  1. Hi, I'm looking to see if anyone has compiled a list of resources for elementary math (books for parents, workbooks for kids, math games, online math resources, math manipulatives) consisting of some things that they have used over the years for both math-hating and math-loving children. I have kids ranging from K to 5. Thank you so much in advance.
  2. My 7yo ds is not really interested in reading chapter books unlike his older brother claiming the chapters are either too long, pages have too many words, or not interested in the subject at all, or whatever. But he's really into comic books, Diary of Whimpy Kids, and Captain Underpants and thinks they're amusing. He always choose graphic novels over traditional chapter books. We tried Flat Stanley (he likes those fine) and would like to move him beyond Magic Tree series. He's mildly interested in Geronimo Stilton series but not interested in Encyclopedia Brown. Any suggestions? I really would like him to read more to increase fluency. He likes to be read to, but is not too responsive to that either unless it's something he's interested in. Thanks in advance.
  3. I'm planning to afterschool writing and math for my bright 10-year old 5th grader. What has worked for you and your dc given time needed for school homework, music practice, sports, and downtime in general. Please share curriculum specifics as well. The more hands-off for me the better as ds doesn't particular enjoy or receptive to instructions from me. Thank you, I look forward to reading your thoughts.
  4. Hi there, I'm thinking of enrolling my son in either EPGY's expository writing course or go with a private writing guide from writeguide.com. He just turned 10 and is doing 5th grade work. If you have experience with the above, I would love to read your feedback and for the write guide, do you remember who your child worked with? If you have another writing program that you think is worthwhile, please let me know. I'm only interested in outsourcing this as my son is not willing to take instructions from me when it comes to writing, he thinks I'm too critical and know too much:( Thank you for your help.
  5. hi all, any ideas for 10th birthday party activities for a boy who loves to build, i'm thinking of something simple and fun that kids can build during the party and take home as party favor. i also welcome any other ideas for activities. my son is also interested in digging for ancient coins, any ideas where i can them online for cheap? thanks so much in advance.
  6. from singapore math.com, it shows you how to do bar diagram very clearly. maria on mm teaches you doing the bar diagram in one step, singapore math teaches you in two steps (write out 1 diagram for each known) and it makes it more clear for the child and me.
  7. I think my ds age 9.5 bright 5th grader is getting a kick out of goofing off when learning with me that a simple explanation takes a long time. I'm losing patience and feel I need to remind him often to stay focused. Finally when I nicely excused myself he begged me to come back to teach him and I just told him to do the work himself. I went outside to call my dh to vent and came back in and ds just finished the work with no mistakes. He is very able and an indy learner. My ideal hs scenario is collaboration and he likes it too but it takes too much time right now with the goofing off. This is our first homeschooling and so far I don't enjoy it too much and just want to make this as bearable as possible for me. I have other thing things to do around the house and I feel offended wne ds is purposely wasting my time. Homeschooling, btw, is his choice after years of ps. So, I need your help in choosing another lang arts curriculum that is open and go, worksheet type is okay, ds reads well and is able. So far we are using wwe level 4. While we both love the passages, it takes too much time for us. We are also using all combining it with mct grammar town. All is super easy for my ds and yesterday I made him read the instructor part himself and he did and answered the questions in the student section. Grammar town is far more challenging and ds enjoys the clever stories. We are also using cesar's english 1 which is teacher intensive it's so great I don't think I can give it up and we are also using red hot root words ds likes the latin derivatives as he loves english. I feel ds is not getting enough wiritng practice with wwe 4, the retellings that he needs to do is short and i'd like him to do moew writing. I own sentence composing for es by kilgallon but haven't started. He needs to work on learning how to vary his sentences and I don't know if this is possible for him to do it all alone without much help from me. Please could you recommend a secular comprehensive lang arts program and includes writing. I know of saxon grammar but I heard the writing portion is not regular enough and comes after 10 lessons. If I can't do this at home, I'll outsource this. Also, we are not doing anything for literature yet. My ds reads a ton but we're not discussing the books. I bought lightning lit 7 but I don't know if this is can be done independently. My ds is a natural speller. Right now were no doing anything with spelling, occassionally I would test him on the words from cesar but I haven't done it regularly. Thanks so much in advance for your suggestions. I'm really tempted but hate the idea of sending him back to ps. At least I know he won't be wasting my time!
  8. I was told that something like the Last of the Mohicans has biases and is told from a non-native perspective. I would like my 5th grader ds to be able to compare and contrast something like that with perhaps another fiction written by a native (Joseph Bruchac?). For the non-native perspective, he's chosen to read Calico Captive, anyone has a suggestion for titles to compare and contrast this with? Thanks!
  9. My 5th grade son is interested in studying Native Americans and would like to tie this in with our study of colonial times, so we would like to focus on tribes in the East Coast. Anyone have suggestions for resources on the various tribes in this area so that he could learn about their differences in customs, language, other ways of life, etc. Also, he's interested in writing a proposal to solve/find aide to a current Native American issue and send it formally to an organization that is heading the issue. Anyone have suggestions on where we should start so that I could help him with implementing his ideas? Thanks so much. Lisa
  10. i'm thinking of the last of the mohicans since my 5th grader 9 yo son is interested in american colonial times. he loves historical fictions so i'd like to give him as much novels set around this time. he's read johnny tremain, sign of the beaver, and matchlock gun so far. i'd like to read about your thoughts and other ideas. thanks very much.
