  1. Waiting. The waiting for us is financial. We are waiting to hear from two universities about receiving a tuition exchange. Hopefully, we'll hear in the next couple of weeks. My son doesn't seem to mind waiting, but I want to move on to the next thing.
  2. My oldest has taken DO Precalculus and Calculus. My son has ADD and is a very slow worker. He also came into the course from Math U See, so he probably had learning gaps to fill. It took my son 12 months to do Precalculus. He finished with a B in the class. We decided to continue with DO for Calculus. It has been extremely difficult for my son. He is just finishing the first semester work this week. I've finally realized that the format of the class is not working for him. He needs more interaction. I have found DO helpful. He responds to emails promptly. FWIW, both my boys are taking DO Physics this year. They are keeping up and it doesn't seem to be a problem.
  3. Two of my kids have had Mrs. Frederick for English. They've enjoyed having her as a teacher. She returns papers quickly and responds promptly to any emails. I like that! I feel we know her well, but we've had her for three classes now. Next year will be our fourth class. Mrs. Thomas usually teaches oversees sections at times that don't work for us. We only had her once as a sub.
  4. We've had Janis Gaines as a teacher. My son liked her.
  5. I was wondering about this myself. My son has severe food allergies, so he has a different reason. The pros and cons would be mostly the same, though.
  6. I had this happen last year with a live Chemistry class using Apologia. What I did: 1. Bought the mp3 of the textbook. Listening to it while looking at the text seemed to help somewhat. 2. I sat next to my son and made sure he did EVERY on your own question. My boys will skip the work if they think they can get away with it. 3. I had him do the entire study guide. Then I would correct it and sit next to him (with the answer key) until he knew how to do every one correctly. Even doing that, he barely pulled off a decent grade in the class. It was torture. Edited to add: I also sat next to him while he took notes on each module, teaching him what to write down.

  8. I sent you a PM, but the answer is no, I wasn't really concerned. The companies do this for a living. I decided the chances were slim for a hiccup.
  9. My son heard from his last university yesterday. He was accepted to California State University Long Beach. Now we just wait to see which ones we can afford. After that, he'll make a decision.
  10. I'm glad it wasn't just me with the iplayer. I was confused. Plus nothing was live last night because of the time difference. Thanks for helping me out.
  11. I installed Tunnelbear and have the BBC site bookmarked. Now what do I do? Is there a way to see the opening ceremony after it already aired?
  12. I'd recommended spending some time on the Alaska board of cruisecritic.com. It was an invaluable resource. I'd highly recommend getting a balcony. On our Holland America ship, even if you didn't go out on the balcony, the glass doors go from floor to ceiling offering an amazing view even from inside the room. We booked all our excursions independently after researching on cruisecritic. We didn't use any of the ship's providers.
  13. My husband is blessed to be able to do what he loves. He is an orchestra conductor.
  14. Google AAA Driving Contract. That's what we used.
  15. We just went on an Alaskan cruise with our three kids this past summer. i don't have a lot of time to post right now, but feel free to PM me with any questions. We cruised on Holland America out of Vancouver round-trip. I would definitely recommend choosing an itinerary that includes Glacier Bay. That was one of our deciding factors. All three of my kids enjoyed the kid's programs. There weren't a ton of kids on the cruise, so the program was small. My teens enjoyed meeting other teens from all over the world. I have to say that I don't know what a 20yo would do unless he just hung out with family. I was glad all my kids were under 18, so they had a built-in way to meet people. Some of the shows were quite enjoyable and some were lame. I have a son with food allergies, and the dining-room staff did a great job adapting food for him. The buffet was not as successful. Most of the servers did not speak English. Yes, the excursions ARE expensive. Be ready to spend money. There are always cheaper alternatives, but the ones we went on were fabulous.
  16. While waiting for the financial aspects to fall into place, I am burying my head in the sand!
  17. I can tell you what DO wrote on the test: y' = x - siny / xcosy - x. (The x- sin y is the top of the fraction. xcosy - x is on the bottom.)
  18. My son is taking Derek Owens' Calculus and has been struggling. He took the chapter three test and can't figure out a couple of things. Problem 1: f(x) = x^3 - 18. g(x) = f^-1(x). Find g'(9). DO says the first step is g(9) = 3. How does he get that? He understands the rest of the problem. Problem 2: x sin y = xy. Find dy/dx. He's supposed to use implicit differentiaion. I know the answer, but have no idea of the steps in between. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!
  19. I'm glad to hear your brother is married with children. As my brother grew up, many of his friends with CF died. As a result, he expected a limited life expectancy. He didn't plan for a future, if that makes sense. He works in a state job that he doesn't love just for the insurance. I'm sure he's not the only one who does that, but he seems to exist instead of living. He has had the same girlfriend for over 15 years. She was divorced with small children when they met. Her kids are now in college. They finally got married this past year. I'm happy about that! He expends so much energy dealing with his medical issues that he doesn't have much left for anything else. I'm hoping my brother's kidney/pancreas transplant is successful, and his quality of life increases substantially. I hope your brother is around for a long time. It sounds like he has great motivation to live. That is half the battle!
  20. He's working on Calculus 1 right now, but will definitely take it over.
  21. We do have community colleges nearby, so that is an option. Because my husband is a professor, he has the possibility of getting free tuition at a few nearby four-year universities, so that factors into his decision. He is currently interested in mechanical or aeronautical engineering. Community college is certainly not ruled out at this point. Thanks for your advice!
