I'm trying to help my sister come up with electives for her dd who she is going to pull out of ps 9th grade. Her dd was about to start a new class called "Social Issues". She said the class sounded fun and it'd be cool if she could do it at home. I read the course description and the class is all based on research. The teacher picks a topic and researchs it and makes lesson plans. I was thinking of ways she could do this at home and came up with this.. Her dd picks topics and researchs them herself and then does a project on each one. She could probably do about 6-8 different topics. I think that could take 60+ hours. Can she count that as .5 credit for an elective? Also if she works through CLP book The Exciting World of Creative Writing can that be a half credit in Creative Writing?

I just thought about starting points for my sister who's pulling her 9th grade dd out. On the samples it says it's worth 3 credits? I'm not sure if thats completely accurate. I'm wondering what credits you awarded if your using this? Also is there a teachers guide or anything like that of somesort to help grade the work? Thanks!

The only thing is she's a single mom, who is *really* busy. So she can't teach it herself. Does she have to do labs in Biology? Maybe dvd/virtual labs would be enough? Thanks!

Anyone have experience with Notgrass? I think it looks pretty good for a 9th grader. I think she'd have to add something for grammar and vocab and bible but that could cover History, Lit and Writing and she should be able to find it used. Or maybe just do the government one so it's not so overwhelming? She's trying to have her dd finish it all by the fall.

My sister is going to be pulling her 9th grade dd. She is not going to use the credits she got from the public school because she was only there for one trimester and only got 2.5 credits. She can spend at most $500 (that's pushing it). She already has Health (lifepacs that we're given to her and she plans to later have her dd take a First aid class). So she'll need Algebra 1, Biology, English, History? and 2 more full credits in electives. It doesn't matter which ones, she could even do a religion class. Her dd will have to do most of it independently. Her dd is smart if something keeps her focus, which is somewhat hard to do.:tongue_smilie:She is pretty behind in grammar and doesn't know how to diagram so something like CLE for english is out. Honestly I've spent way to much on highschool for my kids and I'm not very aware of all the options. Ideas or suggestions? :bigear:

My sister and her 14 year old daughter moved to our town in Mid-September. Her daughter was being homeschooled for 8th grade but when she moved here she enrolled her in the public school for the 2nd trimester. The 3rd trimester just started. My sister has some things going on (to personal to post on a public forum) and it seems like the best option is for her to move to Florida. As of right now she's thinking she will move there this summer and her dd will be homeschooled again. I'm encouraging her to pull her dd out now and go there ASAP. Even if they don't go now, she mind as well pull her out now. So here are my questions.. What do you have to do in Florida regarding homeschooling? From what I understand she has to register with the superintendent..What else? If she moves there sometime next month will she still need to do all that stuff or can she wait until the fall? Would you consider her dd a 9th grader? She will be 15 in early november but the cut off date is different from our state and it would just be easier to have her do highschool at home and not worry about what she did at ps. Anyone know of co-ops or homeschooling groups in Naples? What are the duel enrollment options/procedures in FL? Are homeschoolers allowed to duel enroll for free? Okay I think that's it for now unless we think of more questions.. Thanks!

Thanks for the links, I haven't heard of either of those! Going to look at them closer. I'm thinking I'll do the 3R's with him at his own pace and then let him join in on history and science with my younger kiddos. Unless he can't keep up. He does like to listen to read alouds, as long as he has something to keep his hands busy. He also really likes projects and experiments even though he needs help with them and thats what I'm doing with my K'ers next year.

For my 5th grader, MUS and Life of Fred For my Kindergarteners in the fall, Rightstart and Life of Fred

TOG scares me, it looks like a lot of planning and prep work everytime I look at it makes me overwhelmed. Omnibus is definitely out. I don't know about HOD, it does look wonderful but we would use different Math, LA, Bible and Science (RTR science uses Apologia Astronomy which we're using now) so at that point I mind as well go with something just for history/lit. I might just stick with Ambleside Online and plan this for highschool. (Maybe someone could tell me what they think; hint,hint! ;))

I have a friends whose dd is in 9th grade at the local highschool and we were talking about school. She took exams for English 9A this past week. I found out in that class the only novel they read was The Outsiders by S.E Hinton. Their exam included the district exam (all multiple choice/true & false questions) and The Outsiders exam and an essay about The Outsiders and it was open book. :001_huh: I definitely do not think this is a highschool level book! But maybe I'm wrong, I have strong readers. Wondering what grade level you consider it?
