  1. :iagree: :iagree: I doubt that clothes make a difference. I was frequently honked at by truckers at that age, hasn't happened in the last decade.
  2. My nearly 7 year old has a Radian 65 and a Graco Nautilus.
  3. I think he was captivated by their skills being more advanced.
  4. Ha, that just gives me more support that children should be delayed in starting school. From the article: "Parents want to provide the best environment for their child, but delaying school is rarely the right approach. The first six years of life are a time of tremendous growth and change in the developing brain. Synapses, the connections between brain cells, are undergoing major reorganization. Indeed, a 4-year-old’s brain uses more energy than it ever will again. Brain development cannot be put on pause, so the critical question is how to provide the best possible context to support it. For most children, that context is the classroom. Disadvantaged children have the most to lose from delayed access to school." What is the best environment for a 4 year old? Is it weekly trips to the library, monthly trips to the zoo, grocery shopping and talking about food with mom, time in the sandbox, exploring with playdough, enriching read alouds with dad? Or do you force them into institutional learning? Which setting will allow for more new experiences and thoughts? Also, the article that was linked from Germany discusses sending 6 year old children to school. That is night and day different than the choice I had in sending my 4 year old.
  5. I have been wondering how many other school districts have "Young 5s" grade. If I had sent my 4 year old to K, I am sure he would have been placed in the Young 5 classroom. Those kids then enter K the following year. We opted to keep our child, with a bday 9 days before the cut off, home. He would be "gifted" with either age group. It is more a personality and a learning style than age. I did wonder what would happen when my almost 6 year old started K given he had been developing reading skills for two years at the that point. About 1/2 his class was reading before entering K.
  6. My ps 1st grader has a weekly technology class. He is starting with keyboarding programs. I think it will introduce Office programs. He also has a weekly physical ed, music, art and library class. I only had daily phy ed classes once I was in 7 - 10th grades. Before then, it was just weekly. Our school also had computer labs that I remember using Apple II in the early 80s.
  7. I am back to work on a very part time schedule. I will be at a school, so my first day was today. Some unexpected health problems created the incentive for some additional income.
  8. I have FIAR vol 1-3 and select books from each volume. I am using it with a 4 and 6 year old so I wanted to use some of the titles that are better suited for younger ages. I am organizing our rows this year to focus on geography.
  9. I see it more from the grandparents' point of view. Who wants three different blankets or three wall calendars? How do you decide which one to use or do you have to use all of them? Do you set up a monthly change the calendar date to not show favoritism of grandkids?
  10. For a blanket or calendar, I think it should be all grandchildren. Those are items seen "on display" and I wouldn't want my nieces/nephews feeling excluded. I see photo books as different because they aren't household items.
  11. We used them last year and everything went well. We did pay for seat assignments because I wanted to sit next to my kids without asking people who did pay for their seat assignment have to be moved around to accommodate us.
  12. I just had two hernias repaired with mesh implant. Recovery isn't going as well as I had hoped. Some people do not treat them right away. I needed the convenience of prior planning instead of just risking needing emergency surgery. I first went to my primary care provider. She was concerned that one of the hernias was not reducible (able to push back in) and referred me to a surgeon.
  13. We have enjoyed audiobooks while traveling. Mouse and the Motorcycle and Little House in the Big Woods were favorites at age 5.
  14. Happy birthday to her. Enjoy lego shopping and cupcakes.
  15. Dh and the kids made a bday cake for me. I could feel entitled and eat the entire thing as a big cupcake.
  16. Me, but I am recovering from surgery so I can't do much else. Do I get a cupcake?
  17. My wheezy cat has feline herpes. Is your change to natural litters recent? I can see how some could cause allergies. Eta: We use clay litter. I have concerns with it but decided not to foist changes into a working system. I do think my cat has improved since I took corn out of her diet.
  18. No! He's evolved over the years, but I have problems with exporting native wildlife for sale to zoos.
  19. I love E. B. White's audio version. Without music and voices, the focus is on the beauty of the words.
  20. I had two thrifty trips to Maui. I brought a peanut butter jar from home and picked up bread and fruit there. I was spending most of my time hiking or swimming, so restaurants weren't important to me. I rented mask and fins from dive shop and just went to different beaches on my own. I did rent a sedan car and drove it around the gravel road to Hana. It voids the warranty of the rental and a person was killed by a rock avalanche on that section of road while I was there. The drive was lovely, but our thoughts were with the deceased park ranger. I signed up for guided tours on Mount Haleakala. I loved bird watching in the rainforest. One trip we brought a tent and camped there. Camping was free after you had the park pass. I did like the aquarium that had native species. I also found a farmer's market (great produce), a youth hula dance recital and generally tried to avoid the "tourist" scene.
