  1. My dad always talked about "grading on the curve." When I got to college, there were still a few professors who did it that way, but most had stepped away from it. I think ot is awful that they are going backwards. Sorry your bil has to deal with this.
  2. I have had mine for 11.5 years, we have broken 3 pieces and chipped one. And my kids help load the dishwasher. Of course....one that broke was my chip/dip plate in a discontinued color :(
  3. I love my fiesta ware. I could not decide either. For college graduation, my mom have me the light yellow, pink, light blue, and turquoise - two of each. Then for our wedding we registered for a few more.....we now have 20 place settings in 10 colors......:blushing:
  4. She would probably be fine, bit if it is the same director, it would be good to do something different.
  5. Typically, no, you do not sing a song don the show. Sing something from a show in a similar style/time period. If you sing a song for a roll you are not right for (or you dont fit the director's vision for the part) it can hurt you in an audition. We teach our students to pick other songs. Now, some audition notices say to pick a song from the show, generally a certain cut. For community and educational theatre, this is not a hard and fast rule. If it is the only songs is prepared with, use it. If she has something else, go with that. What type of theayr is this? Prof, semi pro, community, school?
  6. He does not need chapter books to increase fluency, or even reading level. A lot of picture books are at a 4th-5th grade level, some higher. He just needs to read whatever interests him. My son read 4 magic tree house books and then found them boring. He went back to all the picture books we have and some Dr Seuss, then one day he picked up Harry Potter on hos own. I only require time, 15 minutes minimum per day before he ges computer or Wii time. Don't stress about what, just that he is reading. Life got easier when I stopped pushing.
  7. I am not even planning for dd to join in our studies yet and they will be three school years apart. She will be K and he will be 3rd. We will be on SOTW 3, I will probably have her do that with us, but, I may change my mind. She is very different from her brother! She listens in and participates in science labs, and does her coloring book for now. Plus, there is new curriculum out all the time...in six years, you might find something better.
  8. My Ds told me he wanted to go to college and get a good job so his wife won't have to work and can stay home and teach their kids, just like me. It is very important to him that he cam tale care.of.his.family, like his daddy.does.
  9. Yahtzee is my son's favorite. It is good for multiplication too.
  10. Smaller hospitals don't have ful surgical staff in at all times. I have one hospital choice for vbacs because of this. I would definately go with a hospital with full staff at all times. The hospital where Ds was born had to cal the anethesiologist in when I changed my mind about an epidural. I had to continue in pain and exhaustion while he came in from home.
  11. I would call him second on paper since he is not at a third grade level, you want a good foundation when he has to test. Call him third for extracurriculars if that so where his friends are.
  12. Practice, whether it is single digit or multi digit addition will help cement the facts. When we learned mulidigit addition with regrouping last year we did three problems a day for about a month. He could take his time, but still be done in less than 30 minutes. As he got faster we added more problems. When we atarted 2a this past fall, he did a leason in 30 minutes. We did other things for fact memorization: Flash cards Yahtzee Sum swamp Monopoly And computer games with math. I tried drill sheets and he hated them. Play is a much better way to cement those facts. Don't get another workbook, take a few problems a day. Whatever he can do in 30 minutes. Then play a game.
  13. We don't watch regular tv much, so I have not seen them. Those clips are funny!
  14. It can be a problem depending on the location of the garage. We could not park two cars In our large circular drive because it would block the garage. My mom backed out and hot my sister's car one day because it was in the wrong spot .... And mom was not paying attention. ;)
  15. Too close. I would call kids by the wrong name all the time. It really is upsetting to be called the wrong name, even on accident. My Mom called me Shirley (her sister) all the time; then she would skip my name and call me my sister's name, she is younger. I like Owen Andrew Eli Michael Noah James Jordan Or, if you want a "k" sound Clay/Klay Cooper Chris, Christopher, Christian
  16. We used Spelling Plus for my young first grader. He loves it because it is not workbook pages. We do the dictation with it, a couple sentences a day.
  17. Mine is in my signature. I have not bogged in a few months. But there are a few fun things from early in the year.
  18. 13 has some fun songs! Songs From a New World is Another One. The main problem you run into with contemporary musicals is the content of songs. But you can generally find a good 16-32 bar section.
  19. Did you just start with 7 or did you start lower? I flipped through 5th and feel like I may need to start there for a good review! I have forgotten so much since high school and college:tongue_smilie: We had to buy a copy of Elements of Style for my master's program. It is a VERY helpful little book! It has a whole section with commonly misused words: accept/except, lay/lie, and more!
  20. We started the year with the following: Classical Conversations Foundations (At Home) SM 2a&2b SOTW 1 with the maps and color pages, plus a lapbook R&S 2 RS4K Biology Spelling Plus with Dictation Silent reading and read alouds at bedtime *Neat handwriting is expected on everything, but we don't do extra practice sheets. We spent 1.5 hours a day on all of this. History and Science alternated days. We are only doing one science even though they are intended to be semester courses. We are doing one a year 1st-3rd, then two a year after that until we finish all of Prelevel 1 and Level 1. This means we have really had time to memorize the material, look at videos and pictures online. Now, we have dropped spelling, we made it through all of the Kindergarten, First, and Second Grade lists with no problem. I thought we would take a break. We also dropped CC, I like some of it; we made it through all of the latin once and all of the skip counting. We will try it again next year and we will listen to the cds some, but we are not spending time on it. We are going to memorize some poetry instead. So we are down to math, grammar, and science. We are going to finish SOTW over the summer. DS son said we could do it on his break, because it is not like school ;) When we finish either math or grammar, we will pick history back up. In the meantime, we will be reading the lit suggestions and science sections from What Your First Grader Needs to Know. Our days are much shorter now, 30-45 minutes, but we will be schooling all year for the most part. *A lot of the schedule changes are due in part to how sick I have been. I have good days, and really bad days! But this baby is really slowing me down! With our relaxed schedule, DS has done really well. Since we do a few things a day, his retention is so much better than when we were trying to do it all in a day.
  21. Don't do "Popular!" It is overdone and way more difficult than most people think. I get so sick of hearing from 12-16 year olds. My sister has auditions for more modern shows (on Broadway and for regional theatre) with POP and rock songs. Look at some Jason Robert Brown shows. They are contemporary and there is plenty of music to choose from. Don't do a song from an anthology or audition book. Try to get a hold of the full score, university libraries have them.
