  1. My 17yo son has always had trouble focusing. He also has food allergies. I did have him tested with some condensed tests when he was 13yo. The results showed he is gifted, but also had some processing issues. The tester also recommended seeing a medical doctor for ADHD. He definitely has ADD and has been on medication since that time. It helps some, but there are definitely other issues. We never addressed the processing issues. I know we should have done this years ago, but I want to get him fully tested. Maybe there are some things we can do to help him reach his potential. He wants to be engineer, but math quite a struggle for him. Our insurance does not cover this type of testing, and our doctors have been of no help in giving us any type of recommendation. How do I find someone? It seems so overwhelming. We live in southern California (north Orange County) if that helps. I appreciate any advice you give me.
  2. I know how it feels to be dismissed and treated as a smother mother. Most people don't get food allergies. It is nearly impossible to get decent information about food beforehand. My son is now 17. He went to four different places this summer. Thankfully, he never had a reaction anywhere. I also have a problem with my 17yo not taking it seriously enough. That's what concerns me.
  3. You would need a NASB. If you don't want to buy a physical Bible, you can use an online resource. You don't need to have the study Bible. Depending on the child, you will probably need to help an 8-9 year old. An older child could work independently. For the last couple of years, my daughter would do a week's worthof work. Then we'd have a day where we went over it. She also said her memory verse to me at that time.
  4. My son has food allergies and ADD. He is also allergic to dogs and cats.
  5. My son took Aviation Science with The Potter's School a few years ago. I don't know if they still offer it. Is she interested in joining Civil Air Patrol? It has been great for my son.
  6. We've taken Writers Workshop, English 1, English 2, English 3, and Advanced Composition. I find the classes to be rigorous and quite a bit of work. I can recommend Mrs. Frederick for sure. We haven't had any problems with tech issues. Most teachers respond promptly to emails. My son took Aviation Science, Python, and Logo to Lego. I wasn't as impressed with the grading and administration of Python and Logo to Lego. The Aviation Science class was right up my son's alley. I'd recommend that one. I've heard great things about the Photography, French, and CAD teachers. Maybe if you ask about specific teachers, you might get a good response.
  7. Just had it happen twice. Once I was quoting a post to reply. The second time I was editing my signature.
  8. Forwarded this one to my sons. You guys are a great resource. Thanks!
  9. khanacademy.org. He can choose to work on just the geometry concepts.
  10. I would absolutely splurge, if possible, and hire a guide to drive you around in your own vehicle. Everyone recommended we do this and our guide was fabulous. I think they work for the Park Service. I know I reserved in advance.
  11. As someone else mentioned, the new Getty is amazing. I don't know the age of your kids, but mine liked it. If you decide to go there, I seem to remember you need to reserve the free parking ahead of time. I'd pick the Queen Mary over the mission at SJC. Your third day plan is a little adventurous. Traffic from the DSC to Griffith Park will be horrendous. The Getty and Griffith park are fairly close together. They could be combined. I don't know how much you enjoy driving or your tolerance for traffic, but your plan involves a lot of it.
  12. I love the California Science Center, especially since it is free, BUT it is much further from Anaheim. You will end up in traffic. There are carpool lanes on some of the freeways if you go there and pick the right route. Also, the neighborhood around the CA Science Center is sketchy. You won't want to get lost driving in that area. If you like the beach, I'd take a trip there. Just be aware that it can be 90 degrees in Anaheim and still be cloudy and cool at the beach. Sorry to sound like such a downer! Hopefully it will warm up by the end of the month.
  13. I wanted to add: I wouldn't drive to Big Bear without your husband. It is a very curvy road. It is tiring to drive, takes longer than you think, and you'll probably end up sitting in traffic at least one way to get there.
  14. If you like amusement park rides, Knott's Berry Farm is a good place for that. We have annual passes. Just go first thing in the morning. The lines DO get long, though. Also, right across from Knott's is Soak City, a water park. Look online for discount tickets to both places. I wouldn't go to the La Brea Tar Pits. The traffic will be horrible. I'd only go on a weekend. If your kids are into cars, the Petersen Automotive Museum is walking distance from the tar pits. I haven't been to Discovery Science Center in years, but I hear it is expanded. It is close by to Anaheim, so I would definitely hit that. Look into that Museum Exchange thing someone mentioned upthread. We used that when we traveled to Chicago. Legoland is great if your kids are into legos. That would be a full-day trip for you. It's probably actually close than the tar pits in traffic, though! Feel free to PM me with any questions. I live local to Anaheim.
  15. Can't wait to see the series. I'll have to find a way to see it since we don't have cable!
  16. My son took it and passed it the first time....barely.
  17. I live in northern Orange County, so I can't help you with groups. You can try cheaofca.org. CHEA has a list of PSP's and support groups. Feel free to contact me if I can help. Welcome to California!
  18. How do you know which ones are available for one credit? I might have to rejoin!
