  1. I am looking for historical fiction set in the Victorian to WWII eras. It will be for my 7th and 8th grade kids. They are reading Lord of the Rings and Little Women, so large works are fine. Any ideas, recommendations? Thank you
  2. Spaghetti, hamburgers, and pizza are at least one night a week!! Since we got a bread maker, pizza is homemade on Fri, unless something comes up. The other 4 nights rotate between chicken, pork chops, Uh oh, mom's looking in the cookbook meals, and potluck (which means eat leftovers or something frozen (No, not ice cream!!)) Hamburger night is usually when I am busy, both DH and DS17 can cook them easily!!
  3. In addition to what the others have posted, I'd keep track of his drinking through the day. He could be more dehydrated than he normally is and that can make you tired. Especially when nothing else is going on and you then notice it. I've had that happen. Too much caffeine the evening before and I wake up feeling tired and foggy. Just an idea.
  4. The only time we called the police was for an under 2yo wandering unsupervised. We live on the corner of a busy street and the main feeder road into the neighborhood. She came walking down the sidewalk and nearly into the intersection after dark. We had never seen her before, no idea where she belonged nor could she tell us. So we called the police. She ended up coming from about a block down the busy road. Dad left to walk to the store and mom was washing dishes. Each thought she was with the other and she slipped out to follow dad who thought she was staying home with mom. Haven't seen them since, so I assume communications improved.
  5. This is an excellent camera and although Amazon has it for over $300, I was able to get it for just over $100 at Target and my SIL got it for about $175 at Walmart. Also, Amazon has some older models with less Mp for around $100. Good luck.
  6. Here are a bunch of camping dessert recipes. Maybe you can find one there he will love. We went camping on my daughter's 11th birthday and just made brownies at home and brought them in a container. Brownies pack well for camping. You can also make cupcakes and bring the frosting separately, then frost on the day, or even have frost your own cupcakes.
  7. Stage version of Oklahoma with HUGH JACKMAN playing Curly!! Available on Netflix DVD and at Amazon
  8. I got this while on vacation from the recommendation of my SIL and nephew. I love it!!! I was able to stay on the ground while the kids climbed a 50+ foot tower and get pics that looked like I was standing 5ft away. I've gotten pics of them running that are clear and crisp. And best of all, I found it for $100 at Target!!!
  9. We take off July, except for daily reading, unless there is something that needs finishing. We also usually take Dec. off and a week here and there for camping or visitors. We took most of April off this year for vacation to see DH's family and for my sister visiting, so might need to press into July, but that is unusual. Dd would be fine taking time off and pursuing her own interests, but she likes doing school and has actually started on some stuff for next year. The boys will play video games all day if allowed, so doing school limits that and keeps them in a routine.
  10. I chose NROC for ds17 because he wanted physics and this provides tests and homework with answers. He is finishing Spectrum Chemistry this year and has done it mostly on his own, I assisted with labs and graded from the teacher's manual. I am not strong in science either, so I needed something that provides me with the answers. He has no problem with reading texts. I plan to print everything except the videos and do it as mainly an offline class. I was going to put my daughter into a middle school biology with ds12, but she requested a high school level (she's going into 8th) so she can do more in high school. She is a self starter and very independent. I was able to find the book for $10 on Amazon, so told her we can attempt it, and go back into the middle school level if it proves too much. After starting to print some of the chapters, the unit reviews were on the AP biology, not the physics, so I was wrong about that.
  11. I've taken to telling my kids to ask me again after..... For instance, the watering...I would say, ask me after I have finished watering. If they forget to ask, apparently it wasn't important to them. It also cuts down on the can I do X after school is finished. If I say yes, and they don't finish school til dinnertime due to stalling tactics, then I have a meltdown on my hands. If I make them wait to ask til then, it avoids the meltdown, sometimes.
  12. We just took ours apart and replaced it. Our neighbor took all the metal pieces to sell for scrap and DH used a razor knife to cut the lining into managaeable pieces and set it out for garbage. A junker came and got it before the garbageman though.
  13. I am planning to use NROC physics next year for Ds 17. Going through the material today, there were several places that had a unit review but no unit test. Are these located somewhere else or is that something that I make up myself from the chapter tests? Also dd13 wants to do the Biology. Is there much difference between the AP Biology and the Non-Majors Biology? Are they both High school level? At a quick glance, I do not see any tests in the Non-Majors Biology. This is my first time attempting to use the NROC and I am not entirely sure I understand how it works.
  14. City of Ember series is another dystopian one. Mysterious Benedict Society series is a fun adventure. Anne of Green Gables and Louisa May Alcott has many other books if she liked Little Women. Rangers Apprentice and Percy Jackson series for fantasy adventure.
  15. We like granola bars, beef jerky/sticks, mints, and gum for snacking when traveling. Can also be used for breakfasts. Take tortilla wraps, a lunch meat or even taco filling, along with lettuce, cheese, etc for lunches. Grapes are an easy fruit for snacking in the car.
  16. Mine work on the same schedule from Homeschool Tracker. My rule is it doesn't matter which day it is scheduled on, as long as it is done by Friday. They must work at least 10-2 every day. What actually happens is ds17 works almost all day M-W, then half days on Th-F. and gets it all done. DD13 works hard M-W, then instead of taking a half day Th-F, she works ahead where she can. Ds12 works steadily, usually just following the list by day and Ds7 just does whatever mom says is next. If your son really wants to make this work, it sounds like he needs a time frame of school work daily, even if he can pick from the list of what he does next. A few weekends of doing school in place of fun can make a huge difference in attitude too. PS My kids also have a no electronics unless directly related to school before 3pm on school days.
  17. Variation on the pp potatoes in foil, we do chicken, potatoes, carrots, onions, whatever veggies appeal. drizzle with oil and some spices, put on hot coals, turning occasionally. Make sure to double wrap the foil since if oil leaks out, it will bring fire into the packet and you end up giving your packet to the hungry teenage boy. Get 6in sub rolls, cut off one end, hollow it out, put in BBQ'd hamburger, and cheese, wrap in foil. Keep in cooler, then heat on coals or on stove. precook spaghetti sauce. cook noodles on camp stove (we use corkscrew for camping) warm sauce, and serve.
  18. It is the best preteen/teen girl magazine out there in my opinion. The advice section deals with friend issues, sibling/parent issues, and teacher issues; not girlfriend/boyfriend stuff. There are a lot of neat crafts and stories. My daughter has been getting it for 4 years now, since she was 9. I asked her last year if she wanted to renew or was getting too old and she definitely wanted to renew.
  19. Just beware of late night knocking on the door!! My mom was sitting up reading one windy night and heard a knock. Looked out and didn't see anything, so she opened the door and walked to the end of the porch to peer around the garage. Still nothing. Turned to go back in and saw an armadillo heading in the house!! She jumped in front of it and stomped her foot and it turned and ambled on out. She texted me and I was LOL.
  20. I assign areas. I have 4 kids, so split the common areas into 4. Living room, dining room, kitchen, and bathroom. Started off with having them be responsible for pickup and either sweeping or vacuuming their area. As they got more proficient, I added more to it. Either DH or I help ds7 out(probably too much).
  21. Hmmm, let's see... Science: 12th grade Physics and 8/9th Biology pulled from here 7th grade Biology, probably RSO Biology 2 from Pandia Press. 2nd grade still deciding. I have RSO Chemistry or I can order RSO Earth Science. ES is more along his reading level, but none of my kids have been too into it. History: 12th-History of Weapons (self put together from ideas on HS board), 8th grade: Where Brook and River Meet (Also includes English), 7th grade: Learning Literature through Lord of the Rings + whatever we add in. 2nd grade: SOTW Book 2 Math: Math U See: Algebra 2, Algebra 1, Zeta and Beta English: Michael Clay Thompson Grammar for older 3, Growing with Grammar for 2nd. Winning with Writing for 2nd, Natural Speller for 7th and 2nd, Assigned reading for all, list not decided yet. French, home ec, computer skills, various other electives.
  22. I read it as Well Trained Foodie Chefs. :) Broccoli, those crispy Chinese food things (kinda like a fried pasta), chopped green onions, pretty much any salad topping can be a potato topping. I've seen people use salsa before.
  23. I still don't do as much in the kitchen as I need to, but I cook a lot more than I used to. My catalyst was the kids getting interested in cooking. That meant I needed to learn skills in order to teach them, seek out and find proper tools rather than using whatever is available so as to prevent injuries to the kids. But mostly, having someone else there to talk to, discuss what went wrong and what we can change next time makes it funner for me. Also the kids are older and less likely to complain because it is "different".
