  1. I've bookmarked this site to look at this summer. I think it'll make good practice between German 1 and German 2.
  2. He told me that my son can email with any questions. He will happily make an extra video to help with the answer. Unfortunately, my son does not take advantage of this when he should. That's another story! Also, my son did badly on one of the Precalculus tests. He told him to study more and sent an alternate test.
  3. I would try differend ADHD meds. I have a son just like yours. It's frustrating even WITH the medication.
  4. Thanks for the information! Glad to hear you got the accommodations you needed.
  5. The Potter's School uses Analytical Grammar as part of the English 3 class. My 14yo son is using it this year. They cover the entire program in one year.He first watches the video. Then I have him do one practice exercise, only the evens or odds. If he does well on that, he takes the test. End of Unit. For some of the more difficult units, he has done two days of practice exercises. I never have him do all of the problems except on the test. He is required to do them all for the class. The program is thorough and incremental. Even the tests are open book, which takes some of the pressure off the student.
  6. I really like The Potter's School class titled Writers Workshop. My last two kids each took it in 6th grade, but some kids are a year or two older.
  7. It depends how much you owe on the equity line. If you can pay it off within 18 months, I'd throw everything at it until it's gone. But I'd ONLY do that if you purpose not to borrow on it again. I'd build your emergency fund up to three months. If you are eligible for Roth IRA's, I'd fund them next while also saving some "fun" money.
  8. My sons both have ATT GoPhones. We pay $25 every three months. If they make a call, it is 10cents per minute. They hardly ever call. From the $25, they each purchase a $5 per month text package. The package includes 200 texts per month. The amazing thing is that the texts roll over. Since they are boys and hardly every text, now they have over 1,000 texts. Go figure. The monetary balance also rolls over, so they probably have $100 plus on the phone since they never call either. As long as you renew before the expiration date, you don't lose the money or texts. I have auto-renew set up on theirs. The phones themselves are inexpensive online. I paid $25 for one and got $25 free minutes. That was awhile ago though. One of my sons uses an old iPhone 3GS with the data turned off. He can use it as a smartphone on WiFi.
  9. I've seen this list before, but I forgot about it. Thanks! We're not military, but I'd love to have access to these tests. That makes sense then. My son who took both Ameican History tests passed the Government CLEP. My son who didn't take those tests received a 49. I like the idea of taking the tests in the proper order. I'll have to check the library for the Peterson tests. We're also Sonlighters, so hopefully that'll help with some of the tests. We love books!
  10. I wish there were one here in CA. My so is doing the Biology one in Phoenix next month. Road trip!
  11. Thanks for the link to the extras for Core 5/F. I'll add some of these to my list! To the OP, we have used every core through Core 100. We love reading and don't do a lot of hands-on activities around here. My kids' favorite memories of homeschool are reading the SL books together.
  12. These are the things that I'm doing with my son, even though he actually is enrolled in an online course with redwagontutorials. You can buy a CD that reads the book to her. I just purchased one for my son. Make sure she is doing all the on your own questions, in writing Make sure she types/writes up the answers all the practice problems at the end of each module Using the answer key, go through all the solutions to the practice problems. Either online or print out each module's vocabulary from quizlet.com. Study the vocabulary and formulas every day. If she needs extra help, extra practice problems for each module are in the back of the book. Do those too. Go over all of those also. Hopefully at this point she'll be ready to take the test. My son has not been doing well, so this week I am sitting down with him and teaching him to take notes as the text is read. I'm making sure he understands each example problem and answers every on your own question. After this module I'll wean him off my assistance. That's the plan, anyway. Hope this is helpful to you. Red Wagon Tutorials also sells videos and notes for individual modules if you need help with a specific module. As I said, my son has access to a real teacher and a 1 1/2 hour lecture a week. He still was struggling.
  13. Jumping on the bandwagon here. I have a son with severe food allergies. Having a bunch of scouts cook for your child is not safe. He is not old enough to manage this situation.
  14. One of the reasons teens wait in California is because of the extra requirements when you take the driving test before age 18. You need to take a 30 hour class, have 6 hours of professional driving instsruction, and 50 hours of driving experience before taking the test. The expense and time commitment, along with the horrendous southern California traffic and expense of insuring a teen driver, causes the teen to get his license later. Personally, I was glad to provide the instruction since we have the money. For our family, it just made sense to spend my time and money to prepare a safer driver for society. Since there are no insurance costs associated with a permitted driver, there was no downside. We spent six months getting his 50 hours of driving. If, at that time, I did not think he was a good driver, he would not have been allowed to take the driving test. He would have continued to drive with the permit. I have a seen my son mature a lot through the process of learning to drive. It has been a step into the adult world.
  15. I'm not sad to see the doctor twins leave. We were just shaking our heads last night. I completely agree: if you can't swim, don't go on Survivor or Amazing Race.
  16. I don't know if this is helpful, but my son uses an iPhone 3GS on an ATT GoPHone plan with refill $25 every 3 months. Out of the $25 every three months, he pays $5 per month for 200 texts. He doesn't text much and the leftover texts rollover so now he has thousands. :) He turned off the data so he can only use it on Wifi. So far he hasn't had any hassle from ATT.
  17. We actually have access to this course. Did you make the quizlets? Any chance you can share them with me? My husband is an orchestra conductor, so he's been to quite a few concerts. I like this idea. Even though he likes photography, I'd rather do something using computer technology if that's a choice. Do you have any experience using the courses on this website? I'll look at it more in depth. It looks interesting. Thanks, everyone!
  18. I like the idea of a CC class. It would be great to have it be useful. I know he's like AutoCAD. I hadn't thought of a drawing course. He has trouble with handwriting and types everything, so I'm not sure how drawing would go over with him. I'll keep the drawing in mind. That is a new idea for me. I'll look into your selections. I'd probably lean more toward music if I used a TC course just becaue my husband and I are classically trained musicians. Music is definitely under consideration. Thanks for the link.
  19. I need a suggestion to fulfill a fine arts requirement for my son. He will be a senior next year and plans to major in engineering. We would prefer something not too time consuming. If there is a class that has something to do with computers, he would love that!
  20. My dd is 11yo. If she wanted to take a doll somewhere, I'd be fine with it. She still loves her baby dolls and all her friends know it. Not that it matters, but she is a socially aware, popular kid.
  21. My 16yo has taken three CLEP tests and passed all three with a score of 50 or higher. We have used instantcert. I don't feel like he is using it to the full advantage. Do you have any specific recommendations about how to optimize use of the flashcards? Also, are there any specific tests your son thought were easier than others? I have a couple more in mind to take as we continue with our normal curriculum. Getting an online degree won't really work for his field, so we are using the CLEP's for validation of mommy grades. Hopefully, most of the credits will transfer. His most likely college choices do accept CLEP credits. Any advice you can offer is appreciated. Thanks!
  22. I started last year with with level 5 with my 5th grader. It was difficult for her at first. It is a good place to start. You can always go through the lessons quicker. We also only do the odds or evens, depending on the calendar date. I do own the worksheets. I use them instead of the lesson sometimes to avoid all the writing. My dd appreciates that. I still have her do the review sections from the book for that lesson. I also use the tests. I highly recommend getting the teacher's manual. It is very helpful. I bought both level 5 and 6 used. I resold level 5 for about what I paid for it. The worksheets and tests are only around $3 each.
