I would think, without dissection, what you really need are prepared slides of various tissue samples, one called organisms, blood types, a frog growing kit (or other animal/insect), and seeds to plant and grow. We did not direct in high school biology, but we looked at tissue samples, plant cells, and many other things. We did dissection in anatomy and physiology.

Is this a strange baby shower invite?
chepyl replied to HeidiKC's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I have been to four showers held for dance teachers-3 baby and 1 wedding. There are always.lots of kids. 300+ families were invited to one. Not everyone came, but many stopped by and we had a lot of fun. If you are going to include students, it is best to include all students. Even new students could feel left out. If you don't feel comfortable, don't go. -
Cheaper options in place of Netflix
chepyl replied to Night Elf's topic in General Education Discussion Board
There are a lot of free channels on the Roku. Look at those. I found one with the Dick Van Dyke Show. There are.free movie channels as well. It OS.not as convenient and not as much choice, bit you can get a lot for free. You can only use.free Hulu on a computer. On Roku you have to pay. Amazon prime might be a little cheaper. -
s/o lying to American Students
chepyl replied to Mom22ns's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I constantly wonder if I can provide a better education. Especially with how easy I have taken it the last couple of months. Then I remind my self of his age and that if I am concerned, I will push through. I think that someone who thinks anything they do is better, or is "100% sure" they are.doing better, may not be. Those who constantly question and study and work to know what PS does and what colleges want will be successful. Being concerned makes you work harder. -
If you want to buy a dog, but not at the pound...
chepyl replied to I.Dup.'s topic in General Education Discussion Board
We found our Boston terrier in the newspaper. We visited three.breeders. one was a puppy mill, we left. One had one puppy left and he was older than we wanted. We drove two hours and paid $350. We got him the day he.was ready to leave mommy. He thinks he is a little human. -

Rental that doesn't allow dogs?
chepyl replied to I.Dup.'s topic in General Education Discussion Board
We had tenants sneak a dog in, the dog did a good amount of damage, ripped up new carpet, scratched baseboards, and chewed up the bathroom door. Don't do it. Cats are.worse, if they pre on the carpet it OS next to impossible to get that smell out. -
Anyone not using reading programs??
chepyl replied to 3browneyedboys4me's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We did 100 ez lessons, Bob books and then we read. I have a few phonics workbooks around that we use for fun sometimes. We do everything else with spelling and reading aloud. -
DH and DD often share a can of Sardines on crackers for lunch. She has loved them since she was two. They are very very good for you. I have also used coconut milk in stir fry, that is great way to use some wilty veggies.

Confused by all the acronyms here... Wow!
chepyl replied to maizeydaizey's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I think I know all of the currucula now, it took a few months of referencing the abreviations thread on the general board. I still have no clue on some of the netspeak/texting acronyms though - ymmv, and stuff like that. You might just print the abbreviation thread and keep it by the computer until you get it down. -

We are doing cycle one at home this year and we are doing ancients for history. They don't match up completely. If they have done ancients, they will at least be familiar with some of the thinga they memorize. You can always do a quick lookup of the subject for context.

Stuck in a catch-22, ideas please
chepyl replied to amo_mea_filiis.'s topic in General Education Discussion Board
Do they have friends they could star with for the weekend? Do you have someone you trust as a babysitter to stay with them? Could you take a babysitter with you to watch the kida in the hotel? There are people I would not leave my son with because I don't know what they would say to him. If my kids did not want to say with someone because they were mean, I would not leave them. -

That is awesome! What did they do then? -
Make sure you check deadlines for individual colleges. I had all of my college apps in by Nov/Dec of my senior year. For early admin and some scholarships you habe to apply early. Look at non-school based scholarships - Coca cola and other businesses offer many.scholarshops. If you have a creatibe child attending a prom of some sort, there is the Duct Tape scholarship. Many have early deadlines. Find put honors program deadlines. They can be earlier. These programs are very beneficial at large state schools. I was allowed to register early every semester. I always got the classes amd times that I wanted. I was able to graduate early because I never had to wait on a class that was full. Great list!

The socially acceptable "norm" for nursing
chepyl replied to BlsdMama's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Most people I know stop before a year, except my two sister In laws and I. My family did not understand It. I was chastised for giving Ds 2% milk at 20 months because he needed the full fat. When I explained that he still nursed amd therefor a glass of 2% was fine, since my cousins kids were all drinking that....I got funny looks. -
I just ordered new Fiesta dishes!
chepyl replied to Wendi's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Some stores sell them in pieces-Dillards and jCPenny, I think. Bed bath and beyond did for a while. You can order them online. We have a fiestaware store down the street from our house :) -
s/p Discussing our spending habits on this board
chepyl replied to Night Elf's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I cut my hair once or twice a year and pay $20. I don't have a difficult style to maintain and I dont do any color, I see no need to pay a lot for something so basic. I want to pay for my son to get a hair cut, but he prefers me. I don't spend excessive money on anything. I grew up with money, I bought one pair of Lucky jeans shopping with my mom, I wore them for five or six years. I only spens money on things that will last. $300 for a hair cut, $200 on clothes for a 4 year old? No, they dont last. When they get older, and are not growing as fast, I will go for nicer stuff. We get a lot from Walmart, target, garage sales, and thrift stores. I shop sales for clothes. I bought more expensive curriculum for things that I can reuse, for workbooks, I shop eBay for good deals. DH has collected all the building materials and extra dirt for the garden for free. We work hard, we want to have money for the thinga we enjoy, eating out every now and then, a movie, spending money for vacation, a massage, etc. I dont enjoy a hair cut, it is necessary, I dont spend excessively on it. Plus....I have hated cuts from expensive places, but never been disappointed by SuperCuts. -
Do you regard books as a commodity item or treasure?
chepyl replied to Hannah's topic in General Education Discussion Board
It depends on the book. I have a few treasured books. Curriculum books are a commodity. -
Is there any benefit to spelling vocabulary words?
chepyl replied to Dmmetler's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
No benefit unless spelling rules are taught and used to build the lists. I spent 12 years in random lists, I should be able to spell lots of hard words, but I can't. I memorized for a test and then forgot as I memorized the next week. I learned ONE spelling rule - I before e except after c and in sounding like a as in neighbor and weigh- and I learned that on an episode of Tailspin. My six year old spells better than I do, but I have taught him phonics and spelling.g rules. -
We run auditions 2-3 times a year with our theatre students. Auditions always include cold readings. 7-12th graders trip up on words that follow basic phonics rules. Even when we tell them the word half of them get stuck on it or mispronounce it. DS, last year, as a Ker, read better than 4th grade ps students. Cold readings with some of our late elementary students get painful. You can tell what students know phonics and what students don't. And the basic historical references from the scripts are lost on so many of them. It makes me sad.
