A's until they see that the honor roll list is printed in the local paper. I could go on but that being said I can see two scenarios. In many decent to good school systems students "on grade level" are the lowest reading group in each respective class and would would get more of the attention for tutoring and assistance. Students below level usually have been already singled out and are receiving one on one assistance If this students falls anywhere near that level they may qualify for support programs. I've never seen any support services offered based on a single test or encounter. In some schools all children that need services are pulled out together in one program so that children aren't randomly pulled out all throughout the day. Even though this may be a reading program this student might be getting the writing assistance during this time that they need. This is especially true of private schools that may have limited resources and tutors. I would advise that this parent get further information. They have a 504 and while that usually involves social and physical accommodations rather than educational that does entitle them additional meetings. Also, in a public school a parent can request their child's file at any time, I'm not sure about private schools but they can find out.
  7. My 12yo has been doing martial arts since he was 3. He can take as many classes as he would like a week, so I try to get him there at least 2 or 3 times.
  8. I agree that usually when the play date is someone new the parents will pop in for a minute to get a lay of the land. If they are comfortable leaving then they do, if not they stay. Usually by about 7 yo most parents leave. I also think many more parents are hesitant about people driving their child in car than hosting them alone in their home.
  9. A library near me does this. They have clear plastic backpacks in the children's section that are themed. You can see all of the contents to help you decide.
  10. I think I have known women like the op is discussing. Especially in the theatre and music world. They wear mumus and birkis , have naturally grey hair, and enunciate every word speaking in round tones all of the time. I think the disconnect for me is the money. They would appear to be very simple earth mother types but most are quite wealthy. They either live in million dollar homes with their artist spouse in wealthy towns or enormous apartments in Manhattan. On one hand they use their recyclable grocery tote as a purse, but they are wearing a $40 Tom Ford lipstick. It is like they are able to live an eco-friendly socially conscious lifestyle because they can afford to so so.
  11. Most of the students I know that are interested in a veterinary career attend one of our state's agri-science high schools. Is that an option for your son? There is a hands on aspect that might make the experience more interesting and best of all it's free.
  12. I've seen people having issues because so many more classes offered these days in schools are ECE. When I was a student in the 80's only one class I took in public school was DE and that was my senior year Calculus. Even though it was taught in the school I received credit from our local state college. Today schools have many more internal DE options, including almost every upper level language class. The downside I think for former homeschoolers is that the ps cannot accept substitute credits for those classes because they have to adhere strictly to the college or university's curriculum and program.
  13. I just started watching Taboo and I'm hooked. It is fairly new, only three episodes so far.
  14. Ugh -That was me. I was always the tallest in my class and when I was 10 I was even taller than my teacher. It was tough through Middle School but then when I hit High School people started to catch up and surpass me. No one ever made fun of me, actually they always said they were jealous. I just didn't believe them. I dated boys of all heights and it was never an issue. I am 5'10" now and I love being tall. I really think it was the most difficult when I was around 7 or 8 because people would assume I was so much older than I was. I remember being in a store and having a person ask me if I worked there. I think my response was "I'm with my mommy." LOL
  15. They do sell bleach resistant towels that seem to work well. I was having the same issues with my daughter's acne medication and my mother picked up the towels for me about a year ago. I believe she found them at Homegoods.
  16. Here it varies depending on the track you are on 7th - integrated 7th grade math or honors - Pre-Algebra 8th - integrated 8th grade math or honors - Algebra I 9th - Algebra I or Geometry or Honors Geometry 10th - Geometry or honors Geometry or Algebra II or Honors Algebra II 11th - Algebra II or Honors Algebra II or Pre-Calc or Honors Pre-Calc 12th - Pre-Calc or Honors Pre-Calc - or Calculus (College Prep) or AP Calc There are also a variety of other math courses available including 4 years worth of Accounting classes, Personal Finance and Math Modeling. This is very similar to the math progression when I graduated in the 80's from a different school system in the state. We don't have school districts here -Each town or city is their own school system with the exception of some towns so small that they needs to combine with another. Personal Finance is a graduation requirement for the state, but it is an elective version of the class referenced above.
  17. I have a silicone collapsible colander. It works well for that because you can squeeze it almost flat. I can't recall where I bought it though, it may have been QVC.
  18. I use a different color for each family we are bringing gifts to. It makes sorting all of the presents easier. I did have to purchase the holiday paper I found at Target with tacos and avocados on it. Some of the tacos are wearing scarves. I'm not quite sure what I'm using it for yet.
  19. If you want your kids to attend a rally or march during school that's fantastic. Just write a note or call the school and give them permission to leave. Better yet, show up and sign them out in person and escort them yourself. This is about students leaving without permission. At the begining of the school year most middle and high school students have to sign a copy of their school policies. They know that they just can't leave without permission in the middle of the day. They also know what the consequences will be. It is the consequences that keep the students from leaving, not locked doors.
  20. Middle schoolers should not be able to leave their campus during school hours without parent permission. period.
  21. Chocolate chip banana pancakes and bacon!
  22. I confused as to how he is getting gifted services if he does not yet have an IEP in place? When students are identified as gifted and talented then then have an IEP put in place that offers them any services that go beyond the normal differentiation and advancements. If he is already participating in the program wouldn't he already have an IEP finalized?
