  1. Mine would say to protect you from the elements, but the improve your appearance to prevent people from being naked sounds like him too.
  2. DS7 just took his new bear to a party that was mostly 17-19yo males. The worst comment he got was "Cute bear," and most of them were strangers to him. No one seemed to feel it was weird or strange.
  3. My kids are on Upwards basketball teams. Their end of the season rewards cycle through basketballs, duffle bags, backpack, lunch bags, and the over the door hoop with ball. Favorites are the balls and the backpack.
  4. Wow, so this means the doc way back wasn't a quack!!! I hurt my ankle my senior year in high school. Doc said it was a bone bruise, rest and stay off it, it would heal. A year later, it was still hurting whenever I did too much. I thought he had misdiagnosed me and I had really broken or at least chipped the bone. But if it takes that long to heal, it very well may have been a bone bruise. Now, umpteen years later, I can barely remember which ankle it was, so it must have healed in there somewhere.
  5. For my daughter's 5yo tea party, we went to the thrift store and got some fancy hats, scarves, and tea cups. The cups were 25 and 50 cents, so if the 5yo's broke them, it was no big loss.
  6. My library system is wonderful compared to some described here. At two branches, they know me and my kids by name. All of them are willing to talk to us, help us, etc. Yes, more movies and computers have been added, but most people I see are checking out more books than movies. I would love a netflix type service for ebooks!!
  7. I'm not sure of the answer to your question. There is a lot of Algebra used in the program, and it is structured so that a student can learn on his own when the teacher (me) has no clue about Chemistry. The few questions he has had, I have been able to use the teacher's manual to answer. There are chapters on those subjects and they have calculations in the chapter, but if they are what you asked, I'm not sure. The lab kit comes with everything needed, except distilled water, a pan, and a stove. Ds16 hasn't reached that part yet, but flipping forward, he thinks so. HTH
  8. http://beginningspublishing.com/version2/spectrum.htm Spectrum Chemistry is high school level.
  9. 2-3 boneless chicken breast and BBQ sauce to make BBQ sandwiches. Or if you have issues with BBQ (some older people do) or cold weather, cut up the chicken with potatoes and carrots and make a soup/stew.
  10. This looks awesome!! Unfortunately, out of the budget this year!! Maybe next year....I can bill it as a senior trip since he'll be a senior!! Thank you!
  11. Thank you. THose DK books look like a great place to start. And the history of metal!! I never even thought of that. My dd and I went to the Met in NYC and took lots of pics of the armor and weapons for ds a few years back. We can pull those out and identify them!! Daytona Museum has a lot of weaponry too.
  12. My ds16 wants to study weaponry through the ages for History this year. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you
  13. Are you looking for Gulf or Atlantic beach? Clearwater is probably the best place for Gulf beach. Close to the zoo, about 2 hrs from Legoland. Cocoa Beach is probably the closest for the Atlantic. But that puts you 3 hrs from the zoo, but still about 2 hrs from Legoland. The Space Center is about 45 min from Cocoa Beach.
  14. Please pray for my MIL, she is on the way to the hospital with a stroke at almost 80 years old. Thank you.
  15. I've had a couple of my kids go through this at that age. First, I pointed out anyone we knew in their life that had different colored skin, then different hair, telling them choosing people by hair or skin color was the same thing. Then we played some role playing games where different people were excluded or included based on shirt color, hair color, whatever random thing I thought of. It showed them that skin color mattered about as much as your shirt color. This is the age that they are realizing that there are differences in people out there, and they are trying to sort out in their mind which differences matter. Show by actions that personality is more important than external looks and your kids will follow suit.
  16. If you can watch the shows on free Hulu, then you can watch it on Hulu plus, not necessarily on your tv. For the shows offered on Plus, only some are available to stream to tv. There are also 3-4 ads per episode of a show, even on plus. Also, when we had it, we had issues with it stopping and searching for connection in the middle of a show or even getting staticcy. We don't have this issue streaming Netflix.
  17. Pasta salad? Cook rotini pasta til just done. Run cold water over it and let drip dry in the colander. Dice tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, pepperoni, and ham. Shred some cheese. Mix it all with the pasta and refrigerate. Add in salad dressing just before serving.
  18. A friend set up a forum at runboard. Hasn't seen much traffic yet, so I'm not sure how well it works.
  19. My dd (the ever organized) set up a rotating system where she keeps track of who's turn it is to pick, since we were developing a habit of arguing over which game to play. This ensures a rotating list of games since ages 6-47 mean different interests. If the kids are playing alone, they might play the same game over and over, especially DD and DS11.
  20. Daughter says get a smooth rock, glue googly eyes on it and include "feeding instructions" for a pet rock!! Especially if most of the recipients were teens in the 80s.
  21. Same here, older kids, but I take mine at night when everyone is in bed.
  22. Gamestop can show a game sold out online, but if you call the stores near you, they might have it on the shelves. Online doesn't track what is available in stores for used since stores buy games used and then sell them without the games going to a central location.
  23. As far as I know, the only online place for games is gamefly.com. It works like Netflix, you pay a monthly fee and get discs in the mail. I've never tried it, but haven't heard anything bad about it. Blockbuster still has games for rent if there is one near you.
