  1. He's a corporate pilot. He has a high school diploma and 28yrs experience. (He could have gone further and faster if he'd had a college degree, just in case your kids wonder.)
  2. Oh, thank you! Thank you! Those suggestions are exactly what I'm looking for. Yay!
  3. Or can you point me in the direction of a classics list sorted by reading level? Either way, thanks!
  4. I want to put more good writing into DS's silent reading diet. Left to his own devices, he'll choose books about snakes or crocodiles every time. Which is fine, but there are other sorts of books to be read too, and I'd like to bring some of those in. Any suggestions?
  5. Ditto Sam's - the big one for something like $16.
  6. Thanks, Jim and cabreban. Jim, you answered another question I had as well: when do they start Essentials. A friend had said sixth grade, but she's new to CC as well so she's learning with me. Learning to retain info - training the brain: that's the primary reason I'm considering CC. We haven't done nearly enough in that regard.
  7. What cycle will CC be on for the fall of 2012? I'm going to an information meeting tonight and trying to read up so that I am not totally lost. Also, has anyone started CC when their child was in upper elementary? My son will be in 5th grade in the fall.
  8. It was hidden, but I found it after you pointed out that it was a video. Thanks again!
  9. Clearly your father, at least, has no idea what public school is like. Exactly how much time is spent hand-holding in the regular classroom? :001_rolleyes: Okay, pass the bean dip please.
  10. I am a firm believer in the notion that YOUR child will find his/her way to you, no matter the obstacles. Best wishes!
  11. Since my DH isn't convinced homeschooling is the right thing (because it isn't the "norm"), he probably throws me under the bus.
  12. Can your children please come teach that to my child?!?!
  13. I buy two boxes of the Equate/WM brand whenever I think about it - just to stockpile. I have no doubt that it will require a Rx soon, and I am hoping not to pay a doctor every time the wind blows in NM (which is all.the.flipping.time). The stockpile won't last forever, but it makes me feel better to have it handy when the duststorms hit.
  14. We put on one from Invisible Shield. It was expensive and a pain to put on, but the screen is perfect even a year later. I've heard others say they don't use a screen protector at all and their screen is like new still, but I just couldn't take that chance. DS is very hard on things like that. I've been very pleased.
  15. Thanks, everyone! Lots of ideas to get us started. I know for sure he will love rebrickable. Maybe with that experience, he will branch out more on his own. Thanks again!
  16. DS wants to build but doesn't really have much imagination for creating. He has the instructions for the sets he's gotten, of course, but he'd love some instructions to build something from various parts and pieces (not necessarily a complete set). I looked at peeron.com but theirs are instructions for the sets. He only has a few sets but did get a bucketful of pieces for Cmas. Thanks for any help!
  17. It is our family policy to never surprise anyone with venison. DH's family would not be comfortable with that, even if they unknowingly ate and liked the dish.
  18. The Hague convention or treaty or whatever it's called, set forth by the UN, wants to discontinue international adoptions. Their premise is that it is better for children to languish in orphanages within their country of origin than to flourish in families of different cultures and/or ethnicities.
