  1. Girls here give that gift to each other quite a bit so if the boy is gay I don't think that would be an unusual gift. If he is straight and the gift is from the VS side of the store I would think it indicates something more. If it is from the PINK side of the store I'm not so sure. Many girls here are obsessed with PINK merchandise and wear it all of the time. They want anything from that line and the underwear deal is probably one of the most affordable options in the store.
  2. Our Cairn Terrier is named Maisy. We found it on a list of Scottish dog names because a Scottish dog needs a Scottish dog name.
  3. When I was in HS I took a general home ec class that included sewing and cooking. Wood shop existed but I chose other electives instead including typing, guitar, chorus and probably a few others that I can't remember. All I really took away from it was learning how to make meringue. My dds high school today has far more electives than I could have ever dreamed of including things like fiber arts, child development, baking, video game design, career exploration, etc. Most kids interested in a trade would be a one of the local vocational schools (then and now) so you normally don't see things like metal work, automotive or cosmetology at a regular public school. Kids today also have to take phys ed. I've never heard of a school that doesn't require it. The high school here requires two full years of regular phys ed for graduation and then students can also take phys ed electives like unified sports or lifeguard certification.
  4. My father has a lifelong allergy to green peppers and he is in his 70s My mother is allergic to raw fruit with the skin or peel on. It is part of her FACES allergy which developed in her 20s. I have a lifelong allergy to mollusks. Not all shellfish just mollusks and i'm in my 40s Other lifelong allergies affecting adults over 40 I know are: rosemary cinnamon peanuts chicken and I'm sure a few others I'm forgetting.
  5. I love that show and this was a great season. I would have been happy to see any of the top three win. I always feel so inspired to bake after watching an episode, but I'm a boxed mix kind of girl.
  6. She can wear red, white and blue and be the 4th of July. Last year my daughter and all of her friends went as different holidays. It was cute and relatively easy.
  7. Cold fish sticks on white bread with mayo and american cheese
  8. This And here if you are simply doing a shake the can type of fundraiser you have to very clearly state that you are not a non-profit organization.
  9. I've sent them and received many. I only received gifts from people who didn't attend my shower for my first child and received many more gifts for the second because I did not have a shower. The gifts were never expected. I've also sent gifts when I did not attend the shower or there wasn't a shower.
  10. In the schools here if there is a student that has any level of hearing loss that requires a 504, the teacher wears a special microphone during class that is specific to a reciever (ear buds or headset) worn by the student. Is this something that can be put in place for your ds?
  11. MIddle school sports are free. No additional fees High school sports are $75 per sport with a individual cap of $150 per student per year and a family cap of $300 per year. No additional fees
  12. Here there are multiple children in school with a variety of allergies. Each year in elementary there are one or two classrooms that are allergen/nut free. This applies only to any snacks that would be brought into the room. Before school starts all of the students in the classroom get a list with guidelines and acceptable examples of what can be brought in. Most of the students have nut allergies (some quite severe) but others have gluten, dairy or egg, Allergens that can cause a reaction from being inhaled or touched (usually peanuts) are completely banned. Allergens that simply cannot be ingested are not banned but they are on the list of items parents should be aware of when bringing in treats for a birthday or party. If no one in the grade has a nut allergy then there is no nut free room but the other allergies would be addressed and those kids would still be in some incarnation of an allergy free room. During lunch there is a designated allergen free table. students in the rest of the cafeteria can bring whatever they wish. I would think that if the school had no cafeteria the snack rules would apply to lunches as well. This seems to be the procedure in most of the public schools that I am familiar with, perhaps it is a state guideline?
  13. Usually the assistant coach or athletic director will step in
  14. I don't know that I've ever been to a wedding with many kids there. Usually it's the flower girl and ring bearer -sometimes just a few other close relatives. Even weddings with 200 people seem to have very few kids so I guess adults only is normal for my experience. The save the date always gives a heads up as to who will be invited. If children aren't on the save the date they won't be invited to the wedding.
  15. We go out for ice cream quite a bit during the warm months. We have quite a few great seasonal places that aren't far from our house. Only we go out in the afternoon, or on the way home from the beach or park. The only time we go for ice cream in the evening or after dinner is on vacation.
  16. Both my kids are in ps and I've never seen a school sponsored fundraiser or had them ask for donations. Our PTO and Booster clubs do fundraisers and those go for extras like special assemblies, cultural events or to offset the cost of field trips. I don't participate in the sales but will attend fundraising functions like the holiday bazaar or shred day. Sometimes specific sports or the band will host a fundraiser like a car wash. I've never really seen any expectation of participation. People sort of pick and choose and some people never participate.
  17. Our local Park & Rec periodically offers a manners class for young children. You may want to see if something similar is available in your area.
  18. Is there a TOPS soccer program near you? It is designed specifically for children with a large range of needs and delays. Each player is assigned a buddy and they run drills and play scrimmages all for fun. http://www.usyouthsoccer.org/programs/topsoccer/
  19. Interesting. Here schools subcontract out lunch to companies that run their kitchens. The cooks and kitchen personnel do not work directly for the schools and schools around the state that use the same company have similar lunch menus. There is always one main meal each day with a few alternates. As they get into middle and high school there are more options like sandwich stations. PTA funds aren't used for that type of thing they are usually only used for extras like to supplement field trip costs or bring in speakers for special assemblies. I will add that my son's camp lunch experience was not at a school but a private facility.
  20. That looks to be your average school lunch menu here except it doesn't include the alternate choices a school lunch would have. I'm curious what would the PTA have to do with school lunch?
  21. My son has done a park and rec camp for the last few years. They usually have something like hamburgers/hot dogs, grilled cheese, wrap sandwiches or chicken nuggets with fries as an option and/or they can have salad. There is usually some type of fresh fruit and later in the afternoon they get ice cream.
